Join us in Hong Kong on March 7 for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Programme on Social Innovation's Social Impact Leadership Series event: The Economic Tradeoffs of Mandating Emissions Disclosures.
Chicago Booth's Haresh Sapra, the Charles T. Horngren Professor of Accounting and the inaugural Raymond Hung Faculty in Residence in Hong Kong, will present his new research on worldwide emissions mandates and their impact. Sapra is a leading authority on the effects of accounting measurement policies, disclosure regulation, and corporate governance.
A panel of esteemed experts will then share their perspectives on corporate greenhouse gas disclosure and reporting in Hong Kong, in a conversation moderated by Professor Sapra.

Haresh Sapra (Speaker)
Charles T. Horngren Professor of Accounting, Chicago Booth
Haresh Sapra studies the real effects of accounting measurement policies, disclosure regulation, and corporate governance. He has written extensively on issues of disclosure, transparency, and financial reporting for financial institutions. His current research is on the costs and benefits of climate-related disclosures. He is particularly interested in the implications of cross-country disparity in climate disclosure regulation His research has been published in journals such as The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Games and Economic Behavior and the Journal of Accounting and Economics.
He teaches in all the programs at Booth including a financial reporting to Executive students, an MBA elective on Deal Structuring to full time and part time students, and a PhD course on the economic modeling of accounting issues. Sapra has won numerous teaching awards in all the programs at Booth. Sapra has been named one of the top-ranked professors in BusinessWeek's Guide to the Top Business Schools.
Sapra earned a PhD in Business Administration in 2000 from the University of Minnesota and then joined the Chicago Booth faculty in 2000.
Sapra is a six star marathoner who has competed in over thirty marathons with a personal best time of 2:53:06.
Mark Harper (Panelist)
Group Head of Sustainability, John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited
Mark Harper has worked for around 20 years in the field of corporate sustainability. As Group Head of Sustainability at Swire, Harper is responsible for managing the Group Sustainable Development Office, and leading on the design, execution and performance monitoring of global corporate strategy for sustainability for the Swire Group, and on acting as the lead change agent in driving improved sustainability performance and best practices, with a view to further embed sustainability into overall business strategy for Swire.
Harper has extensive experience of ESG disclosure standards such as GRI and the Hong Kong Exchange ESG Reporting Guide, as well as conducting sector focused benchmarking studies, corporate environmental management, as well as organizing hands-on corporate citizenship and CSR training programs.
Before joining John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited, Harper worked in a number of senior management roles at high profile NGOs including the Earthwatch Institute, Fauna & Flora International, China Water Risk, and Business Environment Council, where he was responsible for managing the organizations advisory services on ESG reporting and corporate sustainability strategy development.
Kamran Khan (Panelist)
Managing Director, Head of ESG for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Deutsche Bank
Kamran Khan is Deutsche Bank's Group-level Head of ESG in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. He established and heads Deutsche Bank's ESG Centre of Excellence (COE) in Singapore. The COE works with coverage and product teams to engage clients and execute ESG transactions which meet global ESG standards while addressing the unique challenges in APAC. The COE houses cross-divisional expertise covering all areas of sustainable finance, including ESG-linked and aligned bonds, loans and derivatives as well as ESG due diligence for M&A transactions. Khan is a member of Deutsche Bank Group's Global Sustainability Steering Committee.
Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Khan established Infra-Tech Capital, an impact fund investing in companies utilizing technology to provide infrastructure services and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals. He was previously appointed by the Obama White House to serve as the head of global investments and operations at the US Millennium Challenge Corporation, where he led a USD 1.5-2bn annual investment program globally with responsibility for returns as well as impact.
Khan previously held senior executive roles at the World Bank and worked on M&A transactions and advisory mandates at JP Morgan and LEK. He also served as a US Foreign Service Officer with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and an Advisor on Infrastructure Finance to APEC, ASEAN, and the G-20.
Christine Loh (Panelist)
Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, HKUST
Professor Christine Loh, SBS, JP, OBE, Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite, is Chief Development Strategist, Institute for the Environment, at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She was Under Secretary for the Environment in the HKSAR Government (2012-17) and a Member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council (1992-97 and 1998-2000). Loh has been active in public policy and politics since the 1980s. She founded and was the CEO of the non-profit think tank, Civic Exchange (2000-12), and helped to establish several non-profit organizations in Hong Kong related to the environment, equal opportunity, arts and culture, as well as human rights.
Loh is currently a board member of CDP Worldwide, Global Maritime Forum, New Forests Pty Ltd, and Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited. She is also Scholar in Residence at Asia Society Hong Kong (2023-24). She is a published author of many academic and popular works, her latest book is on Covid-19. Loh is a lawyer by training, and a commodities trader by profession. She received her legal training in England, and received honorary degrees of Doctor of Law from the University of Hull and Doctor of Science from the University of Exeter.
Hendrik Rosenthal (Panelist)
Director, Group Sustainability, CLP Holdings Limited
Hendrik Rosenthal is responsible for the Group's sustainability-related strategy, reporting and communications. He supports the senior management in sustainability and climate change-related risk management and advises on sustainability matters of the Group's power business in the Asia-Pacific region.
With more than 20 years of experience in sustainability and environmental management across the public, private and NGO sectors, Rosenthal previously led research and consulting projects in Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Rosenthal currently sits on a number of committees on sustainability-related matters, including as Director of the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Co-Chair of the Sustainability Committee for the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, and an advisory panel member for the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), amongst others.
