What are the anticipated policies for the in-person class format for the fall semester?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
While we are not yet sure of the format that Autumn quarter will take (online, in-person, combination of the two), we are hopeful that we can resume in person studies in some capacity. However, we understand this might not be possible for all of our students (international students, commuters, etc.) so flexible options are being explored at this time and contingency planning is underway for Autumn. As you know this is a rapidly evolving and fluid situation and the health, safety, and well-being of our students, community, faculty, and staff remain our top priority. We hope to have clarity around the format of Autumn quarter by the end of June and will communicate updates at that time. In the meantime, you can get the latest institutional updates and information regarding the Booth community on this page: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/why-booth/stories/coronavirus-updates-for-booth-community
Chat Participant:
Is your department still accepting applicants for this coming Fall? Are classes online only or in person?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
Yes, we continue to accept applications on a rolling admissions basis. The deadline for Autumn 2020 was extended from June 8 to July 1 so you still have time to apply. While we are not yet sure of the format that Autumn quarter will take (online, in-person, combination of the two), we are hopeful that we can resume in person studies in some capacity.
Chat Participant:
How has your admissions process changed with the existence of COVID? Have applicant expectations evolved at all?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
We are still seeing the same very high quality applicants to our programs as before! The process has pivoted to accommodate for needing to be virtual- meaning, interviews are happening via Zoom vs. in-person and we are trying to have as many virtual events as possible to engage with Booth vs. events that would have been in-person previously.
Chat Participant:
Given that visiting campus and understanding how it fits one's needs is a crucial component of application, in the current circumstances, how would admissions view applicants that can't visit the campus before applying? Does admissions advise anything in this regard?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
We are assessing virtual class visits at this time for prospective students. We hope to provide candidates looking to get a glimpse into the Chicago Booth classroom with an opportunity to do so, but are working on it. You can still experience Booth’s unique community and pay-if-forward culture firsthand. We encourage you to connect virtually with current students or meet with Admissions representatives. Chat Participant:
Hi, I aspire to be a Chicago booth fellow. Due to the current ongoing scenario will there be any adjustments to the 3 year requirement to be CBF?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
There aren't plans at the moment to adjust the CBF guidance of three years or work experience or less. Thanks!
Chat Participant:
Hi! Are you offering virtual class-visit for prospective students now?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We currently do not have class visit options available. We are planning to provide virtual visits this summer.
Chat Participant:
Is the GRE/GMAT mandatory for MBA - weekend classes? Are there plans to do remote online classes who cannot travel due to COVID?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Yes the GRE/GMAT is required to apply to the Evening/Weekend program. We hope to know more about plans for the Autumn quarter in the next few weeks. Classes and events for the Spring and Summer quarter this year are completely online.
Chat Participant:
Will an interview be required for admission? If so, will this need to be done in-person?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Yes, the interview is required for all candidates. These interviews will be virtual through at least the end of the summer.
Admissions Questions
Chat Participant:
What is the application due date for the spring semester?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
The Spring 2021 application for the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA Programs was just published late last month. The deadline to apply is January 8, 2021.
Chat Participant:
When does the application for part time Autumn 2021 quarter open up?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
We anticipate applications opening around March/April of 2021. Typically applications open about 6 months before the quarter begins.
Chat Participant:
For prospective students applying for Fall of 2021, do you have any advice on how best to network and prepare for the admissions process?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student
I would say take advantage of everything - talk to current and former students, attend virtual/in person workshops/panels (such as this), read up about the program. The most important thing for me in preparing for the admissions process was making sure that I fully understood what the program had to offer and talking to as many people as I possibly could. I made an effort to take a couple former and current students out to lunch and really to learn as much as possible.
Chat Participant:
Thank you all for answering those questions!! As for the recommendation letters, do those need to submit before the deadline on July 1st this year?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Yes, letters of recommendation will need to be submitted before the July 1st deadline of this year.
Chat Participant:
What is the overall acceptance rate for the Weekend/Evening MBA program?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
The acceptance rate is something we do not provide. We are however able to meet with you individually to understand your background and motivation for an MBA, and provide specific feedback to a potential application.
Chat Participant:
What are the key values Booth is looking for the resume and personal essays?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Great question! In general, the application review is extensive and holistic- focusing on all areas of the application, from your career progress, interpersonal skills, and academic abilities to involvement. We seek out candidates who are well-rounded and who will contribute to the Booth
community. More specifically, for your personal essay we look for authenticity and ways you can contribute to the Chicago Booth community derived from your personal and/or professional experience.
Chat Participant:
Is it okay to apply with official transcripts if unofficial transcripts are unavailable?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes, you may use official or unofficial transcripts when applying.
Chat Participant:
How many letter of recommendations are required?
Kayla Anderson | Office Manager, E&W MBA Programs Office
You will need to submit two letters of recommendation - one from letter should come from a supervisor and the other can be professional in nature or from an organization, club, or volunteer associate. You can learn more about what expect from one of our blogs: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/mba-life/lor-tips.
