Beth -> Everyone Thank you for joining us today! I'm Beth Daily, associate director and I'm available to answer your questions.
Moderator -> Everyone Hello everyone. Welcome to our live chat! Thank you for joining us today. We are eager to answer all your questions, so please begin submitting them now.
Krista -> Everyone Thanks for joining today's chat! I'm Krista McNamara, admissions manager at Booth. I'm looking forward to answering your questions; especially those regarding the application process, information sessions and class visits at Booth!
Katie -> Everyone Welcome to our Live Chat! This is Katie Coogan and I can answer questions on Chicago Business Fellows which is our program for those with less than 3 years of work experience or anything else!
Kara -> Everyone Greetings from Chicago Booth! Welcome to our first chat of 2014. I am Kara Northcutt, senior associate director of admissions. We look forward to answering your questions about Booth's Evening MBA, Weekend MBA and the application process.
Katie -> Everyone Welcome to our Live Chat! This is Katie Coogan and I can answer questions on Chicago Business Fellows which is our program for those with less than 3 years of work experience or anything else!
mahesh -> Beth Is the weekend program every other weekend or consecutive weekends?
Beth -> mahesh Mahesh, thanks for joining us today. The Weekend program holds class every Saturday from either 9am-noon and/or 1:30-4:30pm during the quarter, which is 10-11 weeks long.
Mathew -> Krista In terms of GMAT, do you focus on the overall score or you more interested in the math section. if interested in the overall score, what is the average mark. if interested in the math section, what percentile are you looking for
Krista -> Mathew Hi Matthew, thanks for your question! We focus on the overall GMAT score. While we do not have a minimum requirement, I can give you an average. The mid-80% of students coming into the program receive between a 620-750 on the GMAT. The average score is around a 680.
NP -> Krista Just a few questions to start... What is the typical class size for the Evening MBA Program?
Krista -> NP Hi NP - The class sizes vary depending on the quarter in which you apply. For the Autumn Evening program we usually see 150 and for the remaining quarters we have around 80 students.
Chris_Marshall -> Beth For the part time evening program, how many classes per semester would you consider to be manageable for most people?
Beth -> Chris_Marshall Chris, most of our students take two classes each quarter, finishing the degree in 2.5 years. We do offer course evaluations which will show you how much work outside of class to expect and you can use this to choose your courses. If you need or want to take more classes, you can certainly do this as well. I would highly recommend visiting a class. You can view our class visit options at http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/admissions/class-visit?source=modules_engage_eve
Mathew -> Kara Kindly confirm if you consider a Chartered Accountant (CA) or a Chartered Institute of Management Accountants CIMA- UK qualification as equivalent to an undergraduate degree
Kara -> Mathew Mathew, thank you for joining the chat! I would have to do some research. Is it an undergraduate degree in the UK? Please email me, kara.northcutt@chicagobooth.edu. It would help if you could email me copies of your transcripts.
Jeremy -> Beth Is it possible to complete the weekend program in 2 years?
Beth -> Jeremy Jeremy, yes, it is possible to complete the degree in 2 years, but you would need to take more than 2 classes during some of the program. If this works with your time schedule, then you can certainly finish quicker. We do ask, however, if you plan on taking more than four courses in a given quarter that you come in and speak with an academic advisor.
Brad -> Krista Thank you to the Booth employees for carrying on this informational chat. I was curious as to how the networking opportunities are for the evening program vs. the full-time program. Any insight would be helpful, thank you.
Krista -> Brad Hi Brad - Thanks for your questions! The networking opportunities are put on by either student-led groups and students are for the most part invited to attend events associated with either the full-time or part-time programs depending on their home program. Some groups tend to open up attendance for larger run events; however. Hope this helps!
Brad -> Krista Are the professors the same for full-time classes and part-time classes? Obviously Booth has some world renowned professors and is a large attraction to the programs.
Krista -> Brad Hi Brad - The classes in full-time and part-time are exactly the same. For example, a professor teaching Financial Accounting will have an evening section, a full-time section and a weekend section usually.
Neal -> Beth Hello- Right now I am applying to the evening MBA program, but there is a possibility that I will need to travel more for my job in the future. How difficult is it to sign up for weekend classes when you're in the evening MBA program? Also, what is the process for transferring into the weekend program?
Beth -> Neal Neal, you can easily elect to take weekend classes while in the Evening program. If you decide you would prefer to take weekend classes mainly because it works with your schedule better, you can do a one-time transfer between the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA program. You would just need to come into our office and complete a form.
Randy_Coker -> Katie If you've taken the GMAT twice and your score is 530, should you take it again or if the other parts of your admission are strong rely on those?
Katie -> Randy_Coker Hi Randy - The GMAT or GRE, whichever you choose, is an important part of the application. Our GMAT middle 80% range is 620 to 750. The average is 680-690. I recommend you take the GMAT again. The closer you get to the average, the better. If you are concerned about your GMAT score, the other parts can certainly help boost your application. Your undergraduate and any graduate transcripts can demonstrate academic ability and of course strong work experience always helps.
Lincoln -> Kara My understanding is that the admissions criteria for the Evening MBA program differs from that of the Full-time MBA program. Could you please describe the differences? Are there specific areas of an Evening applicant's profile that may be weighted more heavily than if that same applicant were applying for Full-time?
Kara -> Lincoln Lincoln, the applications are almost identical. Therefore, the criteria are basically the same. Each program looks at your academic history, test scores, professional background and future goals, as well are your community involvement. For the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA, we are looking for students who want to remain working full time while they earn an MBA. Full Time students seek to leave their current job to be a full time student in hopes of gaining a new job once they finish their MBA.
Jeremy -> Beth How much interaction do students have with the full time and executive students?
Beth -> Jeremy Jeremy, interaction between the Evening/Weekend students and Executive MBA students is fairly limited, no classes are taken together, but they will be around Gleacher Center and possibly at events. There is more interaction with the Full-Time students, as many of them choose to take classes at the Gleacher Center. You may also take classes down at Harper Center, should it work with your schedule.
SandraC -> Krista A previous Booth grad indicated that admissions focus on where students are coming from: i.e. admissions per zip code. Does this vary for out of state admittance on the weekend program vs. evening program (more Chicago based students)? I saw on the website 80% of the weekend program students are out of state.
Krista -> SandraC Hi Sandra - We focus on admitting a diverse student body here at Booth. You are correct, a large portion of Weekend students are not from Illinois and that helps to create a diverse community of students.
NP -> Katie What type of flexibility is given to Evening MBA students to take Full-Time classes when conducive?
Katie -> NP Hi NP - Students from the Evening, Weekend, and Full-Time programs can take classes across all three. You get first dibs on your home population, in your case this would be Evening. Then, in a later round of registration you can register for a class in Weekend or Full-Time. Students frequently take classes outside their home population which is great because it expands your Booth network.
Garrett_K -> Krista Do you suggest including extracurricular activities on the professional resume we submit with the application or leaving those entirely for the "activities" section of the online application?
Krista -> Garrett_K Hi Garrett, It's up to your discretion with this. We ask you to expand on your activities in the app so if you put it on your resume, no need to describe each one.
Jeremy -> Beth Are there any limitations regarding which classes are available for the weekend mba?
Beth -> Jeremy Most of the faculty and classes are available to Weekend students. Occasionally there are certain classes which are offered exclusively in the other programs, but for the most part you will be able to take the classes you want, when you want them. There are 150 different classes to choose from at Booth!
Nishant_Patel -> Kara For the evening program, the first essay focuses on short term and long term goals and how the evening program at Chicago would fit into that picture. Are you expecting the candidate to also answer why the goals are a good fit for them as well ?
Kara -> Nishant_Patel Nishant, we want to know your short term and long term career goals and how the Booth MBA will help you achieve such.
Sam -> Krista What kind of volunteer activities do you look for in candidates? Can they be unrelated to the intended study?
Krista -> Sam Hi Sam, Yes, they do not need to be professional/academic activities. We're hoping to learn more about you and what you spend your time doing outside of work. The volunteer activities should be purposeful; however. For example, we don't encourage applicants to go out and start volunteering just because they're applying to the program.
Malcolm -> Krista If I want to start in Spring 2015 when would my application need to be in?
Krista -> Malcolm Hi Malcolm, The deadline has not been posted yet but it will most likely be in early January 2015. The application will be posted in March of 2014.
