Amy -> EveryoneThanks for joining us today. I look forward to answering your questions.
Carrie -> EveryoneWelcome! Thanks for joining us today and we look forward to answering your questions!
Tyler -> EveryoneHello everyone and thank you for joining us today! I look forward to answering your questions.
Meghan -> EveryoneHi everyone! Thanks for joining us today. Looking forward to your questions.
AC -> CarrieHi! I am really looking forward to applying to Booth during Round 2 of Admissions. I am interested in learning more about the balance between classes that are structured as lectures versus cases versus experiential learning. I was also hoping to learn more about opportunities available though the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship.
Carrie -> ACHi, AC! We allow our faculty to select the teaching method they feel is most appropriate for their class, so you will likely have a mix of methods. When selecting classes, you will be able to see what type of method is utilized and can choose to have a variety of methods or take classes utilizing a specific type of method. In terms of the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, there are a host of opportunities, classes and competitions available. You can read more here: http://research.chicagobooth.edu/polsky/.
fernando.dolores -> Kylie WHello I´m planning to apply to Booth this year , how many rounds there are?
Kylie W -> fernando.doloresHi Fernando, there are three rounds for admission to the Full-Time program. Although the round one deadline has already passed, you can find the deadlines for rounds two and three here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions
CBL -> EddieDear Admissions Committee, for a student who took a gap year after undergrad what kind of activities do you look for in their application?
Eddie -> CBLHi CBL. We just want your honest account of what you were doing. There isn't anything that we are specifically looking for.
KentonThornton -> TylerDo you accept GMAT/GRE submitted scores after the Round 2 deadline? I have recently decided to retake in an effort to maximize my results. Also do you consider one test greater than the other?
Tyler -> KentonThorntonHi Kenton, the day of the application deadline is the last possible day you can take the GMAT or GRE. So for Round 2 you will need to take it by 1/6/2015 so you can submit a self-reported score.
DC -> EddieGreetings from sunny soCal! Thanks so much for hosting this chat session...as my first question, I wanted to find out a little bit more about the presentation vs. essay debate. Which format is suited for whom.
Eddie -> DCHi DC. The choice is up to you. Either one is fine and we're hoping to get a better "snapshot" of who you are and your interests.
Brenda -> MeghanI have a Bachelor's degree from a university in Hong Kong. The courses were instructed in English. Can I be exempt from TOEFL exam? Thank you.
Meghan -> BrendaHi Brenda, if English was the primary language of instruction at your university, you are exempt from providing TOEFL scores. Read more here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/international/english-exams
Marie -> TylerHi, I'm graduated from the English section of faculty of commerce- Cairo University. The English was the sole language of instruction. I want to make sure that I'm exempted from the TOEFL exam.
Tyler -> MarieHi Marie, if English is the primary language of instruction at your undergraduate you do not need to take the TOEFL.
Shaif -> CarrieHow many years of experience is ideal for a regular MBA program?
Carrie -> ShaifHi, Shaif! We have no minimum or maximum years of work experience required, but most students have between 3-5 years of work experience.
Marie -> CarrieCan I add photos to my essay?
Carrie -> MarieHi, Marie. You are welcome to include photos in your essay or presentation - we leave the design up to you!
CBL -> EddieMr. Pulliam how does the college identify recruitment initiatives for underrepresented minorities?
Eddie -> CBLWell, CBL. Your industry will guide you to the right recruiting opportunities. Our career counselors will help you understand what the companies are looking for in the candidates they will eventually meet.
KentonThornton -> AmyFor an applicant with a non traditional background (hospitality management), what are some traits you would like to see highlighted in the application?
Amy -> KentonThorntonHi KentonThornton, rest assured that at Booth, we absolutely foster a diverse community. So when we evaluate candidates, we are looking for fit. We would look to you to share a holistic story within your application that demonstrates your fit with Booth. Feel free to check out the criteria section on our website (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/apply/criteria) and to connect with our current students via our student groups to better understand your fit with our community (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/).
Oscar -> Tyler3. What are the most important aspects of a prospect student´s profile you evaluate when going through the admission process, besides GMAT scores?
Tyler -> OscarAll components of the application are important for a final holistic evaluation.
Hila -> CarrieDo dual citizens sign apply as international students or with SSN?
Carrie -> HilaHi, Hila. Dual citizens should report both citizenships within the application. If dual US and another country, you will be considered a US citizen for visa purposes.
TimMullen -> Kylie WMy application is well underway with just a few elements requiring further refinement. I was wondering though as I cant seem to find an obvious calendar online, when the program and its orientation period all starts for real? It may be quite an obvious question to anyone living or studying in the states already but with varying semester lengths across schools, over here in Australia I cant seem to determine the program start date for the current round of application submissions. Just hoping to plan with my current employers the most beneficial itinerary dates for the big move. Otherwise both the website and the emails have been ever so useful in helping make this difficult decision seem a lot less complex. I thank you all for that and for making yourselves available for this question time and hope to soon speak to some of you in the near future.
