X.Y.'s research develops practical applications and theoretical foundations for emerging techniques in artificial intelligence, nonsmooth optimization, and data science by leveraging massive computational experiments and mathematical geometry. He holds a PhD in Operations Research and Information Engineering from Cornell, MS in Statistics from Stanford, and a BSE in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton. Prior to joining Booth, he is worked for Prof. David L. Donoho at Stanford as a postdoctoral scholar, and he received his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Adrian S. Lewis at Cornell. He co-discovered the now-widely-studied Neural Collapse phenomenon in deep neural network training and co-invented the Survey Descent method for nonsmooth optimization. For these works, he received the ICLR 2022 Outstanding Paper Award and was a finalist for the ICCOPT 2022 Best Paper Prize for Young Researchers. His past and present collaborators include the Frick Art Reference Library in NYC, the USC Keck School of Medicine, and the Veolia North America utilities company.
