Michael Porter's Five competitive Forces framework, originally published in 1979, today remains the most extensively used strategic framework. In fact Larry Summers has often referred to it as he charters a course for the country. The robust nature of the framework, however, has not always proven easy to execute. The ongoing sputtering of the economy and some of our recent discussions on disruptive forces led us to seek out a framework, and Porter's work was the logical choice. In 2008, Porter published a re-affirmation of his seminal 1979 article and added some interesting new insights and cases.