Kylie W -> TimMullenHi Tim, thanks for joining our chat today! Orientation+ typically begins in early September with 3 weeks of LEAD, and the first week of classes beyond LEAD begin at the end of September. Orientation+ programming is mandatory, so to answer your question in short, first years begin the full-time program in the beginning of September.
Oscar -> Meghan1. What are the key aspects that booth offers the MBA student in order to develop their leadrship skills? follow up: What extracurricular activities (student programs, labs, etc) does the MBA program offer to develop theese skills?
Meghan -> OscarHi Oscar: Great question. All Booth students begin their experience by taking LEAD, a co-horted Leadership Development class that primes you for the rest of your Booth experience and beyond. From there, students focus on what resonates most with them; they may choose to lead a student group, or participate in a business competition. Read more about LEAD here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/lead
RSchaub -> EddieTo what extent are we able to tailor our education? I have a unique background in advertising in the healthcare/biotech/pharma industries and would somehow like to incorporate advertising, marketing and healthcare into my education. My ultimate post-MBA goal is to work in brand management on the client side. Thanks!
Eddie -> RSchaubHey RSchaub. With our flexible curriculum you'll be able to choose the courses that are specific to the industry you desire. The support you'll get from the career and academic counselors will add so much to your experience here at Booth.
Enrique_P -> CarrieOnce granted an interview, where are the interviews conducted? can they be conducted in the major cities in the US and Europe?
Carrie -> Enrique_PHi, Enrique! Interviews take place here on campus with our Admissions Fellows (second-year students), at one of our interview days throughout the world, or with one of our alumni interviews in your city.
Alejandro -> TylerHello admissions team!! I have a question regarding GMAT score reporting. I have already taken the test and had my scores sent over to Booth, however, I want to take it again and next available date is as early as January 2. Could I report this unofficial score on my application in case it was higher, and make a note that you should expect official scores after the deadline??? Thanks for your time!!
Tyler -> AlejandroYes, you will be able to report this score for Round 2 as long as it is taken before the 1/6/2015 deadline.
Mars_GPS -> CarrieGood morning, if I had my interview on Campus should something change in my application status? Thank you!
Carrie -> Mars_GPSCongrats on your interview, Mars_GPS! Nothing will change with your status until we release our final decision on December 18th.
CesarAM -> TylerQuestion. I just enrolled in a GMAT prep course. It will be ending a few days after the 2nd round deadline. I could take the gmat before then with SOME preparation or wait to apply for the 3rd round with the prep course under my belt. Which gives me the best chances of getting in?
Tyler -> CesarAMThere is no disadvantage to applying in any of the rounds. I suggest applying when you are ready.
Loper -> AmyHello...I am interested in applying during Round 3. What is the percentage of students that are accepted during that Round versus Round 2? It is my understanding that most applicants apply during Round 2.
Amy -> LoperHi Loper, we always encourage prospective students to apply when they feel like their application is at its best, so that it's the best representation of you. Certainly, the admissions process does get more competitive during round 3, as many seats have been filled. Proportionately, we do receive the most number of applications in round 2. However, keep in mind that regardless of which round you choose to apply, the Admissions Committee is always looking for candidates who are the best fit.
Karen -> MeghanDear admission, my GMAT exam is scheduled next month. If I feel that I may want to take another exam, will you accept another score concerning the round 2 deadline? Thank you.
Meghan -> KarenHi Karen: Yes, we will accept updated GMAT scores after the Round 2 deadline. However, consideration depends on the timing of when you submit it.
Kunal -> EddieHi All! Just a quick simple question, how easy or difficult it is for a International Student ( I am from India & I know you would have answered this questions n times!) to get scholarships and what could the maximum waiver from Tuition fees..yeah is it more need based or merit based?..
Eddie -> KunalAll students are considered for our scholarships Kunal. It's a merit based selection so the strength of your application plays an important part when we are considering our candidates for our awards.
CBL -> CarrieHow does the admission process differ for a student applying to a dual program?
Carrie -> CBLHi, CBL. All of our joint degree programs require separate applications with the respective schools, with the exception of our joint MBA/MA program in International Relations/Area Studies. For that program, you apply to the Full-Time program and submit the supplemental materials required. For more information, please consult: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/joint-degree
Shaif -> Meghan2) If someone has a two years undergrad and two years grad - can they apply to your program?
Meghan -> ShaifHi Sharif: We seek a completed bachelor's degree. Read more about our criteria here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/apply/criteria
Ed_Luggen -> EddieI wanted to ask about letters of recommendation. Does the adcom prefer the two letters come from varied sources, e.g., one current employer and a past employer, one current and a co-worker, current/teacher, or would two current employers be preferable?
