Elliott T. Raia is a second year Full-Time MBA student at Chicago Booth and currently serves as co-chair of the Management Consulting Group (MCG). In this blog, Elliott shares what makes MCG a beneficial student group to join for individuals interested in consulting and provides his detailed perspective on what makes Chicago Booth a great place to pursue consulting.
The consulting recruiting timeline is fast-paced as soon as you step on campus, but putting in the time early can mean having your summer internship figured out by mid-January while many of your classmates pursuing other industries are still deep in recruiting.
Within the first couple of weeks, firms start coming on campus, which is the unofficial kickoff to networking and coffee chats.
Around mid-to-late October, casing and behavioral interview prep begin in earnest. MCG provides a fantastic casebook and plenty of opportunities to case with 2Ys, and you are also put into a small "MCG family" with a 2Y lead who will case you weekly.
Around November, networking begins to taper off as applications come due, and by the end of the month, interview offers go out. Then comes Winter Break and…there's no way around it…it can be a slog. This is the time when most folks really buckle down to get their casing reps in.
It all pays off in the first couple of weeks of January during interviews, with summer internship offers released shortly thereafter.
The recruiting cycle can be a blur and a rollercoaster, but with so many people supporting and rooting you on, it ends up an enjoyable and rewarding process through all the hustle and bustle.
