The University of Chicago Booth School of Business today announced that Yueran Ma, associate professor of finance and Kathryn and Grant Swick faculty scholar, is the winner of the AQR Asset Management Institute Young Researcher Awards 2023.

The annual award recognizes talented new academics producing innovative and impactful research, and is open to junior faculty members with up to five years of work experience at any recognized higher education institution worldwide. The winner receives £10,000.

Dr. Ma was recognized for her outstanding contributions to academic research. Her work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, American Economics Review, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics.

Anna Pavlova, professor of finance at London Business School and co-academic director of the school’s AQR Asset Management Institute, said Dr. Ma’s work would resonate for years to come. “Yueran Ma is recognized for the scope and depth of her work. Her papers ‘Anatomy of Corporate Borrowing Constraints’ and ‘100 Years of Rising Corporate Concentration’ are likely to become standard references in PhD-level courses,” she said.

Dr. Ma said: “Thank you for this generous award and the kind support for research by the AQRAsset Management Institute. It is a privilege to be able to pursue this path and I am grateful for everything that makes this possible. As always, I am indebted to the inspirations and influence from my collaborators, colleagues, friends, and many others.”

The AQR Asset Management Institute was launched in January 2015 with a mission to become the leader for asset management related research, study and recruitment and a center for thought leadership.