Eddie -> Ed_LuggenHey Ed. It's really up to you. We do like to get at least one from an employer when possible. Your 2nd choice should be from a person who can give a good description of you as a professional, colleague, team member, etc.
rahulm9 -> Kylie WHi I'm planning to apply in R2 and my question is that how does booth look at applicants who come from relatively unknown firms? a firm that no one on the admissions team would have heard of. How/where does one make the admissions team aware about the firm in general and more specifically regarding the hierarchical structure, revenues, etc of the firm
Kylie W -> rahulm9Hi there, rahulm9. The admissions team is mostly concerned with how you frame your professional experience and your growth within and beyond that firm; not with the firm name. If you feel that your firm merits an explanation within your application, please feel free to include that.
Casey -> AmyDo you typically admit many students who come straight from an Undergraduate program?
Amy -> CaseyHi Casey, while we have admitted students who have had minimal work experience, we have found that our students benefit (and contribute) most to the MBA community having had some work experience. Please feel free to learn more on our website (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/).
Nipun -> CarrieIn terms of decision notifications, will all decisions be emailed on only 18th December, or is there a chance that decisions are sent out before that date as well?
Carrie -> NipunHi, Nipun. We release all decisions via our online application system at 9am CST on December 18th. You will receive an email letting you know your status has changed, and can log in to see it then.
Ravi -> MeghanDo continuing education courses in economics, finance help the application , esp for engineering applicants.
Meghan -> RaviHi Ravi: It's great to see that you've explored those areas prior to applying to business school, especially if they are new subjects for you but it's not required. If anything, familiarity with economics and finance might help you feel more prepared and confident to enter an MBA program.
harshal -> Kylie WHi, good morning. I'd like to know when are the applications available and by when do we get an interview call - for R2 this year and R1 next year.
Kylie W -> harshalHi Harshal, you can find deadlines for the 2014-2015 application here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions
hcaldwell -> EddieHi! I understand that interviews are invite only. What is the process for being selected for an interview and are they usually on campus or can they take place in your current city?
Eddie -> hcaldwellWe'll look at your application first and review it. Then we'll send out invitations for those candidates we feel we would like to meet based on the quality of their applications. At that time you can choose where you would like to have the interview conducted, here on campus or with one of our alumni in your city/country.
SK -> TylerThis may be too general of a question, but what specifically do you think makes an applicant stand out above all other applicants? Is there one quality, or a set of qualities, you value more than others or would be the best fit for Booth?
Tyler -> SKHi SK, the Chicago Booth evaluation process is a holistic evaluation. Our applicants and students embody a variety of different traits and qualities that set them apart. You can check out our evaluation criteria on our website through this link. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/apply/criteria
Hilary -> CarrieWhat are some of the characteristics of the most successful or memorable admissions essays (or presentations) you have received?
Carrie -> HilaryGreat question, Hilary! We see a wide variety of successful essays, so it's hard to pull a few out. However, those that stand out are typically those where the applicant is genuine, has taken risks with what she decides to share, and where we have the opportunity to get to know her better!
Kin_Poon -> AmyI have a official campus visit scheduled for this Friday. I know some events are pre-planned. How do you think I can make the best use of my time during the campus visit?
Amy -> Kin_PoonHi Kin_Poon, the Campus Visit Program is designed for you to get to know our community, and we encourage you to make the most out of your time by participating in as many of the activities as possible (i.e. class visit, information session, lunch, and building tour). You will meet student volunteers who are eager to share their experiences with you, so be sure to leverage their insight and ask any and all questions that you might have about our community. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to connect with the walk-in Admissions director. Please feel free to refer to our website for more information about the program (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/visit/daily-campus-visit-program).
Emtiaz -> MeghanHi - thanks for hosting this session! Based on your interactions with students, what would you say they love the most about Booth?
Meghan -> EmtiazHi Emtiaz: Great question. I hear students talk a lot about the incredible faculty they have access to at Booth, as well as the power of the network. There is a real "pay it forward" culture at Booth, amongst the students and alumni. For more of a sense on what our students enjoy about the community, please follow their blog at: http://theboothexp.com/
Oscar -> Kylie W2. Regarding Innovation and Innovation Management, is there any specific part of the optional curriculum that an MBA student can choose to further learn and develop skills in these fields?
Kylie W -> OscarHi Oscar, if you are interested in opportunities in Innovation, I encourage you to check out the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation: http://research.chicagobooth.edu/polsky/
Full-Time students also have the opportunity to take 11 electives, including 6 courses outside of Booth at multiple schools within the University of Chicago.
CBL -> CarrieCarrie, do most students have professional work experience as part of their 3-5 work experience? In other words what is considered work experience by the college?
Carrie -> CBLHi, CBL. Most applicants come in with 3-5 years of professional experience, which includes full-time work experience but occasionally can include internship experience.
Ali -> CarrieHello - thanks for hosting this chat. My questions is what kind of insight is the admission committee looking to gain from the interviews?