Nishant_Patel -> Kara Will part-time students have the opportunity to participate in activities related to Capital Ideas and the various academic centers (CRSP).
Kara -> Nishant_Patel Nishant, yes, Booth and our affiliated centers (Kilts, CRSP, Poskly, etc) events and activities are open to all students. Capital Ideas is a great resource for all students, alumni and business professionals, as it is a means for our faculty to share their knowledge and research.
Vikram -> Krista Good afternoon, I have been working full-time in the US since 2011. I have a Bachelor of Engineering degree from a reputed institution in India (English language instruction). Do I still need to take the TOEFL?
Krista -> Vikram Hi Vikram, If you have been working in the US for more than two years, we do not require the TOEFL.
Jeremy -> Beth Does booth assist in helping students explore career options - such as interviews with companies?
Beth -> Jeremy Chicago Booth does offer career services for all of our students, including even after you've graduated - lifelong support. At Gleacher Center, there is a dedicated Career Services team to assist you, ranging from resume/interview preparation to helping you look for a new job.
Jeremy -> Katie Are there any dual degree programs available with the weekend program?
Katie -> Jeremy Hi Jeremy - The dual degree programs are difficult for part-time students to do. Booth is very flexible, but the other schools at University of Chicago have stricter requirements. Some require you are not working, which is the case with the Law School. Others, only have classes during the day. The Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy is one that is great for part-time students. http://www.ssa.uchicago.edu/gphap
Meng-Yang_Chen -> Kara Hello! Thanks for hosting the info session! I talked to Kara a bit about the new weekend CBF program for fall 2014 - just wanted to see if anything's changed date-wise for interviews, deadlines, LAUNCH orientation, etc. The dates I have are 4/26, 5/16, and 8/22-24, respectively
Kara -> Meng-Yang_Chen Meng-Yang, I hope all is well! We have a Weekend MBA CBF interview day set for April 26th. It will be added to our website soon. If you are unable to attend this interview day, email me and we can set up an alternative, kara.northcutt@chicagobooth.edu.
Brad -> Krista How often do part-time students interact with professors outside of the classroom?
Krista -> Brad Hi Brad, professors at Booth are readily available to their students! Many are known to give their personal phone numbers or are very accessible via email as well. They want to see their students succeed and will go to great lengths to make sure they understand the material.
Chris_Marshall -> Krista On the volunteering subject, I volunteered throughout my high school and college with an organization. However, now that I have moved away, I only volunteer on the few times a year that I visit. Would this be something I could reference?
Krista -> Chris_Marshall Hi Chris, Yes, you can reference this since you are still currently involved! Please explain your involvement in the activities section on the application.
Jeremy -> Beth What benefits are available to Alumni?
Beth -> Jeremy As an alum, you have the option of taking three free Chicago Booth classes anytime after you graduate, Career Services are available to you for life, and you are connected to over 40,000 alums via the Community Directory.
Sam -> Krista Does having a professional certification such as the CPA provide you an advantage in the application profess?
Krista -> Sam Hi Sam, We do look at certificates that applicants have when reviewing their applications. It shows commitment to a program outside of work, which will hopefully translate to their dedication in the classroom as well.
Solon2002 -> Kara I currently hold a Masters Degree from DePaul would there be possibility of transferring some of those previously attained credits?
Kara -> Solon2002 Booth does not allow transfer credits from other schools. You will be required to complete 20 courses at Booth. Keep in mind Booth's curriculum is very flexible. You would not need to retake courses you have already taken. You could take a more advance replacement.
Randy_Coker -> Krista If you travel for work occasionally are the professors lenient when it comes to missing classes?
Krista -> Randy_Coker Hi Randy! If you travel for work, professors are usually understanding and you are able to attend another section of their class during the week/weekend. It is difficult to miss classes completely since we do not record the classes. If there is a quarter where you will be traveling a lot, then we encourage students to take only Weekend classes to avoid to missing too many classes.
Jeremy -> Katie Do you stay with your class/cohort for the entire 2.5 year experience?
Katie -> Jeremy Jeremy - Good question. Booth students are not in cohorts. You get to choose the 20 classes you take while you're here. You are however in a cohort for LAUNCH (orientation) so you start off getting to know a smaller group of people.
Malcolm -> Beth What's the average time that applicants are notified of a decision?
