Event Details

“Gary Garrabrant loves emerging markets. He also loves being early into a market. Since forming Equity International with Sam Zell in 1999, the chief executive officer has travelled the world in search of the next opportunity. He is, in a word, relentless.” – PERE Magazine, May 2009 Recognized as a leading investor and builder of companies in the most compelling emerging markets of Brazil and China and beyond, Equity International (EI) has led the institutionalization of companies and countries as it developed a reputation for identifying and capitalizing on the most potent growth trends world-over. Living a “no stone unturned” philosophy, the EI team has traveled to the remote states of the former Soviet Union, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Sub-Saharan Africa, China, Vietnam and virtually all of Latin America. Along the way, they’ve met with country presidents, royal families, corporate leaders, oligarchs, heirs and heiresses, accomplished and aspiring entrepreneurs. This intrepid nature provided the Company early access to opportunities and has led to outstanding returns. While the global economic crisis has left many investment firms saddled with huge losses and struggling to return pennies on the dollar to investors, EI has successfully realized a multiple of over 3x invested capital through a focused strategy of co-investment and active involvement with local operating partners. This is easy to talk about and very hard to execute. EI’s portfolio companies include industry leaders Homex (NYSE:HXM), Gafisa (NYSE:GFA) and BR Malls (Bovespa:BRML3), all of which capitalize on the explosive growth of the middle-class in emerging economies. EI has rung the New York Stock Exchange opening bell three times with its portfolio companies, representing firsts for Mexico, Brazil and China. Opportunistic, global, entrepreneurial, intrepid, active, early, agile, courageous and partner-oriented are defining characteristics of the Company. Fueled by the belief that there is no comparison between emerging and developed markets in terms of growth potential, EI is ever on the lookout for new opportunities. As a result, EI is one of the leading players redefining the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and turning their attentions to the CIVETS (Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey, South Africa). Hear more about these new investment frontiers and EI’s successful approach to investing and partnering in emerging markets from Gary Garrabrant, CEO of Equity International, at the upcoming CEO Roundtable on September 14.