Chat Participant:
I am interested in the Weekend MBA program. Are there opportunities to connect with Booth Alumni in your respective city while pursuing your degree?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Absolutely! Most major cities in the US have a Booth alumni club. Students have access to our community directory which provides the location and contact number for all Booth students and alumni.
Chat Participant:
What are a few recommendations or tips for re-applicants?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Keep in mind that the differences in the second application include a reapplicant essay, and the requirement for just one new letter of recommendation. In the essay, make sure to touch on what has changed since the last time you applied in your own words. It is crucial to remain consistent and authentic in the story you are telling use with your application.
Chat Participant:
I just wanted to know what are the general requirements for getting into the full time MBA program. How difficult is it to get into the full time program as compared to the Weekend program? (with respect to GRE/GMAT scores, GPA, work experience etc.)
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
We look for very similar characteristics when evaluating applications to the full-time and part-time MBA programs. It is best if you take the approach of applying to the program that best fits your personal and professional goals. If you want to remain working while pursuing your MBA, the Weekend MBA Program is the best fit. If you are looking for a career change and to fully immerse yourself in an MBA, for example, then full-time is best. When it comes to competitiveness, the Full-Time MBA Program is inherently more competitive, as we receive applications from all over the world. For the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA Programs, applicants must already be in the US on a valid work visa or be a US citizen of permanent resident. Again, we suggest you apply to the program that best fits your goals. All Booth MBA programs yield the exact same degree. You can read more about what we look for in applicants here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/part-time/admissions/requirements
Chat Participant:
How long does it typically take to prepare a high-quality application to Booth?
Kayla Anderson | Office Manager, E&W MBA Programs Office:
The time varies by applicant based on their own schedule and perhaps how long they have been considering obtaining an MBA. It depends also on how quickly they can obtain letters of recommendation and how prepared they might feel taking the GRE,GMAT, or EA. Please note we operate on a rolling admissions basis. Therefore, we begin reviewing your application as soon as it is complete. We do not wait until the deadline to begin reviewing files.
Chat Participant:
If I am currently in an MBA program at another school, what is the process for transferring into Booth's part time MBA program? Will courses from other business schools be credited?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
You are most welcome to apply to Booth through our regular application process. We do not accept transfer credits from other institutions. Thank you!
Chat Participant:
Is there is cap on years of experience for weekend program?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We do not have a cap on years of work experience. Based on last year's application data, the mid-80% range of years of work experience for incoming students was 2-10 years.
Chat Participant:
If life happens and I need to move before completing my part time MBA, are courses / credits transferrable to other MBA programs? How would that process work?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
That would depend on the other institution's policies and you would need to check with them!
Chat Participant:
At what stage in our application process should we begin consulting with an admissions contact?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
Anytime! If you are unsure who your contact is (you would’ve received an email from them shortly after expressing interest in the program), email us at EveningWeekend-Admissions@chicagobooth.edu and we will get you connected with your contact. We look forward to getting to know you!
Chat Participant:
Hello, I am planning to catch the July 1st due date. I am currently between jobs, and therefore found it a little difficult to get a RL from my current supervisor. Is it ok to provide a RL written by a co-worker instead? Thank you
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
This is no problem and makes sense given your situation. In the application, you will be asked to explain why you selected your recommenders. Please note why a current supervisor in not an option at this time.
Chat Participant:
Hi! I would like to know how a resume for admission should look like -specifically for someone who has over 10+ years of experience. What are the key points that you look for in the resume
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
The review is extensive and holistic- focusing on all areas of the application, from your career progress, interpersonal skills, and academic abilities to involvement. We seek out candidates who are well-rounded and who will contribute to the Booth community. Furthermore, there is no cap on the years of work experience we would consider for the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA Program. Given your profile, I encourage you to learn more about the Executive MBA Program as well. The Evening MBA and Weekend MBA Programs offer more flexibility while the Executive MBA Program is a 21 month lock-step cohorted program that meets in a combination of alternating weekends and week-long residencies in the Chicago, London, and Hong Kong campuses. On average students in the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA tend to have 7 years of work experience, while students in the Executive MBA tend to have on average 14 years of work experience. Again, these are by no means cutoffs, but it comes down to the format that will help you achieve you
Chat Participant:
How is the application and interview process different for those who are interested in the CBF Program? Are you automatically considered a CBF Program applicant if you have <3 years professional experience or do you have to opt-in?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
You must identify that you are interested in the CBF program- you will not automatically be considered for it. The application process is the same (though I'd recommend you touch on why CBF is of interest to you in your essays). The interview process is slightly different- you will be invited to an interview day, where you'll have an interview with a current student and then a panel interview with a small group. You can find more information here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/early-career-programs/chicago-business-fellows/application-process
Chat Participant:
My question is regarding to the business fellows program. Can I apply for this program after submitting the application for weekend MBA program?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
There is a designated area on the application that indicates whether you are interested in applying for Chicago Business Fellows. If you already submitted your application for the Weekend MBA Program, please contact admissions@chicagobooth.edu to state that you want to make changes to your application before the upcoming Weekend MBA deadline.
