One of the key ways to share more about yourself during the admissions process is through your short answer responses. The new short answer format was put in place to keep this section of the application simple, concise, and to the point. With that in mind, our biggest piece of advice is to simply answer the questions directly. Don’t overthink it. From your responses, we’re looking to gather an idea of who you are from a professional and personal standpoint.
With some insights from Chicago Booth’s Associate Dean for Student Recruitment and Admissions, Donna Swinford, we’re providing a bit of context around Booth’s decision to move towards the short answer format and sharing practical advice for approaching the four short answer prompts.
As the admissions process continues to evolve alongside the business market, the new prompts help our Admissions team get a quick snapshot of how you think, what matters to you most, and how you’re able to convey your point in just a few words. By moving away from longer essays, we’ve created a more direct opportunity for you to clearly showcase the experiences, viewpoints, and motivations that define you.
With that in mind, “Don’t overthink it,” says Associate Dean Donna Swinford. In your own words, answer the prompts in a way that allows our team to get a glimpse of who you are as a person both professionally and personally. No need to add any extra fluff!
When compiling your responses, use active verbs, concrete nouns, and at least one specific detail. Avoid qualifiers, tangents, and multiple examples if it’s not necessary. Decide what matters most and state it plainly.
Treat your short responses as anchors. Your resume offers evidence, your recommendation validates strengths, and your short responses add additional context about who you are and what you’re passionate about both personally and professionally. “Together, all of your materials help our admissions team gather a clearer picture of who you are and what you’re hoping to gain from your MBA experience,” Donna explains, reiterating that Booth takes a holistic approach in application evaluation.
Given the short response format, we understand clearly articulating why you want to pursue your MBA at Chicago Booth can be challenging. During the first application review stage, we are focused on learning more about you and your experiences. If invited to interview, you'll have the opportunity to dive deeper into your "Why Booth" during the interview process.
Prompts #1 & #2: What is your immediate post-MBA career goal? What is your long-term post-MBA career goal?
Consider prompts one and two as two chapters of the same story. Be as specific as you can, but if your plans are still forming, that’s okay too. We’re mainly looking to see that you’ve at least given your goals some real thought and can articulate them with some clarity. “Share what motivates you, why it matters, and the impact you hope to make,” says Donna. “Even if every detail isn’t yet set in stone.”
Prompt #3: Upload an image and explain its significance to you.
No such thing as the “right” image. This prompt gives you the opportunity to choose any photo you’d like in order to provide us with a glimpse into your world and hopefully share with us a peek into what makes you, you.
Prompt #4: Share a fun fact or something unique about yourself.
Short answer, no. This open-ended question is another opportunity for you to showcase your personality and share with us something that distinguishes you as an individual. One last piece of advice from Donna, “Have fun with it and use this as a chance to tell our team something we might not otherwise learn about you from the rest of your application.”
We hope you found these tips on how to approach the short answer prompts helpful as you continue to work on your application. Here are a few more touchpoints below we recommend checking out to learn more about Chicago Booth as you apply:
