The Chicago Approach: Giving rise to leaders with enduring impact in the world

  • Staying Ahead of the Curve

Banks Baker, '05, Head of Publisher Solutions & Innovations, Asia Pacific, Google

“I really put a lot of what I learned at Booth to the test. If you rigorously deconstruct a problem and then use the fundamentals to make financial or structural decisions, you can be very creative about how you move forward.”

At Google, Baker's team is joining with leading content and service providers across Asia and the Pacific to help them maximize the profitability of their digital advertising businesses.

  • His clients are across the spectrum from mobile application developers and digital content pure-plays, to social media companies and longstanding, traditional print and broadcast news enterprises.

As global Internet accessibility grows and consumers continue to choose an ever-expanding collection of devices to engage with digital content, the models for how to create, distribute, and monetize content will progress and shift. "We are constantly having to change and evolve, and then work with our partners who are also working to navigate these new paradigms," he says. "That's exciting."

  • At a company such as Google, where change is a constant, leaders must admit that they don't have all the answers, Baker says. "By readily seeking resources and information, inside and outside your organization, to help inform decisions;  you become more valuable as a leader, you become more valuable as a team member, and you can more rapidly move to a conclusion or action."
