Celebrating AAPI Month with Booth Student Groups

FTFY20 Orientation Capture First Day -- close up of four students smiling and conversing in Harper Center Winter Gardens

In celebration of AAPI Month, co-chairs shine light on how their student group involvement contributes to their sense of community at Chicago Booth.

Forming bonds and creating new experiences is a vital part of the MBA experience. At Booth, you have the opportunity to engage with fellow students outside of the classroom through student group involvement. With many options available, there’s a group for everyone to call home.

In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we connected with members of the Booth community with affiliation to AAPI Month. We encourage you to read about our Boothies and see how student group involvement can lead to finding your community during your MBA experience.

Asian American Student Association

The Asian American Student Association (AASA) is a student group formed to create a tight-knit community at Booth for all students interested in reflecting on their personal identities while bonding with other individuals who share an affinity for cultural experiences.

“Being part of the Asian American Student Association has been like finding a second family. It's given me a chance to make great friends and connect with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Events like the dumpling night, tea ceremony, and family dinners have not only deepened my appreciation for my own culture but also helped me build a strong sense of community.” – Karina Tjin, former co-chair of Asian American Student Association

"The Asian American Student Association has been a cornerstone of my Booth experience. In a leadership role, I've had a front-row seat to watching members find their people, build lasting friendships, and bring a richness of perspective that makes Booth a more vibrant place for everyone. That sense of belonging doesn't stay within AASA - it carries into classrooms, recruiting seasons, and other moments of business school that are harder to navigate alone."  – Annie Batsaikhan, co-chair of Asian American Student Association

Southeast Asia Club

The Southeast Asia Club aims to promote career-related activities for Boothies interested in Asia, while also increasing awareness of business issues in Asia and facilitating opportunities within the community to have fun.

“My experience within the Southeast Asia Club (formerly known as the Chicago Asia Pacific Group) has been a tremendous help in fostering a home away from home in Chicago. Even prior to coming to Booth, they've always been very helpful in helping me navigate the transition to my new chapter in Chicago, both professionally and personally. During the school year, we held events that tightened our bond together and developed a strong sense of camaraderie over dumplings, spring rolls, game nights, and just random night talks. Right before the end of my first year at Booth, we hosted a send-off for our Class of 2026 friends (see photo). Now we're ready to welcome our Southeast Asian friends from the Class of 2028!” – Gabriela Gondokusumo, co-chair of Southeast Asia Club

Japan Club

The Japan Club fosters the exchange of Japanese culture within Chicago Booth through social and cultural events. The Japan Club also provides resources for students interested in pursuing careers in Japan, promotes the Chicago Booth brand in Japan, and engages with alumni and corporate recruiters from Japan.

“The Japan Club has been an essential part of my MBA journey. Even during my application process, the club helped me connect with Japanese students who provided valuable information, ultimately influencing my decision to attend Booth. At Booth, the Japan Club helped me find my community and make friends, not only with Japanese students but also with those interested in Asian culture. This being my first time studying in the U.S., I was very nervous initially, but the community made me feel at home in a foreign land. The support and camaraderie from the Japan Club has been invaluable to me. – Jiaqi Chen, former co-chair of Japan Club

"The Japan Club is a group open for all students to experience, taste, and visit Japan. More than 70% of our club members are non-Japanese who love to explore and experience Japanese culture. We host a variety of cultural events each academic quarter as well as the annual Japan Trek! Whether you are a first-timer or well-acquainted with the culture, sharing my background and hosting these activities brings me special joy, helping create a welcoming sense of community at Booth." – Naoki Imura, co-chair of Japan Club

South Asia Business Group

The South Asia Business Group aims to create a unified platform for members of the Chicago Booth community and beyond to engage in initiatives connected to South Asia.

"Being part of the South Asia Business Group has helped me build a close-knit community at Booth where I can celebrate my culture and feel a sense of home right here in Chicago. From fun events like the Diwali Cruise to celebrating Holi in the quad, I’ve made some incredible memories and lasting friendships. It’s also been a bridge to connect with people across other groups and clubs and bring in other Boothies to learn more about the South Asian experience." – Divya Agrawal, former co-chair of South Asian Business Group

"My culture has always been deeply meaningful to me, so being part of Booth’s South Asia Business Group has been especially rewarding. Through SABG, I’ve been able to strengthen my connection with other South Asian students while celebrating holidays like Diwali and Holi. At the same time, one of the most rewarding parts of the experience has been sharing those celebrations with classmates from different backgrounds and introducing friends to aspects of South Asian culture they may not have experienced before. In many ways, SABG has helped create not just a community for South Asian students at Booth, but a bridge that brings the broader Booth community together as well." – Saniya Kumar, co-chair of South Asian Business Group

Korea Business Club event where Boothies connected making food

Korea Business Club

The Korea Business Club cultivates a welcoming atmosphere where Chicago Booth students, with interest in Korean business and culture, can gain valuable cultural and personal experiences, all while building an enriched network and deepening their understanding of the business landscape and economy in Korea.

“As a member of the Korea Business Club, I've had the wonderful opportunity to connect with the larger Booth and Chicago community in a way that allows me to step out of my comfort zone culturally and professionally. Recently, as a club, we had the chance to host a gimbap (Korean seaweed & rice hand roll) making class, which was something I had never done before. I was able to meet a lot of new people as we connected through having shared interest in Korean food and culture; furthermore, I really felt like part of a big community that had the shared goal of teaching others at Booth about Korea – it was a great feeling. It was also a really delicious event where we got to take home the leftover gimbap, so I'm looking forward to all the future events with KBC!” – Elliot Choi, former co-chair of Korean Business Club

Booth Greater China

Booth Greater China (BGC) is a forum created by students of Chinese heritage to provide opportunities for the Booth community to connect and bond through a series of professional and cultural events. The group aims to unite students who are interested in learning about and advancing their understanding of the culture and environment in the Greater China region.

“Being part of Booth Greater China has given me a meaningful way to build friendships, collaborate across programs, and create a stronger sense of belonging at Booth. As one of the organizers, I was especially proud that this year marked the first time our Booth Greater China Group (for evening and weekend MBA students) led the University of Chicago China Forum in partnership with the Greater China Club (for full-time MBA students) and UChicago CSSA, bringing together more than 120 students across Booth and UChicago programs, along with Booth faculty and industry speakers from the U.S. and China. For me, the Forum was not only a professional event, but also an important way to help students understand global growth through different views and perspectives. We even brought robotics from China to campus for students to experience firsthand. Through this experience, I made many new friends, deepened connections across Booth, and became an even stronger believer in the power of collaboration across Booth's Part-Time MBA Program, Full-Time MBA Program, and the broader UChicago community. It has been incredibly rewarding to see how our collective efforts can bring people together, bridge across programs, and create a broader exchange of ideas within the Booth community.” – Jojo Cui, co-chair of Booth Greater China Group

Booth South Asian Club

The Booth South Asian Club provides a platform for students to come together and foster a sense of community, facilitate networking with fellow students and alumni, and learn more about corporate opportunities available in South Asia.

"Being co-chair of the Booth South Asian Club has given me a way to bring our community together while sharing what I love most about my culture with the rest of Booth. Whether it's celebrating Diwali, Eid and Holi or gathering over a home-style meal, our events are where friendships are formed and traditions come alive. Watching classmates from outside the community show up, ask questions, and join in has been one of the many rewarding parts of my MBA experience." – Aditya Andhare, co-chair of Booth South Asian Club