Chat Participant:
Hello! Could you give a little more detail on the types of activities the make the Business Fellows program different than the normal weekend MBA?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
The Chicago Business Fellows, designed for early career candidates with 3 years or less of professional work experience is really seen as a community within a community. The fellows are provided with social and professional opportunities that really help them build and develop soft skills. While there is nothing co-horted about Booth, the CBF program seems to give students that co-hort "feel" as they have many of the same experiences during their initial time at Booth. You can check out some of our CBF stories and learn more about the experience here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/why-booth/stories/topic/chicago-business-fellows?sc_lang=en#sort=%40articledate%20descending
Chat Participant:
Thanks I have one more question about CBF program. The requirement is one essay need to come from current supervisor. My company is going through some changes now. I am concerned my current supervisor does not know me very well. Can I chose my former supervisor and someone who has worked closely with me in last 6 months?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Yes, you can choose a former supervisor or someone who has worked closely with you in the last 6 months.
Chat Participant:
Hello, Thinking to apply Autumn semester for weekend program as the deadline got extended and at the same time wondering if I can improve my chances of getting admitted in the winter semester with more slots being available. Any suggestions? I am in Dallas and wanted to know if the program offers flexibility to attend classes on alternate weekends?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We do not have a set number of seats to fill in any of our quarters. Your application for the Autumn quarter will be viewed the same as it would be future a future quarter.
Chat Participant:
Hello. Hope you are doing well. I am looking into MBA scholarship that Booth College offers. Generally speaking, what percentages of students usually receive scholarship at the time of admission?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We offer a competitive and limited number of merit scholarships throughout the year. Since the candidate pool each quarter will have varying sizes and we do not have a set number of scholarships to distribute, we are unable to share recipient percentages.
Chat Participant:
After submitting the application, how soon will need to have an interview? And what will be the process time from interview to final decision
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Admissions interviews are by invitation only, and are conducted after submitting a completed application in the online application system. Interview decisions will be released within 10 days of submitting your completed application. If you are invited to interview, you will receive information about scheduling your interview at that time.
Chat Participant:
How do I go about getting personal feedback on a potential application?
Kayla Anderson | Office Manager, E&W MBA Programs Office:
We are certainly happy to give feedback regarding a prospect's resume through our Resume Review process. You can find the link here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/part-time/admissions/resume-review?sc_lang=en. However - we do not typically give feedback on the rest of the application. That being said - please feel free to schedule an appointment with one of our Admissions Directors at any time during your application process. They are happy to assist you. Please reach out to our Admissions hotline: EveningWeekend-Admissions@chicagobooth.edu
Chat Participant:
Is it common for students to come in with post graduate degrees/certifications?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
Many students do have other degrees/certifications (e.g., CFA, CPA, masters of some sort, etc.), but it's certainly not required or the norm by any means. I did not come in with post graduate degrees and many of my friends do not have one either.
Chat Participant:
How much weight is put on each part of the application? Work experience, extra-curricular, GPA,GMAT/GRE, which would have the greatest weight in the evening/weekend MBA program?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
The review is extensive and holistic- focusing on all areas of the application, from your career progress, interpersonal skills, and academic abilities to involvement. We seek out candidates who are well-rounded and who will contribute to the Booth community. Generally speaking, your most recent GPA will carry more weight than your undergraduate GPA. However, we truly review your full application holistically.
Chat Participant:
Could you please share more insights about the admission process for Civic Scholar Program? Is there only one admission cycle per year?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
The Civic Scholars Program has one admission cycle per year. This is for starting in the Autumn quarter each year. The deadline will be in Spring (date for 2021 is tbd). After submitting the application, you will be informed after the deadline if you will be moving on to the next round to interview for the program. After the interview, you will an admissions decision in the following weeks.
Chat Participant:
Hello! I was wondering if undergraduate major influences how the GPA is evaluated. If the major was not business related, is it looked at the same way as something like finance?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
We look for diversity in thought and background in our applicants and welcome people from all majors! You will not be evaluated differently because you do not have a finance major. We want a variety of backgrounds in our classrooms and we will look to see how you performed in your major.
Chat Participant:
Hi all, wondering if part-time/ weekend students are eligible for Yellow Ribbon or full time only?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Part-Time students are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon benefits.
Chat Participant:
What types of scholarships are available for evening/weekend students? How do they compare to full-time MBA students?
Kayla Anderson | Office Manager, E&W MBA Programs Office:
Yes! All candidates are evaluated for scholarship- there's nothing additional that you need to do once submitting an application! We do not have percentages available, but they are highly competitive scholarships based on merit. Successful candidates tend to have above average test scores and undergraduate GPAs along with excellent work experience and stellar recommendations. You can learn more about our scholarships from our blog post here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/blog/ewadmissions/2019/funding-your-mba-scholarships-financial-aid The application process for the full-time program is generally more competitive that the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA programs. This includes the scholarship process as well.
Chat Participant:
Looking forward to submitting my application for the Fall later this week! I do have one question regarding the part of the Activities section where they ask for the frequency of each activity. If an activity occurs seasonally, would it be ok to put the regular hours/week when that activity occurs and then further specify in the section above it? The Frequency section only allows for numerical entries, so just want to confirm.