Carrie -> AliHi, Ali. The interview helps us to understand who you are in person vs the application. The entire process helps us to better understand whether an applicant will "fit" with our culture, and the interview provides a dynamic opportunity to do so.
CesarAM -> CarrieHow long after 2nd round deadline am i able to submit the GMAT score?
Carrie -> CesarAMHi, CesarAM. You will need to have taken the GMAT by the time you submit your application. We do not need the official score at that time, but will need your self-reported score.
ssarma -> EddieAlso I was wondering if perhaps you could shed some light on the housing situation for incoming Booth students - is there an opportunity for them to live in on-campus housing?
Eddie -> ssarmaHi Ssarma. If you are admitted during our Admit Weekends we hold information sessions where you can learn about the choices that are offered. We'll offer tours so that you can see specific neighborhoods in Chicago and get advice from currents students and what they like about the city.
Enrique -> MeghanHi Meghan, can you elaborate a little bit about the flexible Curriculum at Booth?
Meghan -> EnriqueHi Enrique: Sure, happy to. The flexible curriculum allows students to design an MBA curriculum that fits their specific needs. One of the benefits to that is that students can begin taking classes from day one that prepare them to enter a new role, or industry. Read more here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/curriculum
Curious_Georgia -> Kylie WAs for awards and recognition, is it okay to list awards that an organization received, while the candidate was the President of that organization?
Kylie W -> Curious_GeorgiaHi Curious_Georgia, please feel free to list any awards that speak to your experience, or your participation on a team that received those awards.
sn004 -> AmyHi, thank you for hosting this session. I am planning to apply to R2. I want to know about international exchange opportunities at Booth.
Amy -> sn004Hi sn004, yes absolutely. Here are few opportunities for you to consider: (1) We offer an international MBA (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/international-studies/imba); (2) the International Business Exchange Program (IBEP) (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/international-studies/ibep); (3) many of our regionally/culturally focused student groups lead career and cultural treks during the year. You can reach out to those respective groups and learn more (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/).
SethK -> TylerSoCal here also. If I were to submit a R2 app in December, should I expect to hear about the interview earlier than the candidates applying on the deadline? Also, do you release the decisions on 3/26 all at once or some applicants get them earlier?
Tyler -> SethKNo, you would not receive and invitation to interview based on when you submit. Following the 1/6/2015 deadline the admissions committee begins evaluating and beginning in late January we will release interview invitations randomly. All applicants who were interviewed will receive a final decision of Deny or Admit on 3/26/2015.
fernando.dolores -> EddieHow many years of experience is required for the full time MBA?
Eddie -> fernando.doloresHi Fernando. We don't have a work requirement. On average most students have about 5 years of work experience before they start.
rahulm9 -> AmyDo the letter of recommendation also need to be submitted by the 6th of jan for R2 applicants?
Amy -> rahulm9Hi rahulm9, yes, we do expect that all of the required materials be submitted by the deadline. Should you anticipate any issues, please contact us at admissions@chicagobooth.edu or call us at 773.702.7369.
Alonso1 -> CarrieHi Admission team! I have a question regarding financial aid, specifically in the merit-based awards. I understand that Chicago Booth offers top candidates merit-based awards at the time of admission. How does Chicago Booth define what a "top candidate" is??
Carrie -> Alonso1Hi Alonso. For merit-based awards, we are looking to identify the most qualified candidates in the pool across all dimensions. The criteria are generally the same as those for overall admission, which reflect the unique culture at Chicago Booth.
Christian -> Kylie WHello - how much importance does admissions place on visiting Booth. I want to try my best to come visit but these next few weeks are very busy for me and I do not know if I can make it - will that hurt my application?
Kylie W -> ChristianHi Christian, campus visits are for your benefit as a candidate to better get to know the Booth community and determine your own fit within the school. It's also a great opportunity to get to know current students. We offer several options for campus visit days (typically Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week). If you can't get to campus and want to connect with current students, feel free to email co-chairs of our student groups: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/
Alejandro -> EddieHello again guys! I´m applying on round 2 and I am really excited about a campus visit which I can only manage after the January deadline. Do you have a detailed schedule for full visits? How could I schedule one? Thanks again for your time!!!
Eddie -> AlejandroHi Alejandro. You can check our website for the visit dates in January. They haven't been posted yet but if you check towards the end of December we should have better information at that time..
Casey -> CarrieIs there a time period we would have to wait to reapply if we did not get accepted the first time we applied?
Carrie -> CaseyHi, Casey. The only requirement around reapplication is that you apply in a different application year than your initial application.
CH_Bang -> MeghanHi!, I am wondering how booth offers experiential learning opportunities in Entrepreneurship field.
