After studying political science and multicultural diversity as an undergraduate in Japan, Takahisa Waki spent 13 years with Mitsubishi Corporation, where he worked on infrastructure projects across EMEA and Central Asia.

Today, he’s a manager for a global financial-services company and an Executive MBA student in Booth’s Hong Kong program, where he’s a 75th Anniversary Scholar.

Why did you decide to pursue an Executive MBA?

After experiencing project head and manager roles in global projects and passing the CPA exam, I recognized the need to learn systematic management as a science to elevate my career and enhance my decision-making and leadership skills. I gathered information about MBA and EMBA experiences. Since I preferred to deepen my insights through discussion with experienced mid-senior professionals in various backgrounds rather than people very early in their careers, I judged the EMBA program would be suitable.

What factors played into your decision to attend Booth?

I decided to join Booth for several reasons. Considering my career experience and goals, I wanted to attend a school that is strong in finance and strategic and analytical thinking. I was also looking for a school with a robust network of alumni working in management-level financial roles in global companies.

In addition, Booth was the sole top US business school with campuses in the US, Europe, and Asia. I was looking for a diverse program, and I saw that the school had a deep commitment to fostering diversity. Furthermore, before applying, I sat in on an EMBA class in Hong Kong and had lunch with current students. I sensed the enthusiasm of the top-tier class and felt inspired.

Tell us about the connections you’ve made with classmates. How has that affected your experience so far?

We recently finished International Weeks in Chicago, London, and Hong Kong, where I made deep connections with the members of my cohort and my study group. Booth’s EMBA students come from diverse industries, nationalities, and professional experiences, and I have been highly motivated and inspired by their passion and attitude. Also, they are respectful with a cooperative mindset and very happy to be part of a great and exciting community. I have already learned many things and views from classmates.

In what ways does Booth align with your expectations and needs for your specific career goals?

Booth is a finance school with many alumni in financial roles, so I’m confident that I’ll be able to create a strong network that will help my career. In addition, I’m learning new skills and knowledge not only on the finance side, but also in management, which will help me impact society and my own organization through a financial and business strategy role in a management position in the future.

What advice would you give someone considering applying to Booth’s Executive MBA Program?

Each individual has their own background, career goals, and purpose, so the process is different for everybody. I would recommend researching the school and analyzing yourself to judge whether Booth is the best fit for you. If you determine that Booth is the best fit, I believe that this program with world-class faculty and global executives will support your career and individual life journey and also will broaden your horizons and insights in a positive way.

How did it feel to receive the 75th Anniversary Scholarship? What does it mean to you?

It is an honor, and I am grateful. Since I didn’t expect it, I was truly surprised. At the same time, I felt that I need to be humble. I would like to contribute to Booth as much as possible throughout my career and life, such as bringing future talented candidates or sharing the value of the program with the market.
