Event Details

This case study provides a rigorous analysis on the impact of trade tariffs using the example of washing machines. Following the late-2017 announcement of tariffs on all washers imported to the United States, the authors find that prices increased by about 12 percent in the first half of 2018. In addition, prices for dryers—often purchased in tandem with washing machines—also rose by about 12 percent, even though dryers were not subject to a tariff. The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics released a research brief to complement the working paper, and this research has received extensive coverage in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Forbes, Fortune, NBC News, and several other outlets. Join us for this provocative discussion.