Meghan -> CH_BangHi CH_Bang: We absolutely do - the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship coordinates a host of lab courses, competitions and entrepreneurship opportunities where students can "learn by doing." Check out their offerings here: http://research.chicagobooth.edu/polsky/
Ed_Luggen -> TylerWhen applying, I understand an "unofficial" transcript is acceptable if and until the applicant is expected, then an official transcript is required. My question is, how official must an unofficial transcript be? Can i submit a world document copy-pasted from my school's website, or does it need to be an actual transcript in my possession scanned and submitted?
Tyler -> Ed_LuggenHi Ed_Luggen, we need something that came directly from the university. That could be an online registration system or photocopies of the transcripts.
Zubey -> Kylie WWhat global experience programs are available at booth?
Kylie W -> ZubeyHi Zubey, you can find several opportunities for globalizing the Booth MBA here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/international-studies
AndresQuito -> TylerHi, how long after submitting application will booth start sending interview invitations? And in case for re-applicants is there another interview if previously interviewed or just a decision?
Tyler -> AndresQuitoWe will begin releasing interview invitations in January for Round 2. As a reapplicant you will have to do another interview.
BhuvneshPratap -> AmyHi everyone! A quick question - is there a particular preference for essay format? Is a presentation preferred over a standard letter?
Amy -> BhuvneshPratapHi BhuvneshPratap, please feel free to choose the format that works best for you. We care most about the value of the content that you're sharing with us.
Slbojanini -> TylerThe application form states that you only need unverified test scores at the time of application, so when should I send the official scores reports to you if I'm applying to round 2?
Tyler -> SlbojaniniOfficial scores are only needed if admitted into the program.
Arvind -> MeghanGreetings! What would your advice be to students who are currently running their startups on presenting their goals especially as gets difficult to differentiate between the business goals and the individual's career goals?
Meghan -> ArvindHi Arvind: We see many applications from candidates who are working on their own businesses or in startups and recognize that their paths may not be as straightforward as others. Just be honest, genuine and passionate about what you want to accomplish, and how business school will help you to meet that goal.
Matt_Pekins -> CarrieThank you for hosting this chat session. I recently visited campus and attended a class, info session, and lunch with current students. If I'm interested in connecting with additional current students with similar interests to mine, is there an avenue to do that?
Carrie -> Matt_PekinsGlad to hear that you were able to visit campus, Matt! We definitely encourage you to continue the conversation, and you can do that in a variety of ways. To reach out to specific students, I would suggest identifying the various student groups that you are interested in and reaching out to their co-chairs. You can find a list of groups with student contact information here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups. Also, I'd encourage you to follow The Booth Experience blog, which is run by current students: http://theboothexp.com
Danny -> TylerHi, I am planning to applying to Booth in Round 2 of admissions. For the letters of recommendation are 2 professional letters accepted or do I need to get 1 academic and 1 professional?
Tyler -> Danny1 needs to come from your direct supervisor. The other is at your discretion. Keep in mind that we are looking for recommenders to provide valuable feedback on your candidacy. If you are far removed from a previous job or school, the information they provide might not be relevant.
Shiva -> Kylie WHi, thanks for hosting the chat session. I just wanted to reach out and understand more about the Social Impact initiatives at Booth. Are students provided opportunities to work with social enterprises based in developing nations? The Social Entrepreneurship Lab (from the website atleast) seems to mostly be focused on local organizations
Kylie W -> ShivaHi Shiva, the Social Enterprise Initiative is an excellent resource for students to take their social impact interests in any direction they choose. While Chicago is an excellent place to get involved in local initiatives, SEI makes it a point to meet students where they are both in industry and social impact interest. I strongly encourage you to reach out to the co-chairs of the Net Impact Group. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/net-impact
AmitBedi -> TylerDo you have any advice for reapplicants? I know showing growth is important but was wondering if there were any other tips!
Tyler -> AmitBediHi AmitBedi, I would really recommend checking out our reapplicant page on our website. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/apply/reapplicants
AMO -> Kylie WI will be 36 at my desired time of enrollment. What is the average age of student?
Kylie W -> AMOHi AMO, the average age of the Class of 2016 is 27.7 years old.
Kylie W -> EveryoneWe have reached the half-way point of our chat today. Please continue to ask us your questions.
AMO -> Kylie WDo you recommend one test, GMAT or GRE, over another?
Kylie W -> AMOHi AMO, we accept both the GMAT and the GRE and do not prefer one over the other. Thanks!
DianaMMota -> MeghanHI! Regarding a Marketing path, can you elaborate a little bit about the Kilts Center at Booth? How can MBA students benefit from it?
