Event Details

Despite Germany having become Europe's economic champion and a greater diplomatic power, particularly in the Ukraine crisis, the German government's focus on delivering a balanced budget and voters' aversion to the use of force means German leaders have little incentive to increase military spending even in the face of calls from Western allies to beef up its military capabilities and mounting evidence that the German military is falling into disrepair.

Is all of this a consequence of the lack of a discourse about what Germany's increased role after reunification really means? Does it show the limits of promises by Germany's leaders that it will assume more responsibility in world affairs? Why do German leaders and voters tend to equate low military spending with a higher degree of civilization?

Plan now to attend a provocative evening of engagement on the future of Germany, NATO, and the European Union by Consul General Quelle.
