The Chicago Approach: Giving rise to leaders with enduring impact in the world

  • Changing the Appetites of Millions of Consumers

    Matt Maloney, ’10, CEO, GrubHub

“We were solving a problem, but we weren’t building a business,” he recalls. “Booth showed me how to build a business.”

Each year, Americans spend $70 billion on takeout food, yet fewer than 5 percent of those orders are made via desktop and mobile. In 2004, Matt Maloney suspected that there was a future in persuading consumers to ditch their paper menus. A decade later, Maloney led GrubHub through an IPO and heads a growing $100 million company.

  • When Maloney set out to build GrubHub, there was no blueprint. Restaurant owners were discouraging. They had been sold on creating clunky internet sites during the first tech boom, and got burned. Even when restaurants signed on, what was the right formula for making their investment in GrubHub pay off?

Use of data enabled GrubHub to develop its two-sided model. As the start-up signed up more customers, the online model was more attractive to restaurants. As GrubHub added more restaurants, the service became more valuable for consumers.

  • “I come from a strong data background, and we understand what the favorite dishes are in every neighborhood across the country,” Maloney says. GrubHub identifies which consumers in a particular neighborhood are ordering particular dishes or a particular type of cuisine from restaurants at a particular time of day, which enables highly targeted marketing.

GrubHub prides itself on a culture of impassioned, intelligent, and respectful debate. Maloney likes to say that staff members argue with him every day, which is healthy. Much like the collaborative culture of Chicago Booth, “There are no sacred cows in the culture that we built,” Maloney says. “Good ideas bubble up from throughout the organization, whether from newcomers or senior-level executives. Everybody has a platform, and everybody is listened to.”

“I put a lot of what I learned at Booth to the test. If you rigorously deconstruct a problem and then use the fundamentals to make structural decisions, you can be very creative about how you move forward.”