Meghan -> DianaMMotaHi DianaMMota: Sure - the Kilts Center serves as the research base for faculty who are working in marketing fields and facilitates a number of opportunities for students who wish to further their knowledge in that field. They offer marketing fellowships, mentoring with alumni, and case competitions in addition to other sources of support. Learn more here: http://research.chicagobooth.edu/kilts
Harry12 -> CarrieI was unable to attend the information sessions as i was travelling. Consequently i was planning to visit the campus to know more the school and life at Booth. Till when can i visit the campus before the holiday season begins in December? Would help me in planning my travel. Thanks
Carrie -> Harry12We'd love to have you visit campus, Harry12! Our full-program campus visit experience runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through December 5th. After that, we offer a shortened visit program on Mondays and Fridays from December 8th - January 9th. You can find out more and register here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/visit/daily-campus-visit-program
Nipun -> TylerDo notifications for awards of fellowships and merit scholarships go out at the same time as the overall decision notification? What do you look for when thinking about who will be awarded The Distinguished Fellows Program
Tyler -> NipunHi Nipun, students are awarded scholarships upon admissions. However, this does not mean there isn't a chance for scholarship later on though. You can read more about how scholarship and fellowship decisions are made on our website. http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/scholarships
Caroline -> AmyHow does the program help us to find mentors for the specific career path we are interested in?
Amy -> CarolineHi Caroline, given the collaborative nature of the Booth community, there are many formal and informal opportunities to seek mentors. Specifically, first-year students are assigned a second-year mentor before they start classes. Informally, admitted students are immediately connected with current students. Depending on your interests, the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Kilts Center for Marketing, and Social Enterprise Initiative are also great resources for our students who are pursuing respective careers in those areas, including connecting them with alumni mentors.
At Booth, connections are made and networks are developed rather organically, so our students are always encouraged to seek resources that would be helpful in their development.
Joe -> Kylie WIf I take GMAT two times and 2nd score is lower than 1st score - do you consider the highest score out of all attempts or the latest score?
Kylie W -> JoeHi Joe, we accept the highest score out of all GMAT or GRE attempts.
Ta10014 -> MeghanI've heard Booth has a reputation for developing candidates for 'quant' roles in finance. Is this an accurate assessment, or more of a misconception?
Meghan -> Ta10014Hi Ta10014: It's true that we have a great reputation for preparing graduates to work in finance, but also in a number of other diverse fields. Check out our employment report to see where our students work: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/employmentreport/
Sid_RB -> CarrieThanks for this very informative session. I would like to know what percentage of applicants are extended an interview call ?
Carrie -> Sid_RBHi Sid_RB. The percentage of applicants interviewed varies from round to round, but generally is between 40-60%.
dlmm -> CarrieHello everyone! I have already applied and already had my interview (very happy about this!), but now I need to update some details about my application. I should just send an email explaining the update and my reasons or how should I explain an important change? Thank you very much for your answer!
Carrie -> dlmmCongrats on your interview, dlmm! You can send in your update to admissions@chicagobooth.edu and we will make sure it gets added to your file.
xiaoliangshell -> TylerIf want to apply for scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship for my MBA study, should I apply for them after I get admitted by the school?
Tyler -> xiaoliangshellAll Chicago Booth scholarships and fellowships have no application process. These are awarded upon admission based on the merit of your application. There are a variety of other outside scholarships available for application and assistantships are chosen by faculty on their terms.
MandyS -> Kylie WDo you also host off-campus events/ information sessions that international candidates may attend?
Kylie W -> MandySHi MandyS, the admissions team is not currently traveling internationally for information sessions; however, I strongly encourage you to attend any of the events in the Chicago Conversations Series: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/conversations/event-schedule or Booth's Global Leadership series: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/GLS/
Kunal -> TylerHey! Sorry for repeating this again but I really need a clarity on this.. but will a new GMAT score trump over a old GMAT score ( the scores remaining the same). I gave mine in 2011..Thanks!
Tyler -> KunalWe take the highest GMAT score within the past 5 years of the deadline.
CBL -> MeghanWhat are our odds of fitting in if we don't have any business background?
Meghan -> CBLHi CBL: We enroll students from a great variety of backgrounds including education, government and sports and entertainment. I'd encourage you to have a look at our class profile for a better sense of this: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time#simple2
Abhi -> CarrieGood Morning! I applied in Round 1 and had my interview in India with an alumnus(thanks for the opportunity). My question is similar to the one Mars_GPS asked. I did not receive any acknowledgement from the School about whether my interview report has reached them. Should I expect any acknowledgment? Thanks in advance.
Carrie -> AbhiHi Abhi - congrats on your interview! You will not receive confirmation of the interview report, but should we have any concerns we would proactively reach out to you.
closier -> AmyHi team. Thanks so much for being available for this chat. I have a quick clarification question on the 'Academics' portion of the application. I took college courses in high school and during one summer in college at institutions from which I do not have a degree. To confirm, I should list them in the 'Institutions' section but I do not need an accompanying transcript?
Amy -> closierHi closier, if those courses are listed on your college transcript, there's no need to send an additional transcript. However, if that is not the case, please do send us the respective transcript(s). Either way, yes, please go ahead and list them in the Academics section.
Stephanie_Chen -> CarrieIf you are not selected after interview, will you be considered during the next round?