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes, adding the hours that activity takes place when in season would be fine.
Chat Participant:
How many applicants are admitted to the evening and weekend programs each session?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
We don't release that information to the public, but across our Evening and Weekend MBA programs, we usually have ~1200 students in the programs.
Chat Participant:
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions today! What is the typical work experience needed to be competitive with other applicants?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
The average work experience for incoming Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students is typically 5-6 years. However, the range is very wide from 1 to 20+ years. We highly value all levels of experience. If the timing is right for you personally and professionally, you should apply!
Chat Participant:
Does the scholarship depend on early application?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
It does not. We prefer to view the entire candidate pool before making scholarship decisions.
Chat Participant:
Is it possible to transfer from EW MBA to FT MBA?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
We strongly encourage you to apply to the program that is the right fit for you. We do not generally allow for transfers from the Evening MBA/Weekend MBA programs to Full-Time. Thanks!
Chat Participant:
How many people apply vs. how many people are accepted to the Civic Scholars Program? And when will the application timeline for a 2021 enrollment be released?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
We do not provide acceptance rates as they vary from quarter to quarter and at the end of the day want people to focus on putting together the strongest application possible. I would encourage you to familiarize yourself with our student profile to get a sense of what makes a competitive applicants. We anticipate the Civic Scholars application being live late summer for the Autumn 2021 application cycle. If you haven't done so already, be sure to check out the profile of our Civic Scholars here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/civic-scholars?sc_lang=en. The range of incoming Civic Scholars has varied from year to year but anywhere from 7-10 is what we anticipate. We also recently expanded it to include Evening and Full-Time.
Chat Participant:
What are the top three mistakes you see in applications, or the top three things you wish more people knew or would take into account as they submitted their applications? Thank you so much.
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
A great question and we are actually hosting an application strategies webinar next week with insider tips and tricks on this very topic! Top of mind, some of the bigger mistakes we see are not being school specific enough. For example, if your responses and essays are generic enough that they could be used for any top MBA program, then it lacks a sense of authenticity. We can tell when someone has not done their homework and really understands what Booth is all about and why it resonates with them specifically. I also recommend you answer the questions being asked of you and do not leave parts of your application incomplete. If interested, the link to the strategies webinar is here: https://apply.chicagobooth.edu/register/?id=d9d24aeb-f0b1-4d90-a6c4-fbb8db6adde0
Chat Participant:
As someone who is trying to "curate" a long list of activities and involvement, what advice do you have in order to make the application easier to read/process? In particular, cases where you have 2 or 3 organizations and many associated leadership/executive roles within those organizations. Is there a preference?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
I would encourage that it be on your resume and we also specifically ask about this in our application, so you will have an opportunity to provide that information to us. However, it's possible that your involvement in these organizations and leadership/executive roles might serve as a potential response to some of our essay questions. For 2020 we ask how you will contribute to the Chicago booth community and for 2021 our essays ask about leadership. You can definitely use some of that content and highlight these areas that you are proud of in various parts of your application.
Chat Participant:
If an applicant has a graduate degree, is there a difference in weight given to the graduate GPA compared to the undergraduate GPA? Can the mid 80% range for GPA apply to the graduate GPA or is it only for the undergraduate GPA?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
The mid-80% GPA is specific to undergrad, as most students do not have an advanced degree. Approximately 30% of Evening and Weekend MBA students already have an advanced degree, and their graduate GPAs tend to be strong (think 3.0+ on a 4.0 scale).
International Applicant Specific Questions:
Chat Participant:
If an applicant has a graduate degree, is there a difference in weight given to the graduate GPA compared to the undergraduate GPA?
Chat Participant:
Generally speaking, we have a holistic review process and weigh things evenly. However, on the individual level, this can vary. For example, if one has an advanced degree that may be considered more heavily than one’s undergraduate experience, as it is a more recent reflection of one’s academic ability. Approximately 30% of Evening and Weekend MBA students already have an advanced degree, so you will be in good company.
Chat Participant:
Hello! Another question. Is it possible to switch to full time MBA latter on if I started pursuing part time MBA or vice versa?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Unfortunately, it is not possible for an Evening/Weekend students to transfer to the Full-Time program and vice versa.
Chat Participant:
I graduated from an overseas university 9 years ago and I might not have my transcript from that currently. But I have my master degree and transcript from a US university in hand. I wonder if the undergraduate transcript is still a mandatory for applying part-time MBA?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We will need to have a scanned version of your undergraduate transcript in order for you to apply.
Chat Participant:
Does the program require transcript evaluation for international students from any accredited agency?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
At this time unofficial transcripts are fine for purposes of submitting and reviewing your application (as long as they are in English). If admitted, our office will reach out to you regarding international transcripts and what exactly we need from you.
Chat Participant:
Hello, I'd like to know if weekend MBA is also available for international candidates?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
We do not have who are traditionally thought of as international students in the Weekend MBA Program, as we are unable to issue F-1 student visas for the part-time programs. If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, you will need to already be in the US on a work visa to be eligible. For example, many of our Weekend students are on H1B visas. If you seek an F-1 student visa, you should pursue the Full-Time MBA Program.
