What's the Best Way to Decide Who Stays Out of Prison?

In the United States, the challenge of reducing criminal recidivism is substantial. Incarceration-diversion programs can help steer people away from prison and toward resources that can keep them from reoffending—but such programs have limited resources, and therefore face a choice of who to admit. Should that be left to human expertise, or algorithmic efficiency? Research from Chicago Booth PhD student Zhiqiang Zhang, Purdue’s Pengyi Shi, and Chicago Booth’s Amy Ward suggests both have a role in the optimal decision-making approach.
