Chicago Booth’s Evening MBA and Weekend MBA student clubs and organizations host events ranging from fun and social to career-focused. On Friday, July 20, the Booth Consulting Club hosted its annual flagship event, the Booth Consulting Symposium. The Symposium brought in over 50 consultants and fifteen firms, including Accenture, Altman Vilandrie & Co., AT Kearney, Bain & Co., The Boston Consulting Group, Blue Canyon Partners, CGN Global, EY, IBM, KPMG, McKinsey & Co., Roland Berger, Stax, Strategy&, and West Monroe Partners.

The event consists of a knowledge sharing session and a networking reception. It is a helpful resource for those participating in formalized Campus Recruiting for full-time jobs, which kicks off autumn quarter, as well as those exploring consulting as a potential career path. It also brings back alumni who work at consulting firms and are excited to share their professional experiences and advice with current students.

“A key component of the Campus Recruiting process is researching firms to understand if the company is the right place to begin your post-MBA career,” explained Kevin Yang, a student in the Weekend MBA Program. “Symposium gives students the opportunity to gather this information directly from the source and build relationships leading into the Campus Recruiting season,” he said.

Evening MBA student Raj Hirpara believes that the Symposium’s strength is helping students gain firsthand knowledge of the experience. “This type of event gives students going through Campus Recruiting an opportunity to develop a stronger professional network, gain valuable insight into consulting as a career, and develop an understanding of the culture of an organization,” he said.

Following the Symposium, Weekend MBA student Claire Yu reflected on her key takeaways: “In today’s fast-paced environment, the term ‘consulting’ continues to evolve and the scope of what consulting is expands. Clients are demanding customized solutions with data analytics to draw statistical correlation in better and faster decision making. Whether the consulting firm practices in the B2B enterprise strategy, M&A deal structure, or digital transformation arena, agility and adaptability are the core principles to bring value to the clients and the industry.”

The Consulting Symposium is just one of many resources at Chicago Booth that enable students to explore trends and make lasting connections with key players in their chosen fields. For students like Hirpara, this kind of exposure has an immediate benefit. “After the event, I certainly have a better understanding of where I want to work, the type of work that I want to do and have identified opportunities on how I can succeed in my fall recruiting efforts.”
