Disruptive Business Models: Strategy Management Practices Information Group (SMPIG) Live Discussion

Chicago Booth Alumni Club of Chicago

August 17, 2012: 7:30 AM - 8:40 AM

Is it possible to differentiate an annoyance from a disruptor? The investment in NOAA improved the accuracy of their hurricane tracking and their ability to issue timely warnings. When heeded, warnings can minimize the impact of the storm. Likewise there is value in preparedness for black swans, or other rare but knowable events. Disruptors, by definition, catch us off guard, appear without warning or notice and thus make it difficult, if not impossible to create a radar scan to notice their appearance or entry into the marketplace. After they appear, how easy is it to time or size their impact on your profitability?

Event Details

The Strategic Management Practices Issues Group offers a more interactive alternative to Chicago Booth's alumni round tables. Attendance at each session is limited to 20 participants, who gather for a facilitated discussion of suggested articles on a strategy topic chosen for that month. The articles are chosen to dig a little deeper and thus we go beyond the usual sources. All perspectives are honored and the facilitator ensures a lively discussion with balanced participation. The group is a great way to challenge your own ideas, gain new perspectives, and get to know fellow Booth alums better. No matter what aspect of strategy your work entails, this forum provides an enjoyable way to sharpen your business acumen. Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month, except December, from 7:30 until 8:45 AM.

We have also instituted a blog where when time permits, some of the finer discussion points are shared and we encourage you to read and share the articles or chime whether you do or don't make the discussion. Go to : http://strategyinsight.wordpress.com

We hope to see you at an upcoming meeting*, where you can update your MBA, interact with fellow Booth alums, expand your professional network ... and still make it to the office by 9:00 AM!
