About Elliott and Why He Decided to Pursue His MBA at Chicago Booth

Elliott grew up in Houston, Texas, and attended the University of Texas at Austin for his undergrad, where he majored in Economics and Government. Throughout undergrad, Elliott interned at a free-market think tank, where he was first introduced to the Chicago School of Economics and developed an appreciation for the Chicago Approach. After college, Elliott began his career as a consultant at Accenture, where he worked with clients in the national defense sector. After a few years of implementation and strategy work, Elliott was ready to broaden his experience across industries and functions. From there, he decided an MBA was the right next move.

For Elliott, Chicago Booth was an easy choice. Beyond Booth’s strong track record of placing students at top consulting firms, Elliott was genuinely drawn to Booth’s analytical rigor and the Chicago Approach that he had first encountered years earlier. Having also seen the growing value of data-driven thinking throughout his time at Accenture, he knew Booth's quantitative depth would complement his qualitative experience, both in the classroom and beyond.

What Makes Chicago Booth a Great MBA Pick for Consulting

Aside from Booth's strong record of placing students at the most impactful consulting firms in the world, the school's investment in consulting recruiting is evident from the outset. The cohesion between Booth's Career Services, Employer Relations, Student Life, and the student-led Management Consulting Group creates a streamlined experience that, while intense during your first quarter, is approachable and organized.

Advice for Applicants

For students interested in consulting, my biggest piece of advice is to trust the process. Whether you are coming from consulting or another industry, with a traditional or non-traditional background, the recruiting track at Booth can help anyone committed to the process put their best foot forward. As a second piece of advice—particularly for those coming from a consulting background—leverage your experience, but don't let it become a crutch. The process rewards preparation and self-awareness over assumed familiarity; and taking the time to genuinely reassess your "why consulting," your networking approach, and your casing technique will always produce better results than coasting on prior experience alone.

Academics at Booth: MBA Concentration and Curriculum Pursuits

I'm currently working on concentrations in Finance, Strategic Management, and Applied AI but have actually found a hidden interest in Accounting as well. A couple of my favorite courses so far have been Financial Statement Analysis with Professor John Hand and Consumer Behavior with Professor Daniel Bartels. The courses could not be more different from each other on the surface, but they speak to the breadth of topics in which Booth excels, with truly standout professors. Each one taught me tangible skills applicable to consulting, and, perhaps even more importantly, had unique life lessons woven throughout. As far as resources outside the classroom, MCG is, of course, the most critical, but leveraging the 2Ys' knowledge (whether they are focused on consulting or not) has been a lifesaver. Academic Services has also been a game-changer, helping me design my course schedule each quarter to grow my skill set, identify new interests, and get the most out of my time in the classroom.

About the Management Consulting Group

When it comes to recruiting consulting, joining MCG is table stakes. I can’t imagine recruiting outside of the club. Within the 2026-2027 Co-Chair cohort, we like to say that MCG provides “cradle-to-grave” support, which in other terms means the club leadership and its members (1Y’s: first year MBA students and 2Y’s: second year MBA students) are truly there for each step of the process: from exploring if consulting is something you want to do, all the way to navigating which summer offer to choose. For me personally, even though I came from consulting, I did not recruit consulting out of undergrad so having the structure, connections, and curriculum within MCG really helped me build on and reassess my experience.

Most Valuable Skill Gained While Pursuing an MBA for Consulting

Honestly, I’ve found the MCG curriculum around how to network to be incredibly helpful, especially when paired with the structured opportunities to consistently practice these skills, whether with my fellow 2Ys or firm representatives. By the end of the recruiting cycle, you really find yourself being able to genuinely talk to anyone about anything. For a profession that is ultimately so client-facing, these skills end up being just as valuable on the job as they were during the recruiting process.

Importance of Students Joining MCG if Interested in Consulting (On Scale of 1-10)

It’s a 10 for sure. MCG is like your consultant for consulting recruiting. The programming throughout the season is invaluable regardless of your pre-Booth background. Not only does it take you from square one on everything you need to know for interviews, but from a logistical standpoint, it also helps you track timelines, connect with firms, and structure your interview and case practice.

A Typical Timeline for Students Pursuing Management Consulting at Chicago Booth

The consulting recruiting timeline is fast-paced as soon as you step on campus, but putting in the time early can mean having your summer internship figured out by mid-January while many of your classmates pursuing other industries are still deep in recruiting.

  1. As soon as classes start, MCG begins weekly lunchtime meetings on Wednesdays (food provided). This is the core time to work through the MCG curriculum—how to network, how to case, where we are in the recruiting calendar, and what everyone should be focused on. You are also quickly assigned to a smaller co-chair group, so you always have someone to reach out to throughout the process.
  2. Within the first couple of weeks, firms start coming on campus, which is the unofficial kickoff to networking and coffee chats.

  3. Around mid-to-late October, casing and behavioral interview prep begin in earnest. MCG provides a fantastic casebook and plenty of opportunities to case with 2Ys, and you are also put into a small "MCG family" with a 2Y lead who will case you weekly.

  4. Around November, networking begins to taper off as applications come due, and by the end of the month, interview offers go out. Then comes Winter Break and…there's no way around it…it can be a slog. This is the time when most folks really buckle down to get their casing reps in.

  5. It all pays off in the first couple of weeks of January during interviews, with summer internship offers released shortly thereafter.

The recruiting cycle can be a blur and a rollercoaster, but with so many people supporting and rooting you on, it ends up an enjoyable and rewarding process through all the hustle and bustle.

Final Thoughts on How MGC’s Community Is a Game-Changer for Consulting Recruiting

One last thing I will say about MCG is that it is the largest professional club at Chicago Booth and also (in my biased opinion) the one most dedicated to paying-it-forward. This means that even if you have a fairly niche background, there is probably a 2Y in the club who has similar experience, successfully recruited consulting, and will be invested in your success. That is such an underrated element of the club. Having someone to strategize with, bounce ideas off of, or even just help keep the end goal in sight makes a bigger difference than people realize. The end result is ultimately an individual accomplishment, but getting there is 100% a team sport.