Beth -> Malcolm Once you completed application has been received, you will have a decision from our office within 4-6 weeks but average closer to 3-4. If you are considering applying to multiple schools, I do recommend submitting your applications within a close time frame.
Jerel -> Beth Hello,I know that some schools structure their courses so that the work/assignments are more collaborative (i.e. group work). Does the same apply to Booth, or does it vary by course?
Beth -> Jerel Jerel, it does depend on the coursework. For example, in Financial Acct you could work together in groups to do assignments but will have to take the final on your own. Chicago Booth does offer you course evaluations, so you can see the breakdown of group work vs individual work a particular course has.
mahesh -> Katie For someone with more than 10 years of experience, do you still recommend the part-time program or should we be looking at Executive MBA?
Katie -> mahesh Hi Mahesh - We have students with 10+ years of work experience in the Evening MBA and Weekend MBA. The Executive MBA average is 12 years of work experience. This means either could be a good fit for you. I recommend setting up some time to talk to me and we can go over the differences. My email is katie.coogan@chicagobooth.edu.
Lincoln -> Krista I noticed that on your class snapshot, outside of financial services and investment management, there is a wide range of industry diversity. Is this by design? Is a unique career background considered a strength/advantage for admissions?
Krista -> Lincoln Hi Lincoln, We are looking for students with diverse backgrounds; however, it does not hurt you if you have experience in one of our largely represented industries. More importantly, we're looking for applicants that are motivated, seeking a challenge and describe very thoughtfully why they want to attend Booth.
Sam -> Krista even though the essay and integrated reasoning sections do not make up the overall GMAT score, how closely do you look at these sections?
Krista -> Sam Hi Sam, we look at each component of the GMAT; however, the APA and IR sections are not as influential as the verbal and quantitative scores.
Meng-Yang_Chen -> Kara Question 2: out of curiosity, do you guys get many engineers do you guys typically coming into the program with little experience in finance/economics? I am interested in taking a few electives since my undergrad schedule was too busy, even though I'm more interested in strategy management in the long term
Kara -> Meng-Yang_Chen Yes, many of our students have engineering backgrounds and have not yet formally studied or worked in business. We value diverse backgrounds and engineers tend to do very well in the program. We allow you to design your own curriculum, which allows you to take courses in a variety of function areas (econ, finance, strategy, entrepreneurship, etc).
Jeremy -> Beth How much out of class course work/study should be expected during the weekend program while taking two courses?
Beth -> Jeremy Jeremy, it really depends on the courses you are taking and your familiarity with the subject matter. We love our data at Chicago Booth so as a a student you will be provided with course evaluations to see exactly what the average time spent outside of the classroom is for each course.
Jerel -> Krista If someone is accepted to the weekend program, how long will they have to give the school a final decision?
Krista -> Jerel Hi Jerel, We give admitted students a week to give us their decision if you submit close to the deadline.
Chris_Marshall -> Kara What percentage of applicants to the evening program typically get accepted?
Kara -> Chris_Marshall Chis, we do not publish our acceptance rate. We matriculate approximately 150 for Autumn quarter and 70-80 for Winter, Spring and Summer quarters.
Jeremy -> Krista Are transportation, lodging, meals for Saturday all organized through Booth? Is lodging mandatory at booth facilities on Friday evening?
Krista -> Jeremy Hi Jeremy, We provide transportation to and from both airports in Chicago. Food and lodging are up to the student to provide for themselves. We have hotels in the area that offer discounts to University of Chicago students/staff.
Kim -> Beth On average, how much financial aid can a student expect to receive for Evening MBA program?
Beth -> Kim Kim, I'm not sure the average amount our students receive but you can feel free to email the Financial Aid office at financial.aid@ChicagoBooth.edu and they would be able to give you this information.
Moderator -> Everyone We are half way through the chat and have had great questions so far. Please continue to submit your questions! We will try to answer all of them today.
Pam -> Krista Does Booth award any scholarships to students participating in the part-time program?
Krista -> Pam Hi Pam, We do not have scholarships for part-time students since the majority of our students are working full-time. Students are eligible for federal loans amounting to the total tuition at Booth.
Vikram -> Krista After submitting an application, when can we expect to find out about the interview? Does the interviewer have access to our application?
