Event Details

In his forthcoming book, The Source of Financial Crisis, Dr. Aliber asserts that the financial meltdown of 2008 was quite predictable - the same old song - as it was the fourth wave of financial crisis since the early 1980s. If the patterns and trajectory of meltdowns are so similar from one wave to another, why is the current international currency arrangement still dysfunctional and is a fifth wave only a matter of time? Why did Iceland ride the roller coaster from boom to bust, and is China's property boom on the verge of a bust?

Join the International Roundtable for a spirited presentation of Dr. Aliber's provocative assertion that international financial crises are inevitable as long as booms accelerate unsustainable levels of frenzy and lead to myopic behavior that obscure the eventual adjustment to equilibrium...just as Charles Kindleberger and Bob Aliber have been saying for decades in Manias, Panics and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises, now in its sixth edition.

If we're lucky, Dr. Aliber might be persuaded to hum a few lines from 'It's the Same Old Song,' the hit song by Motown legend the Four Tops.