Chat Participant:
I am a Canadian live and work in Ontario. Am I allowed to apply for the weekend program, or full time only?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
You are allowed to apply to the Weekend MBA program. International students in the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA program will need to maintain their H1B visa status in order to apply to and remain in the program. Student visas are not available in the part-time programs.
Chat Participant:
I am currently working in Ontario, Canada so I do not have H1B visa. But with Canadian passport I could travel across border. Can I still apply to the weekend program or no?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Yes, you are able to apply to the Weekend MBA program, however, to reiterate, we do not offer student visas so please be aware of any travel issues commuting 11 weeks per quarter to Chicago with customs.
Chat Participant:
Does the program accept students with H4 EAD visa status?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
We are in the process of looking into this as the H-4 was originally for the dependent of an H-1B and did not have authorization to work full-time. Email us your inquiry and we can look into this with our international office and provide you with a clearer answer.
Testing Questions
Chat Participant:
Could you please share the typical EA scores for evening and weekend program applicants who have 8+ years of experience
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
We just began accepting the EA within the last few months so do not yet have enough data to provide an average or typical scores. Also, to clarify we accept the EA for someone who graduated from undergrad 8 plus years ago as opposed to having 8 years of professional work experience. The EA evaluates candidates on higher-order reasoning in three sections: Integrated Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning and helps us assess the core skills needed for our Program. The EA can also help you identify areas for development as you prepare to become a student again.
Chat Participant:
What is the mid-range for the EA test? What's considered a good score for the EA test?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
153 is the average that Booth students in the Executive Program have scored. Since we just began accepting the exam in the Evening and Weekend program we do not have this data -- but anticipate our averages being similar.
Chat Participant:
Hi! Through my research I have found conflicting information on what qualifies as "equivalent" scores when converting GRE to GMAT. Do you have a specific range you look at overall for GRE scores, or a specific range within the Verbal and Quant sections? Thank you!
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Whenever we receive an application with a GRE score, we convert it to a GMAT score using the conversion tool here: https://www.ets.org/gre/institutions/about/mba/comparison_tool. For the past year of incoming students, the average score is 680 and the mid-80% range is 630-740.
Chat Participant:
I do know there is no waiver for GRE/GMAT score unless there is some undergrad requirements met. Are there any consideration of waiver if someone already have Masters degree from an accredited university?
Kayla Anderson | Office Manager, E&W MBA Programs Office:
The GRE, GMAT, or Executive Assessment is required for all applicants - no exception. Test scores are valid for 5 years, so if you have test scores from a previous Master's Degree, you could submit those as long as they have not expired. The exams offer an important evaluative data point in the holistic review of your application that help supplement the classes you’ve taken from an academic standpoint. Together, they help us understand your ability to be successful in the Booth classroom.
Chat Participant:
If I am interested to apply for the Fall 2020 program, could one possibly apply with an expired GRE score that's a little over 5 years old? Or is it mandatory to be retested?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Chicago Booth does accept expired test scores. Please retest and feel free to connect with a student to get answers about the Evening and Weekend MBA programs. https://apply.chicagobooth.edu/portal/studentvolunteer
Chat Participant:
Can you submit your application without a GMAT score if you are scheduled to take the exam after the application deadline?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
We will require self-reported, unofficial scores from you before you submit your application. We typically allow a 1 week grace period after the deadline for candidates who still need to take the exam. If you haven't done so already, please email us at eveningweekend-admissions@chicagobooth.edu to discuss your application/exam plans.
Chat Participant:
Will you need GMAT score for an individual with >13 years of experience for evening or online MBA?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
A test score is required of all applicants, regardless of background or years of experience. We accept the GMAT or GRE and for people who graduated 8 plus years ago we accept the Executive Assessment as well. We just posted a great blog post on choosing the right test for you: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/mba-life/gmat-gre-or-executive-assessment?sc_lang=en
Chat Participant:
What factors are taken into account to receive a merit scholarship? Is there GMAT score threshold that needs to be met?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
There are no GMAT thresholds that need to be met to be considered for merit scholarship- all you need to do is apply! We are looking for well-rounded candidates who are excelling in their jobs, giving back to their communities and who have shown strong academic performances.
Academic Questions
Chat Participant:
Can evening/weekend MBA students participate in joint degree programs too?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
Technically, yes, Evening and Weekend (EW) MBA students can pursue most joint degrees. However, it is often not a viable option for those who are working full-time. The EW programs are designed for full-time working professional and students are expected to remain working through the duration of the program. The vast majority of non-Booth courses take place at the University of Chicago’s main campus during the daytime, which is why joint degrees are very rare for EW students. Keep in mind that Booth students can take up to six courses in other University divisions. If you could from time to time fit a daytime class into your schedule, this would be worth looking into once you are a student at Booth.
