Toby -> EveryoneHi everyone! Only a couple more weeks until our final application deadline - looking forward to chatting with you for the next 30 minutes today!
Moderator -> EveryoneHello everyone. Welcome to our live chat! Thank you for joining us today. We are eager to answer all your questions, so please begin submitting them now.
Sherman -> MelissaWhat are the pre-requisite for MBA executive program?
Melissa -> ShermanSherman, thank you for your question. There are no official prerequisites for the Executive MBA program. Our students are, however, working professionals that have, on average, 14 years of work experience.
Sherman -> MelissaWhat kind of financial aid that can be provided and who is Chicago Booth partnered with, if any to provide the financial aid?
Melissa -> ShermanSherman, Chicago Booth has a team of people dedicated to assisting with the financial aid needs of our students. I will be happy to connect you with them directly. Feel free to send me an email at melissa.patterson@chicagobooth.edu and I will ensure you get their contact information.
CraigT -> Tobywhat is the core curriculum?
Toby -> CraigTHi Craig - The curriculum for the Executive MBA Program is lock-step - meaning almost all of the courses are predetermined and presented to you in a specific order. We separate the curriculum into 5 sections - Foundations, Functions, Management, Business Environment and LEAD - you can dive more deeply into the specific classes using the link below. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/exec-mba/academics/curriculum
MadanGopal -> TobyWANT TO KNOW ABOOUT THE DBA AS WELL AS E MBA PROGRAMME .
Toby -> MadanGopalHello MadanGopal - We won't be able to answer any questions about the Doctoral program but if there are specific things you hope to learn about the Executive MBA please let us know.
Moderator -> EveryonePlease continue to submit your questions! We will try to answer all of them today.
CraigT -> Tobyhow does the elective week work? are we relegated to picking one set of courses?
Toby -> CraigTIn general Electives courses are rare in Executive MBA Programs. We are thrilled to be able to offer around 30 courses each year for our students to choose from. You choose four of the thirty courses and take them over two consecutive weeks in your second summer. It's also worth noting that the London and Hong Kong cohorts attend the Electives weeks with the Chicago Cohort so you are taking these classes with your international classmates.
AJ_Blackston -> MelissaCan an MBA candidate complete the requirements for a PMP or CPA while @ Booth?
Melissa -> AJ_BlackstonAJ_Blackston, thank you for your question. I think it would be easier to discussion the specific requirements of each in more detail offline. Please feel free to email the Executive MBA program at xp@chicagobooth.edu so we can set up a time to discuss in more detail.
MRC2008 -> TobyHow much classwork should I expect outside of class?
Toby -> MRC2008Hi MRC - The amount of work outside of class depends on a couple things - firstly is your own personal expertise. For example a person with a CPA will spend less time on accounting homework, etc. I've heard everywhere from 5 to 20 hours a week depending. I'd also point out that you share a lot of this work with your study group - a group of about 6 classmates that will turn in many assignments and projects together.
CraigT -> TobyDo most EMBA graduates change careers upon graduation?
Toby -> CraigTOur students join the program for many reasons - some looking to change careers, some looking to move up in their current organization and some looking to explore entrepreneurial potential. What we have found is that a person's goals in earning an MBA from Booth match up very well with what they accomplish. So those that WANT to change careers do.
sanjeev -> TobyHello Everyone....... I am interested in Executive MBA
Toby -> sanjeevHi Sanjeev - welcome - what questions can we answer for you?
David_Piza_C. -> MelissaHi Everyone: What about prospective students with around 8 years of work experiences? What is your opinion on younger applicants that see and could bring value to the program?
Melissa -> David_Piza_C.David_Piza_C, this is a great question. I always tell applicants to think in terms of the quality of the work experience they bring as opposed to the quantity. 39 is an average age of our students - as such we definitely have students on the lower end of that spectrum that have great professional experience and value to share in a classroom environment.
CraigT -> TobyDuring the weeks in Hong Kong and London is what is the schedule like?
Toby -> CraigTThe International weeks are academic - you will have class from 9am to 4:30 pm and many evenings will have optional review sessions. That said there is plenty of time to network with your classmates and explore these great cities together.
sanjeev -> TobyI just have 10 years of work experience and I am founder of 1 company and co-founder of 2 companies so will i be eligble?
Toby -> sanjeevYou are certainly eligible to apply. We evaluate applicants on three primary criteria:
1. Can you manage the academic portion of the program?
2. Are you goals in earning and MBA consistent with the experience we provide?
3. How do you hope to add value to the experience of your classmates?

If you believe you have strong answers to these questions then we want you in the program!
sanjeev -> TobyIs GMAT mandatory?
Toby -> sanjeevYes and No. We require a GMAT or GRE score but offer an opportunity for you to apply for a waiver. We grant waivers to applicants than can display superior analytical capabilities. To apply for a GMAT Waiver visit the GMAT/GRE section of the application and you will see a link to submit. GMAT Waiver requests are reviewed and sent out every couple of days so you will learn very quickly whether or not we need a GMAT from you.
Christopher -> MelissaI am an attorney with 20 years experience and I do not really want to sit for yet another standardized test e.g. GMAT/GRE......what is the % likelihood of a waiver?
