Large-scale computing has exponentially increased our ability to evaluate data, but it has also increased our energy consumption. While renewable-energy sources like wind and solar help reduce our carbon footprint, there are some drawbacks to their use. Zero-carbon cloud computing might be a solution.

With ambitious new renewable-energy standards, power grids could create hours of "stranded power"—energy that is generated but has no economic value and thus is often wasted. Computer scientist Andrew A. Chien will explain how the zero-carbon cloud takes advantage of this stranded power to create cost-effective computing with minimal environmental impact.