Chat Participant:
My question is in regards to dual degrees. Recently, have you seen a Booth part time member successfully complete the MBA/MPCS degree? If so, how long does it usually take an average student to complete both part-time degrees?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
We do see students in our Evening & Weekend MBA programs completing the MBA/MPCS degree successfully. The degree usually takes an additional year or so- students often will take a 3rd class each quarter.
Chat Participant:
Is there a link to detailed curriculum schedule for the weekend program?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
You can find more information on classes offered during the weekends through our course search tool: https://intranet.chicagobooth.edu/pub/coursesearch/coursesearch. Morning classes meet from 9am-12pm and afternoon classes meet from 1:30-4:30pm.
Chat Participant:
Can Weekend MBA students take Evening MBA classes?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes, absolutely! Depending on your schedule, you have the flexibility to take coursework across programs. We often will see Weekend students taking an Evening course if they know that they'll be in Chicagoland that quarter and vice versa!
Chat Participant:
What support does the school provide for students interested in Search Funds? Thank you!
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Resources such as the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship, classes specific to search funds such as “building the new venture” and “new venture strategy”

When are the enrollment periods for Booth courses? If I am to be accepted as a graduate student at large, should I target applying earlier so I can select a course I'd like before it gets filled up, or will GSAL's always be considered after all Booth full and part time students finish enrollment?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
As I understand it, the Graduate Student at Large students will bid last, but I would encourage you to have a conversation with the GSAL folks! Please reach out- they'll be able to answer those questions best!
Chat Participant:
Hello, Is it possible to take more than 2 classes when you are on the Weekend MBA?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes it is! We sometimes will see students taking up to three- a challenging, but do-able feat!
Chat Participant:
Are there courses and credit requirements that can be waived if students have already taken certain classes before to speed up their PT MBA?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
You can't 'speed up' the MBA- all students need 20 credits in order to graduate. However- you are able to waive out of entry courses if you've taken a course before and can take a higher level course if you'd like!
Chat Participant:
Do you offer an accelerated program that allows for people with previous undergraduate courses to "pass out" of credits in the MBA program?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Chicago Booth does offer an accelerated option! Please visit this link for more information: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/early-career-programs/chicago-booth-scholars/accelerated-mba

I am excited to be part of the GSLAB program this Summer. Do you have any tips on how to maximize building relationships with faculty and peers during virtual classes, in preparation for the EW MBA application process?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Great question, one of the benefits of taking a class through GSALB is connecting with current students in the program. A great way to do this is through group work with the class. If the class you are taking is mostly/all individual work, email me at patrick.mchale@chicagobooth.edu and let me know which course and section you are in. I'll look up current students in the class and connect them with you.
Chat Participant:
Are Weekend students able to participate in the PE lab?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes, lab classes are open to all students so long as your personal/work schedule allows. Many of the lab classes take place during the day.
Chat Participant:
What is the typical time commitment for in-person vs. outside of classwork for a part-time MBA?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
That depends on the class. Each class is 3 hours and depending on the class, students typically spend an average of 3-5 hours on homework, studying, or meeting with groups outside of class. Some classes can be a bit more or less, but I would say that's pretty average.
Chat Participant:
Hi! Are there any Booth classes available to nonstudents to take one at a time that can then transfer as credit to a part time / weekend MBA if I am accepted into Booth, or other MBA programs in the future?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
You do have the opportunity as a student at large- you can find more information here; https://grahamschool.uchicago.edu/academic-programs/graduate-student/graduate-student-at-large-business
Chat Participant:
I saw Alyssa Rapp offered a course focusing on women leadership - Women As CEOs, Entrepreneurs, Investors, Executives & Directors. Are you planning to have that class available in the coming quarters, and in evening/weekend timeframe?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
I believe this is the first time this section is being offered. Depending on the faculty member's schedule, the class may be offered in the Evening/Weekend programs in the future.
Chat Participant:
When would the classes be if you are in the Weekend MBA program, and decide to take three classes?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
These classes could be on Saturday (two), and one any other day throughout the week -- as your schedule allows. Either in the Evening (which is most likely) or the day-time in the Full-Time program
Chat Participant: Are there limitations on how many classes weekend program students can choose from evening classes?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions: With the flexibility of our program, Weekend students can take Evening classes if seats are available. On average our students take 2 classes per quarter. 3 classes is a heavy load and anything more than 350 units requires approval from the Dean. But, no rule that Weekend students cannot take all Evening classes for example.
Chat Participant:
Hi, can you please share what a normal weekend schedule is like for weekend MBA?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Weekend students will typically travel to Chicago Saturday morning. We have a free shuttle service that picks up at both airports if needed. The morning section of classes is 9am-12pm. The afternoon section is 1:30-4:30pm. Various student group events take place between and after class.
Chat Participant:
How did you find the work/school balance? How many classes seemed reasonable for you to complete at once? Do you have any advice or anything you might have done differently?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
I'm somewhat of a unique case in that I started a business the same time I was starting at Booth, so I did need to figure out the optimal work/school balance. Given the craziness of my role, I had several quarters in which I only took one class at Booth. That's really something that attracted me to this program - flexibility. Also, professors are sympathetic to work/school balance challenges which has been helpful for me. So to answer your question, 2 classes per quarter is pretty standard to take, but again I had at least 3 quarters in which I took 1 class.
