David Smith, CFA (Moderator) '06
Managing Partner, Marquette Associated

Dave is a managing partner for Marquette Associates. An owner of the firm, Dave has been with the company since 2009. He serves as the lead investment consultant on several of the firm's relationships and serves as the vice chair of the traditional investment manager search committee.

Prior to joining Marquette, Dave was a vice president of investor relations at Northern Trust Global Investments where he was responsible for developing business among significant institutional investors. He began his career at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange with a derivatives trading firm.

Dave holds a B.S.B.A. in finance from the University of Richmond and an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He is a CFA charterholder and a member of the CFA Society of Chicago.

Dave is co-chair of the Investment Management Alumni Roundtable at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and serves on The Goodman Theater Scenemakers Board.

Alex Shingler, CFA (Panelist)

Alex is a member of BlackRock's Multi-Asset Strategies group, and a portfolio manager for income-oriented multi-asset portfolios. Prior to his current role, Mr. Shingler served as a research analyst and portfolio manager within European and US Credit Strategies. Before joining BlackRock in 2009 in London, Mr. Shingler was Head of European Research at R3 Capital Partners and its predecessor. From 1999 to 2007, Mr. Shingler was with Seneca Capital Advisors, focusing on special situation equity and debt investments. He began his career as an analyst with J.P. Morgan. Mr. Shingler earned an AB degree, summa cum laude, in philosophy from Princeton University.

Prior to being chief strategist, he served as the Valuation & Accounting Strategist at UBS, a Quantitative Strategist at Deutsche Bank and an industry equity analyst at Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse and at NatWest Markets

Dave is the head of the Institutional Solutions Group at Nuveen Asset Management. He is responsible for utilizing the firm's multi-asset class capabilities to develop customized investment solutions for defined benefit pension plans, insurance companies, workers compensation pools and other institutions. He is also a portfolio manager of Nuveen's Intelligent Risk Portfolios® – a suite of volatility-managed, global allocation strategies.
Dave began working in the financial services industry in 1998. Prior to joining the firm in 2013, he served as managing director and head of customized strategies at Cutwater Asset Management, where he managed over $9 billion of customized mandates. His background includes structuring and managing complex liability-driven investing programs, which utilize multiple strategies in different currencies. During his career, Dave has developed innovative solutions for clients seeking to optimize their business profile, generate value, de-risk or manage liquidity. He possesses strong capabilities in treasury management, structuring and capital modeling, risk management and hedging. He started his career in the financial industry as a mergers and acquisitions analyst at Thompson Financial.
Dave received a B.A. in economics from the University of Albany and an M.B.A. in finance from Fordham University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation from the CFA Institute and is a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.