Carrie -> Stephanie_ChenHi Stephanie. After the interview, applicants will be admitted, denied, or waitlisted. If an applicant is waitlisted, she will be considered for admission in the next round.
RafaT -> TylerHello, and thank you for the chat. If 've already had an interview, what can I expect from now until admission decisions are released?
Tyler -> RafaTHi RafaT, at this point it's just a waiting game. Decisions will be released on December 18th at 9:00 AM CST.
Emtiaz -> MeghanHi - I did my undergrad at Duke and the one thing that always brought us all together was sports (Duke basketball). What is the main thing that you would say brings all Booth students together? (Not necessarily sports related)
Meghan -> EmtiazHi Emitaz: Booth students explore their passions through a number of different activities; groups, special events, treks and random walks to name a few. For a better sense of how our community comes together, please read the student blog at http://theboothexp.com/
MandyS -> TylerFor candidates whose native language is not English - In lieu of the TOEFL, do we need a certificate from the undergraduate university stating that the sole medium of instruction was English?
Tyler -> MandySHi MandyS, typically transcripts will identify if English is the primary language of instruction.
Casey -> TylerAre applicatants waitlisted in the 3rd round?
Tyler -> CaseyYes they are.
codekirk -> Kylie WHi! Thanks for having this chat session. I am in the military and currently deployed. I will have my application in for Round 2. If I am invited to interview, can that be done remotely, since I will not be stateside until mid March?
Kylie W -> codekirkHi codekirk, congratulations on making steps toward your Round 2 application! It is common for those in the military and currently deployed to be interviewed via skype or phone, if they request it.
Roberto_R -> CarrieThank you for doing this. What percentage of your MBA graduates stay in the chicago area versus those that go elsewhere? What percentage of the graduates go abroad after getting their Booth MBA?
Carrie -> Roberto_RHi Roberto. In 2013, just over 32% of students stayed in the Chicago area, and approximately 17% were working internationally after their MBA. You can read more about location and industry statistics here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/employmentreport/index.aspx
Jesse -> AmyThank you for the time. I would like to attend some Booth admission events in the future but I noticed that a lot, if not all, of the admission events are on a weekday. Will there be future events in the US that fall on a weekend?
Amy -> JesseHi Jesse, thanks for your interest. Please keep an eye on our events page (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/events) for upcoming student-hosted events, some of which may take place during the weekend. In the meantime, please feel free to connect with our students via our student groups (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/).
Alejandro -> MeghanAnother one guys. I am very into the LEAD program and specially a couple of Lab Courses. Do these interfere much with regular classes and assignments? Do they replace other mandatory courses and count as the needed credits for graduation?? Thanks a lot!
Meghan -> AlejandroHi Alejandro: Great question. It's true that lab courses often demand more time than your average course because of the commitments you have to the company and/or clients you are working with. However, you can work with an academic advisor to balance your schedule for that term and make sure you have ample time to participate. Lab courses count towards your degree just like any other course at Booth.
Phil -> Kylie WHi all - Just had one quick question. Are there any resources available for connecting with current students? I'm particularly interested in those pursuing a consumer finance track. Thank you!
Kylie W -> PhilHi Phil, check out our student experience blog: TheBoothExp.com. I encourage you to read their stories and reach out to The Booth Experience team with any questions. You can also reach out to co-chairs of any of our student groups: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/student-experience/beyond-classroom/groups/
atig -> Kylie WWhere can I find the list of employers recruiting at Chicago Booth for niche domains?
Kylie W -> atigHi atig, please find the employment report here: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/employmentreport/
Itamar_Zur -> MeghanHow's it like to be part of the Booth community? what makes it unique from your perspective?
Meghan -> Itamar_ZurHi Itamar_Zur: Chicago Booth is a unique community for its emphasis on intellectual curiosity and the broad network of support amongst our students, faculty, staff and alumni. But don't just take it from me - hear what our students have to say by visiting their blog at: http://theboothexp.com/
Doug_S -> TylerHi, I am looking to schedule a campus visit and am interested in attending a specific class. Is there a way to secure a spot in a specific class prior to arriving on campus the morning of the visit? Thanks!
Tyler -> Doug_SHi Doug, please reach out to admissions@chicagobooth.edu and they will give you details on what classes are offered on what days. All classes are on a first come first serve basis so arriving early will assure you a spot!
Oma -> CarrieI joined the chat late so I'm sorry if this question has been answere earlier. What weight does the interview carry in the admission process. Do you still review the entire application or just the results of the interview
Carrie -> OmaHi, Oma! We use the interview to gain a new perspective of you in person. After the interview, we use the interview report as well as the entire application to make a decision.
Joe -> Kylie WCan I apply to both full-time and part-time programs at the same time? How is it viewed and will there be two independent admission reviews or is there communication between full-time and part-time admissions?