Chat Participant:
How do evening/weekend MBA students access resources such as in-person help from graduate TAs? Are there weekend office hours dedicated to students in part-time programs?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Yes- several resources are offered when you're on-campus! Professors and TAs will have office hours both in-person and virtually.
Chat Participant:
I have a question regarding MBA concentrations. I see each concentration has 5 courses in it. If I want to pursue part time MBA which I believe requires me to complete 20 courses, can I have 4 concentrations since each one of them has 5 courses?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
There are actually more than 5 courses that can satisfy a concentration, I believe only 5 are shared just to highlight particular courses. Some courses can also count for multiple concentrations. As a result, getting 4 concentrations is definitely possible.
Chat Participant:
For students interested in pursuing a career in M&A and /or PE, which MBA concentration(s) would you recommend?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
I would recommend entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, and Economics. There are others that relate, but these three have great classes that would help solidify your skill set for M&A and/or PE. Students tend to graduate with 3-4 different concentrations.
Student Life & Career Services Questions
Chat Participant:
Do the evening/weekend MBA have any differences in terms of recruitment opportunities when compared to the full time program?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Evening MBA & Weekend MBA students can participate in on-campus recruitment after completing 12 courses in the program and can apply to any roles. We have a robust career services center with coaches that help you with advancing your career or making a pivot. The only exception is that Evening & Weekend students cannot apply for internships. Those are only for our Full-Time students. Thanks!
Chat Participant:
Is the Full-time MBA the best for career switchers or will any version of the MBA suffice?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Over half of our students in the Weekend and Evening MBA do make a career pivot- we have a robust career services center that is available to help you do so. We have several courses that are experiential in nature and have hands-on components. However, if an internship is something you feel you need, a Full-Time program could be the best route to go. It just depends on your goals!
Chat Participant:
Can you highlight some of the ways you assist or are involved in connecting Weekend/evening MBA through the Career services? A typical experience perhaps? How often is this utilized by weekend/evening MBAs?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
I've been impressed with the ways in which evening and weekend MBA students have been able to connect. There are multiple ways in which weekend students have connected with evening students (and vice versa), including student organizations, Slack, travel/networking opportunities, etc. Despite the fact that I a am in the evening program, I have several very close friends in the weekend program. Both groups of students have access to the same resources, including career resources, and many students will reach out to others for advice, guidance, etc. Hopefully this answers your question but again please feel free to reach out more if not!
Chat Participant:
Can you share some insight on the career path that program graduate has taken? Do you have any statistic on this?
Patrick McHale | Assistant Director, Admissions:
Yes, I highly recommend reviewing our career data for Evening/Weekend students here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/part-time/career-impact
Chat Participant:
Do you have longer term data on ROI of the weekend /evening MBA programs that you can share?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
When I think about the ROI from Booth, it is something that is rather transformative and not measured by data per se. However, if you are looking to learn more about the impact the MBA can have on your career as you assess that financial ROI, I encourage you take a deep dive into our career data which provides data on industry and salary, job function and salary, employers that hired or retained Booth graduates, and the employment source students used to facilitate career changes. You can find that here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/mba/part-time/career-impact. We hope to have our more recent data finalized and reflected within the next few months.
Chat Participant:
I think I saw somewhere that there is a limit to on-campus recruiting if your company is sponsoring you. Can you elaborate on that?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
If your company is paying 8K or more per year toward your MBA, you will need permission to participate in campus recruiting. Keep in mind this is the only Career Services program that requires such permission. The career coaches can help prepare you for this conversation with your company. The vast majority of Career Services programming does not require such.
Chat Participant:
Are there events for part-time MBA students to participate in to engage further with the Booth community?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
There are larger events open to the whole Booth community, such as guest speakers. However, most Evening/Weekend MBA students participate in the Evening/Weekend student groups and social events!
Chat Participant:
Hello - is the full-quarter study abroad option viable for those of us with remote work accommodations? I'd like to know how the course load is structured.
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
In our Evening and Weekend MBA programs we offer a several week study abroad opportunity, but not for an entire quarter. Thanks!
Chat Participant:
Does the short-term study abroad program take place between quarters, or during? Also, what class does it count as?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
The coursework is for 2-3 weeks where you would be enrolled at a partner school for that duration of time. When you participate it counts for one course toward graduation.
Chat Participant:
What study abroad programs are offered for the part-time program?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
We have a part-time study abroad option allowing students to travel to one of 7 different countries. A full-Time study abroad allows students to travel for 11 weeks (one full quarter) to one of roughly 30 locations.

This question is for Jordan, or anyone that could answer, as a Latino I am very excited to see the groups like "Latin American Business Group" or "Hispanic American Business Students Association" are these type of groups meant more for FT students? Is it more difficult to network and meet these students as a PT student?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
There are some student organizations that are meant for PT and other student organizations that are more geared toward FT students. As a PT student, I can tell you I've attended a number of events where I've met FT students, and I've also attended a FT event where there were a few PT students that had attended. I wouldn't say it's more difficult to network as a PT student, but since the PT students are working, you will usually need to meet on the nights or weekends instead. There's a list of organizations geared more toward PT and those geared toward FT. I've honestly been amazed with the sheer number of organizations that exist and how well organized the groups generally are. Hopefully this helps!