Melissa -> ChristopherChristopher, I am copying the information from our website regarding the GMAT waiver process. I hope this helps you understand the necessarily steps and likelihood of a waiver being granted.
Very senior level managers, usually with twelve or more years of management experience may be granted an exemption from the GMAT/GRE requirement. Examples might include CEOs, Managing Directors, CFOs, and Division Heads etc. A waiver may also be considered for a candidate whose work experience and training indicate a high level of quantitative and analytical skill and an ability to apply those skills to a rigorous and analytical MBA Program. Examples might include: Treasurer or Chief Accounting Officer, or a CFA, or a candidate possessing another advanced degree or diploma in a quantitative field. The criteria above are not meant to be exhaustive and candidates who believe they are able to provide evidence of similar quality not listed are encouraged to speak to an admissions representative. To be considered for a waiver, you must have completed the "personal," "academic record," and "work experience" sections of the application, and have uploaded a copy of your resume and transcripts. Your waiver request will not be processed until all of these sections are complete. Once these sections have been completed, please fill out the Waiver Request Form found in the application section "GMAT/GRE Scores." We will review your request and notify you of the decision on your waiver as soon as possible.
kiran -> Tobywill be there be any class cancellations due to weather issues?
Toby -> kiranHi Kiran - almost never. I've been here 7 years and only seen it once. In instances where the weather is keeping people from flying in to class we will sometimes record the classes.
Christopher -> MelissaCan you define "superior analytical capabilities"
Melissa -> ChristopherChristopher, hopefully the detailed information from the website that I just posted helps clarify the types of applicants that are granted a waiver. If you would like to discuss this in more detail, please feel free to contact me at melissa.patterson@chicagobooth.edu
CraigT -> TobyWhat arrangements or help if any, is made for students coming in from out of state?
Toby -> CraigTHi Craig - 60% of our students are flying in. We have a hotel program that you are eligible to opt in to where we basically make all of your arrangements for you. We also shuttle all students back to the airports at the end of class on Saturdays. Other than those couple areas of logistics you are the same as any other student.
sanjeev -> Tobywhat is the maximum duration of the complete course work ?
Toby -> sanjeevI'm not sure I understand the questions but the entire program is 21 months (7 academic quarters) - let me know if this is what you mean.
CraigT -> Tobywhat is the historical acceptance rate for applicants to the Executive MBA program
Toby -> CraigTwe don't share our acceptance rate for a number of different reasons. Basically we are a highly competitive institution but because we are putting together a cohort and working very hard to make sure the cohort is diverse in terms of industry, functional and cultural experiences you are not competing for spots with the entire applicant pool so any numbers would not be representativ of reality.
sanjeev -> TobyTotal fee for the program?
Toby -> sanjeevTotal fees include: tuition, 5 weeks of hotel stay (in Chicago, London and Hong Kong), all class materials (books etc), and most of your food. Total fee for 21 months is $174,000
Moderator -> EveryoneWe are almost half way through the chat and have had great questions so far. Please continue to submit your questions! We will try to answer all of them today.
David_Piza_C. -> MelissaIn a normal year what % of a cohort is international? what are the most common nationalities, backgrounds of the international students?
Melissa -> David_Piza_C.David, we had 11 different countries of citizenship represented in the most recent cohort here at the Chicago campus. When you factor in the campuses in London and Hong Kong, this number increases significantly.
siva -> TobyCan I still apply for the class starting in May 2015?
Toby -> sivaYes! Our final application deadline is April 1st.
sanjeev -> TobyHow many days in a week we have classes and what are the timings?
Toby -> sanjeevHi Sanjeev - use the link below to see a program calendar with the exact dates you would be in class. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/~/media/BF0EF0FC6FD84C2C8A0154764DC16E6A.pdf
Christopher -> MelissaThanks Melissa. It seems that the criteria, as I suspected, is mostly for what I call numbers people. Booth, not many MBA programs for that matter, take in many attorney's. I have an extremely non-mathematical analytical background and level of complex strategy assessment that should equate to the numbers people. Having said that, I have been told by holders of MBA's to not hold my breath.
Melissa -> ChristopherChristopher, the GMAT waiver application does allow for the applicant to provide a personal statement with more detail regarding why he/she believe they should be granted the waiver. Perhaps you can add some additional information to that statement. And, again, I am happy to talk about this in more detail. Feel free to email!
AJ_Blackston -> MelissaIF we are unable to make the April 1 deadline, what is the next deadline?
Melissa -> AJ_BlackstonApril 1 is the final deadline for the June 2015 start. Our first deadline for the cohort that will start in June 2016 will be in early October. If you would like to start in June 2015 but are unsure about making the April 1 deadline, please feel free to contact me directly so I can provide guidance on how to make this happen.
Melissa -> EveryoneThank you all for joining us today. I am happy to address any additional questions not answered to day at melissa.patterson@chicagobooth.edu
Toby -> EveryoneHi everyone - sorry for the previous message - the chat is scheduled to end at 12:30 today. Please feel free to follow up with us at xp@chicagobooth.edu for any more questions.
