Samuel received his master’s degree in Accounting from Michigan Ross and his bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Economics (Actuarial Science) from Western Kentucky University. His current research focuses on the role that accounting, corporate regulation, and financial institutions play in developing economies.
Outside of academia, he enjoys traveling, playing tennis, practicing piano, and leading the choir at his local church.
Samuel Chang
Alex received his bachelor's degree in business administration and economics from Seoul National University. He also holds a master's degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from the same institution. His research examines information processing of investors and the use of unstructured information in the capital market.
Outside of academia, Alex enjoys playing the piano and cooking.
Laura received her bachelor's degree in management with a concentration in accounting from Tsinghua University. Her professional background includes roles in investment banking and private equity investment. Prior to joining the PhD program at Chicago Booth, Laura worked as a research fellow at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
In her spare time, Laura enjoys cooking, skiing and wildlife photography.
Hanbyul earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Kookmin University and then completed her master's in Economics at Penn State University. During her master's studies, she developed a specific interest in labor economics, focusing particularly on maternal job decision-making.
In her leisure time, she enjoys practicing yoga, ballet, and cooking.
Carolina earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2019. She also holds a Master of Accountancy degree and a Certificate in Business, Environment and Social Responsibility from the same institution. Prior to joining the PhD program at Chicago Booth, Carolina worked in auditing at a Big 4 firm in the United States and Brazil. She is broadly interested in researching topics relating to fraud motivation and fraud prevention.
In her spare time, Carolina enjoys running, dancing, meeting with friends and trying new restaurants.
Carolina Maia Silva Araújo
Esteban earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Economics from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). Before joining the PhD program at Booth, he worked as a Research Assistant at PUC, the Central Bank of Chile, and the World Bank. His interests lie in understanding how accounting information influences real economic outcomes and decision-making processes.
In his spare time, Esteban enjoys playing tennis, video games, and going to the gym.
Esteban Aburto
Subhradip earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University in 2015, an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad in 2019, and an MS in Management from Cornell University in 2022. Prior to joining the PhD program in accounting, Subhradip worked as a product manager in the tech industry.
During his free time, he enjoys running, swimming, and playing tennis.
Subhradip Sarker
Jizhou received his bachelor's degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the PhD program, he served as a research professional at Chicago Booth. He is broadly interested in banking, financial reporting transparency, and issues related to corporate political connections.
In his spare time, Jizhou enjoys watching movies and hiking. Despite not being particularly talented in the culinary arts, he also enjoys cooking.

Hazel received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Accounting from Brigham Young University. She is primarily interested in accounting as a framework to facilitate coordination.

Yijing received her bachelor's degree in Economics from Jinan University and her master's degree in Computational Social Science from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the PhD program, she worked as a research professional at Chicago Booth. Her research interests lie at the intersection of capital markets and artificial intelligence, exploring how large language models can deepen our understanding of financial information and investor behavior.
In her spare time, Yijing enjoys skiing, rock climbing, and painting. She also enjoys cooking and playing cello, though her cat Snow remains her most loyal audience.
