Study Abroad in London A Quarter in the Capital of Global Innovation

Sightseeing wasn’t on Louis Bock’s mind when he enrolled in Booth’s Global Innovation and Impact: Study Abroad in London program.

Bock, who’s a student in the Asness and Liew Master in Finance Program, had visited London several times before as a tourist. He’s originally from Luxembourg, just two hours away by plane. This time, however, he was seeking more than souvenirs: professional and personal connections to help him build a future career.

Thanks to the program’s many in- and out-of-class networking opportunities, Bock left with a solid professional base in London—invaluable for his future career in mergers and acquisitions. At the same time, he also left with a new view of a city he’d only previously experienced in short trips.

“Visiting a place and living there are two different things,” he says. “I didn’t know anyone before starting the program. Now I have some close friendships and relationships that have formed out of it.”

Building Skills in an Innovation Hub

Bock is one of 20 students who participated in the inaugural London study abroad program during the Winter Quarter. The participants, from Booth’s Master in Management Program and the Asness and Liew MiF Program, completed three courses that counted toward their graduate degrees—The Wealth of Nations; Innovation Lab; and Global Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital, and Private Equity. The classes were held at the Robert Rothman, ’77, London Campus.

Chang-Tai Hsieh, the Phyllis and Irwin Winkelried Distinguished Service Professor of Economics and the PCL Faculty Scholar, taught The Wealth of Nations. In the course, students examined what drives economic growth, from resource allocation to urbanization, using global case studies such as China and Venezuela to understand why some economies thrive while others stall.

In their Innovation Lab course, taught by visiting professor of finance Per Stromberg, students gained hands-on experience in collaboration, analysis, and client-facing decision-making by tackling real business challenges for several London-based firms.

And in Global Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital, and Private Equity, students explored how startups scale in emerging markets, analyzing real-world cases on funding, deal structuring, and how investors create value. Emanuele Colonnelli, the Joseph L. Gidwitz Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship, taught the course.

Colonnelli’s course was a highlight for MiF student Stephen Kallubhavi, who was drawn to the study abroad program’s entrepreneurial focus. He came to London eager to explore the city’s startup and venture capital space and gained valuable lessons from the course.

“A balance of rigorous case work with guest speakers made the course engaging,” Kallubhavi says. “Professor Colonnelli was a phenomenal teacher who stimulated participation from everyone and developed our skill sets.”

“It was a good opportunity to get out of my comfort zone. And it was great to meet new people in a new environment.”

Learning Outside of the Classroom

Students in the program also had access to several Booth-sponsored events, many of which took place at the Rothman Campus. One event was a fireside chat featuring Deloitte global chair Anna Marks, who provided students with practical tips for leading with clarity and confidence in uncertain times.

The students also traveled as a cohort outside of London, including trips to Oxford, a Jameson distillery, and Adam Smith’s Panmure House in Edinburgh, Scotland.

At Panmure House, they learned about Smith’s life in his later years and saw a first-edition copy of the book that shaped modern capitalism and classical economics. “Visiting Adam Smith’s Panmure House was a great way to connect what we study in class with where it all began,” Bock says. “Seeing a first-edition copy of The Wealth of Nations in Adam Smith’s home made it feel very real.”

Those connections to European history and culture, along with London’s integral role in the global economy, underscore why Booth moved its European campus from Barcelona, Spain, to London in 2005.

“London is one of the world’s most international and connected global financial centers, and it’s an incredible place to live, learn, and create a career in business,” says Elizabeth O’Neill, associate dean for Booth’s global degree programs and executive director of the Rothman Campus. “Studying at our London campus—the home of Booth’s community in the EMEA region—provides MiM and MiF students with a unique opportunity to expand their intellectual horizons and grow their professional networks.”

By combining Booth’s focus on global education with its emphasis on real-world application, the study abroad program offered students invaluable training to work and lead in a globalized world.

“Offering this program reflects Booth’s commitment to giving emerging business leaders a truly global, experiential education—one that complements rigorous coursework with firsthand exposure to international markets and cultures,” says Starr Marcello, AM ’04, MBA ’17, deputy dean for MBA and masters programs. “My hope is that students returned not only with a deeper understanding of global business dynamics, but also with the confidence, curiosity, and cross-cultural fluency to lead in any environment.”

Along with those skills, Bock is also leaving with lasting memories with his classmates, like when they stumbled upon a karaoke night during the class trip to Edinburgh. “It was a good opportunity to get out of my comfort zone,” he says of his study abroad experience. “And it was great to meet new people in a new environment.”