General MBA Questions:
Chat Participant:
What is Booth doing to increase diversity in its MBA program? How are women represented among admitted students, professors, and student organizations?
Marcus Wordlaw | Associate Director, Admissions:
Booth has specific diversity initiatives in admissions. For example, I hosted a webinar a few weeks ago with three members of the coalition of minorities in business to discuss their perspective as minority students at Booth. Two of the three panelist were women and part of the Graduate Women in Business who offered their thoughts on women at Booth and the culture/community build. The student body has discussions within the community about issues of race and gender equality, and provides a network for like-minded students to engage each other. As a school we work closely with these groups for a platform to diversity initiates and critical programming within the university.

I plan on applying to the weekend MBA, however, I am considering moving to Chicago. Am I able to switch from the weekend MBA to the evening MBA?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Absolutely! You are able to switch between the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA program ONCE during your time at Booth. But, as you are likely reading, flexibility is one of the hallmarks of the Chicago Booth MBA Programs. So, even if you do not officially switch, you can still take courses outside of your home program. For example, an Evening student can take a course in the Weekend Program without being an actual Weekend student. The benefit of officially switching to match your availability is to ensure priority registration over the courses in your home program. So, should your situation change while in the program, then it would make sense to officially request to switch.
Chat Participant:
For your students who travel to Chicago from California, how difficult/easy is it to successfully make that commute? Are there things in place that can make traveling that distance easier?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
San Francisco and Los Angeles are places we regularly see our students traveling to and from each weekend! We do have a weekly shuttle from both of the major airports in Chicago that is free that will take you to and from the Gleacher Center each week as well as deals with area hotels. We find that our Weekend students form a wonderful community and really enjoy the time spent on the ground with one another each weekend!
Chat Participant:
I have spoken to several current and former Booth MBA students, and they were all extremely passionate about Booth. I see pursuing a program like this to be an investment, especially of one's time. What can you tell me about some of the things that set Booth apart from other top schools? What is unique to Booth? Would you be able to describe the mentality or point-of-view of this school?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
Of all the programs I evaluated, I did not see a single program that had as tight of a network and as much school pride - something that I cared about deeply. Aside from world class professors and academics, Booth has an unbelievable alumni network, amazing career resources and placement opportunities, incredible extracurricular opportunities, beautiful facilities, and as I mentioned, tons of student/staff/alumni pride. Hopefully this helps, but happy to answer more questions about this.
Chat Participant:
I'm curious about the way Evening and Weekend students can take classes and contribute to the Rustandy Center's social impact courses and labs. How does that work, and is that a common path for part-time students?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Great question! Evening and Weekend students can take full advantage of the Rustandy Center's social impact courses. There are several resources for guidance with classes, including our academic experience team. All classes aren't available every single quarter, due to professor scheduling and availability- however, there are always many choices and abundant flexibility as you pick your classes! Find out more here: https://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/weekend/academics/curriculum
Chat Participant:
Why would a Chicago resident decide to do an executive MBA over the part time or weekend MBA programs?
Andrea Calderon | Associate Director, Admissions:
Our Executive MBA program is geared much more toward those that are in more senior roles in their careers- such as managing teams and moving into senior leadership roles. We recommend the Evening or Weekend MBA for those that are looking to build a strong general management foundation.
Chat Participant:
Hello! How can I get connected with current students, more specifically students who are in my concentrations/program of interest?
Kara Northcutt | Senior Director, Employer Engagement and Admissions:
Our Connect with a Student portal is a great way to connect directly with students. It allows you to sort on a variety of interests, programs, etc. See this link to start making connections: https://apply.chicagobooth.edu/portal/studentvolunteer. If you cannot find what you are looking for, email us at EveningWeekend-Admissions@chicagobooth.edu to request a connection.
Chat Participant:
Is there camaraderie among the students in this program?
Jordan Salins | Current MBA Student:
There is amazing camaraderie in the program! There are happy hours, Booth travel trips bonding in class, extracurricular opportunities, etc. There is a tremendous amount of Booth pride. I've been in the program for 2.25 years and I've already developed a couple lifelong friendships - and I know many other students have had similar experiences. The camaraderie within the Booth family is one of the main things that attracted me to the program.
Chat Participant:
Regarding tuition payments, is there a possibility for international students to take a loan from a financial institution which has ties to Booth?
Stephanie Gunn | Director, Student Recruitment and Admissions:
We do offer loan options that do not require US co-signers. If admitted, you would work closely with our office of Financial Aid to navigate options for international student loans.
Chat Participant:
Thank you Vanessa, one last question, based on current policy, does Booth provide OPT for after part time student graduate?
Vanessa Prachack | Associate Director, Admissions Marketing:
Great question! Please visit this site for more information regarding OPT: https://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/page/opt-optional-practical-training
