Biography
William Cassidy is an Assistant Professor of Finance at Washington University in St. Louis’s Olin Business School. He joined Olin in July 2023 after receiving his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Professor Cassidy holds a B.A. in Mathematical Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Before his doctoral studies, he was a Research Professional at the Fama-Miller Center for Research in Finance.
Professor Cassidy’s research focuses on asset pricing and political economy, emphasizing how political forces influence financial markets. A common thread in his work is the use of large-scale datasets and natural language processing techniques. His current projects explore topics such as the political drivers of asset prices and the role of big data in understanding market reactions to policy changes.
In addition to his research, Professor Cassidy teaches courses in finance at Olin and regularly presents his work at leading academic conferences, including the Western Finance Association, the European Finance Association, the SFS Cavalcade, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. His work has received several honors, including the Yiran Fan Memorial and Arnold Zellner Doctoral prizes. He has been a referee for journals such as the Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Review of Asset Pricing Studies, Journal of Banking and Finance, Review of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and Management Science. His research has also been featured in The Economist and the Chicago Booth Review.
