Mark Campanale (Speaker)
Co-Founder, Social Stock Exchange
Mark Campanale worked as a development economist in the not for profit sector, before accepting a role in the City just over twenty years ago by joining the investment research desk of the first ecological fund in London. Mark’s area of interest now is in the finance of clean tech companies, sustainable asset management and ecosystems services, principally forests. Mark is a co-founder of the sustainable investment businesses firstly at Jupiter Asset Management with the Ecology Funds (1989-1994); NPI with Global Care Funds (1994-1999); AMP Capital with the Sustainable Future Funds (1999-2001) and Henderson Global Investors with the Industries of the Future Fund (1999-2006). Mark is an advisor to Halloran Philanthropies and co founder of the Social Stock Exchange funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. He retains his FSA authorization through a small corporate finance practice in London specializing in forestry, agriculture and clean technology.
Mark is a Founder Director of the UK Sustainable & Responsible Investment Forum (1990-2008), served on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development working group on capital markets leading up to the 1992 Earth Summit; was a Member of the Steering Committee of UNEP Financial Sector Initiative (1999-2003), serves as Hon Treasurer, The Rainforest Foundation (UK) (2004-present), Advisory Board member of 3iG, the International Interfaith Investment Group. Mark holds an M.Sc in Agricultural Economics from Wye College.
The Social Stock Exchange's goal is to be an authorised and recognised investment exchange that will allow private and institutional investors to finance high social impact businesses. It will enable social businesses with core values to meet investors with a similar focus.
Andrew Irvine, '08 (EXP-13) (Speaker)
CEO, TUSK Capital
Andrew Irvine is the CEO of TUSK Capital Management (UK) and a Managing Partner of TUSK Capital Russia LLC (Moscow) and Chairman of TUSK Holding(Switzerland). He set up TUSK Capital Management after having left Investec Bank (UK), prior to which he worked at AIG and Rand Merchant Bank. He has over 18 years of experience in trading, derivatives structuring and financial engineering having worked at various positions. He is a frequent participant at forums and summits related to finding sustainable solutions to a low carbon economy and a regular commentator on emerging markets.
Andrew has a BCom Degree (Honors) in Finance from Wits University (South Africa). He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a regular member of
the UK Society of Investment Professionals (UKSIP). He holds an MBA Degree from the University of Chicago-Booth School of Business. Andrew is also Co-Chair of Chicago Booth's Sustainability Roundtable.
Rodney Schwartz (Speaker)
CEO, ClearlySo
Rodney Schwartz is the CEO of ClearlySo (www.clearlyso.com). ClearlySo is the largest marketplace in Europe for social business & enterprise, commerce and investment. It has over 1600 social businesses and enterprises from over 40 countries listed on the site, providing these organisations with access to capital from investors, access to services and access to information these social entrepreneurs need to be successful. ClearlySo is a social business itself, with a physical presence in Toronto, Canada, and has recently announced its intention to expand into India in 2011.
Rodney began his career with PaineWebber (1980), Lehman Brothers (1988) and Paribas (1994) where he held senior positions in the strategy, equity and investment banking areas. He then co-founded Catalyst Fund Management & Research in 1997, originally a conventional venture capital and advisory firm (www.catfund.com), which is now focused on investing in and advising profitable social businesses in “ethical consumerism”, health, education, energy efficiency & the environment. ClearlySo was spun out from Catalyst and launched at the Skoll World Forum in March 2009.
ClearlySo has, since 2006, also hosted an annual autumn conference for social businesses and selected investors and sponsors the “ClearlySo in...” series of trips to study and learn from social enterprises and businesses around the world. ClearlySo also maintains the widely-read "Social Business Blog" and staff regularly lecture at leading business schools (Rod has lectured at the Said Business School (Oxford), LBS and IESE) and participate in third party produced reports on social business and social enterprise, with a focus on the practical business and investment side. ClearlySo and its staff are regular writers for Social Edge, Third Sector Magazine, and Social Enterprise Magazine and have written features for the Guardian.
Andy Wales, (Speaker)
Global Head of Sustainable Development, SABMiller plc
Andy Wales is Global Head of Sustainable Development for SABMiller plc (www.sabmiller.com), one of the world’s largest brewers. He leads the group's approach to prioritising economic, social and environmental issues within the group’s strategies and business plans, including risks such as water scarcity and opportunities such as promoting local economic growth through smallholder farming. He also leads stakeholder engagement for the group.
Previously Andy held Corporate Responsibility Director roles at the environmental services group Severn Trent, and textiles firm Interface, Inc.
He holds an MBA from Warwick Business School, a masters degree in Sustainable Development Strategy from Middlesex University and a BA in English and International Development from Sussex University.
In 2009 he was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In 2010 he was appointed a London Sustainable Development Commissioner. He is Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and of Forum for the Future. He is lead author of the book ‘Big Business, Big Responsibilities’, published in 2010 by Palgrave Macmillan (www.bigresponsibilities.org). His favourite beers include Peroni from Italy, Royal Challenge from India and Miller Chill from the United States.
Zubaria Lone, '09 (EXP-14) (Moderator)
Founder, SMS3
Zubaria Lone is founder of SMS3. SMS3 inspires people to make sense of sustainability. This is done through consulting, working in-house or assisting start-up businesses and social enterprises.
Zubaria has 18 years of experience in business sustainability. She has operated in consulting, in industry and in her own company. She has worked for Cortex/Courtaulds Engineering, Aspinwalls, Ernst&Young and France Telecom/Orange where she ran a group-wide practice across 16 countries. Zubaria has advised companies in oil and gas, chemical, manufacturing, financial services, textiles, food, music, telecommunications and technology turnaround enterprises. She has helped over 50 well known clients in 16 sectors. She has represented multi nationals, at an industry level, in work with the European Commission and in global negotiations under a United Nations framework. Zubaria has contributed to numerous corporate sustainability reports, authored a white paper on used and surplus mobile phones and prepared a Business in the Community guide for FTSE 350 companies on measuring environmental performance.
Zubaria has a BEng(Hons) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Teesside. She holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. Zubaria is also Co-Chair of Chicago Booth's Sustainability Roundtable.
