Professors Michael Greenstone and Dipesh Chakrabarty came together for an engaging, virtual discussion called Economy and Ecology on October 7 from noon to 1 p.m. CT.

This virtual event took place as part of the series A Meeting of the Minds: Business and the Human, sponsored by Booth and the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge. The series brings together faculty members from Booth, the humanities, and related fields, such as politics, law, and psychology.

Dipesh Chakrabarty

Dipesh Chakrabarty is the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations, and the College at the University of Chicago. He has a courtesy appointment in the School of Law. His books include Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference, published by the Princeton University Press. He is the recipient of the 2014 Toynbee Prize, which is given to a distinguished practitioner of global history, and the 2019 West Bengal Government's Tagore Memorial Prize for his book, The Crises of Civilization: Explorations in Global and Planetary Histories (2018). His most recent book, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age, will be published next year by the University of Chicago Press. He currently serves as the faculty director for the University’s Center in Delhi.

Michael Greenstone

Michael Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics, the College, and the Harris School, as well as the director of the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics, and the director for the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago. He previously served as the chief economist for President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, where he co-led the development of the US government’s social cost of carbon. Greenstone’s research, which has influenced policy globally, is focused on uncovering the benefits and costs of environmental quality and society’s energy choices. His current work involves testing innovative ways to increase energy access and improve the efficiency of environmental regulations globally. He is codirector of the Climate Impact Lab, creator of the Air Quality Life Index™, and cofounder of Carbon Vault.