Kylie W -> JoeHi Joe. It is not possible to apply to both the full-time and part-time program at the same time.
Aman_Mittal -> CarrieI wanted to understand the date ranges for interviews for R2, if a candidate is invited, given I have a pre-planned work-related travel in mid-February?
Carrie -> Aman_MittalHi, Aman_Mittal. Round 2 interview weeks run from February 9th through March 6th. You are welcome to interview on campus or wherever you are with one of our alumni.
Theo -> Kylie WIs it only applicants chosen for interviews are considered for admission?
Kylie W -> TheoHi Theo, applicants who do not receive an invitation to interview will not move on further in the admissions process.
Mars_GPS -> CarrieHello! After having the interview On Campus should the status in our application change? Thank you!
Carrie -> Mars_GPSHi Mars_GPS. Once the interview is completed, there will not be a status change until the final decision on December 18th.
Kylie W -> EveryoneHi everyone, there are 10 more minutes left in our chat today!
ssarma -> AmyHello - thank you for hosting this admissions chat. I was wondering if Booth students have the opportunity to take some classes outside of Booth during their tenure, such as in the law or medical school. Thank you in advance.
Amy -> ssarmaHi ssarma, yes, absolutely. The flexible curriculum at Booth allows our students to take up to six (of their 11) electives at any school/department outside of Booth and within the University. In fact, the Law School and Harris School of Public Policy are popular choices for our students to take their electives. Please feel free to learn more about our curriculum on our website (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/academics/curriculum).
Cristian_B. -> MeghanHello everyone. I've heard a lot of great things during my campus visit & interview about the Booth Career Services. At what time during the two years does the collaboration between the career services and the students start? I know the first few months in the first year are spent looking for summer internships. Are the career services involved in this process as well? Thank you!
Meghan -> Cristian_B.Hi Cristian_B: Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to campus! As a student at Booth, you begin interacting with our Career Services team right away. At Orientation you will participate in Industry Immersion, an event that will help you to target your recruiting strategy. From there it largely depends upon the industry you are recruiting for but trust that you will find abundant support from our coaches and career advisors along the way.
xiaoliangshell -> AmyHi, my question is: do most current full-time MBA also have the time and chance to work for an internship?
Amy -> xiaoliangshellHi xiaoliangshell, most of our students complete a summer internship. If you're asking about whether our students complete internships during the school year, it is not common, though some students do.
AirlineGuy -> Kylie WIs the optional essay only limited to extenuating circumstances, or is there scope to add something positive/meaningful?
Kylie W -> AirlineGuyHi AirlineGuy. If you you would like to address something in your application and you feel that that you were not able to address elsewhere, you can include it in your optional essay. If this is not the case, then you don't need to utilize the optional essay.
Blake -> CarrieHi admissions team. I am curious to learn what your team's review process is in the next few weeks now that all of the R1 interviews are wrapping up.
Carrie -> BlakeWe have a busy few weeks ahead of us, Blake! We are reviewing all applications again now that the interview reports are completed and will be convening as a committee to make final decisions.
Casey -> MeghanDo applicants who interview on campus have a better chance than those who interview with a alumi?
Meghan -> CaseyHi Casey: No; we extend the option to do either so you can choose which suits your schedule best. However, visiting campus is always a great way to get a better feel for the school.
hcaldwell -> EddieHi! I was planning on doing a class visit and tour sometime in towards the end of January. When will the schedule for Winter Campus visit program be posted?
Eddie -> hcaldwellYes. It will be posted by then. Say "Hello" when you visit,
Stephanie_Chen -> CarrieIf an applicant is waitlisted, when will they hear back on the decision? Are there additional steps?
Carrie -> Stephanie_ChenHi, Stephanie. Waitlisted applicants will be notified at the final decision of the the following round, and will be admitted, waitlisted, or denied at that time.
xiaoliangshell -> Kylie WHi, I want to apply in the second round, however, I am not from the US, I will back to my home country after I applied for the program. Would I still be able to get informed of an interview in another country if I am qualified?
Kylie W -> xiaoliangshellHi xiaoliangshell. There are many options for interviewing. You can find details here: http://blogs.chicagobooth.edu/blog/Booth_Insider/Invited_to_Interview__Congrats__Now_What/boothinsider/220?nav=entry
Slbojanini -> MeghanI guess you have lots of questions to answer right now, which one of you should I reach for further doubts regarding the application process and form?
Meghan -> SlbojaniniSlbojanini: No problem - you can always reach us at admissions@chicagobooth.edu. Good luck!
Kin_Poon -> AmyOn the day of my campus visit, may I attend both the morning class and the afternoon class?
Amy -> Kin_PoonHi Kin_Poon, given that we have a limited number of seats available for class visits, we ask that you attend one class session (and choose between morning or afternoon). For a better idea of the classes that will be offered on Friday, please feel free to check out our website (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/full-time/admissions/visit/class).
