The University of Chicago Alumni Association and the International Harper Lecture Series present "The Rise of Liberalism," a lecture, followed by a reception at the University of Chicago Center in Paris. Speakers for the evening include Jennifer Pitts, Associate Professor Political Science at the University of Chicago, Philip Golub, Associate Professor of International Relations and International Political Economy at Université Paris 8 and the American University of Paris and Gilles Manceron, Historian, French colonialism specialist.

Event Details

Recent years have seen vigorous debates about the "liberal" position on empire. Some argue that liberalism is inherently anti-imperialist, while others suggest that liberalism has always had an imperialist core. The argument of this talk, based on the book A Turn to Empire (Princeton 2005, Les Editions de l'Atelier 2008), is that liberalism has furnished both some of the most eloquent critiques and some of the most insistent defenses of empire.