Krista -> Vikram Hi Vikram, when you submit your application you receive an email shortly after asking you to log-on to our database and register for your interview. It is a blind interview, which means they will see your resume but not your application before they interview you.
Garrett_K -> Katie Is it possible to get credit for applicable classes taken completed during undergrad (ie accounting, economics, statistics)?
Katie -> Garrett_K Hi Garrett - If you have taken Booth classes as a non-degree seeking student, then, up to three can count towards your MBA. Those courses can't count towards another degree. Booth does not accept transfer credit from other universities. In general, if you have taken business undergraduate courses, our professors will cover that material in the first three weeks. Most students start with basic accounting, statistics, and microeconomics courses. You can take an upper level course all the way to PhD courses if the basic class will not be challenging enough.
Alice -> Kara Hi, if I plan on taking the GMAT in spring 2014, pending acceptance, when would be the ideal time for enrollment?
Kara -> Alice Alice, you could apply for Summer quarter if you take the exam and complete the application by April 4th. Otherwise, you can apply to any future quarter. Our Evening MBA deadline for Autumn quarter is July 1st. We matriculate and Evening MBA class in autumn, winter, spring and summer and Weekend MBA classes in autumn and spring.
Brad -> Krista If you matriculate in the Autumn quarter, is the LAUNCH program commingled with the full-time students, or does it remain separate?
Krista -> Brad Hi Brad, the LAUNCH programs for full-time and part-time are always separate.
Jeremy -> Beth Approximately what percentage of course work could be labeled as lecture, individual work/study, or group projects?
Beth -> Jeremy Jeremy, it really depends on the course. There isn't one formula which works for every Booth course. The course evaluations, provided for every course, would be able to give you the breakdown of the course work.
Sam -> Katie Does having a professional certification such as CPA help with the application?
Katie -> Sam Hi Sam - The Admissions Committee definitely sees value in professional certifications. You should include it in the application.
Meng-Yang_Chen -> Krista Is it feasible to schedule a class visit on a weekend the same day/weekend as the interview, to knock them both out at the same time?
Krista -> Meng-Yang_Chen Hi Meng-Yang, Yes, that is very common! Classes take place on Saturday's from 9am-noon and 1:30-4:30p.m. If you would like to schedule a class visit, please take a look at the options posted below and email eveningweekend-classvisit@chicagobooth.edu your top three choices and dates:
Kim -> Beth Thanks for taking the time to answer some question. Do evening MBA students typically NOT go through the important summer internship program, since we (at least I am) already working full-time? Or is there a way of doing that without quitting our jobs that I'm just not thinking of?
Beth -> Kim Kim, the vast majority of Evening MBA students do not participate in a summer internship for exactly the reason you specified - they are already working full-time. If this is something you would like to do, you can pursue it but I imagine it would be difficult to have a full-time job and internship at the same time.
Brad -> Kara What resources does the school offer to help students launch ventures? Is the support generally through the Polsky Center?
Kara -> Brad Brad, yes, much of this takes place via the Polsky Center. It is best to pair entrepreneurship courses with Polsky Center activities. In class, you will work with other students also seeking to or who have already began their own venture. The classroom experience is a great way to build your network. Many students also get involved in the New Venture Challenge and the New Social Venture Challenge, which is facilitated through Polsky Center.
Dilip -> Krista Hello - Whats the flexibility to switch over from Weekend-MBA to PHd programs? What kind of financial assistance is available for Phd?
Krista -> Dilip Hi Dilip, If you wanted to become a PhD student you would need to withdraw from the Weekend MBA program and apply to the PhD program. We encourage applicants who are deciding between programs to apply to the program that they intend to stay with since it is much harder to transfer once you already attend Booth. I would reach out to the PhD office and inquire about financial aid for their students: phd@ChicagoBooth.edu
Erik_Tatje -> Katie Is there a specific number of applicants that are accepted to the Chicago Business Fellows?
Katie -> Erik_Tatje Erik - We usually bring in 25-35 CBF'ers each Autumn. That number will be higher this year as the first Weekend CBF class will start this Autumn. We do not have a maximum so if there are more qualified applicants, we can bring in more students.
Moderator -> Everyone Our chat will be ending in 20 minutes. Please submit your final questions so we can answer all of them!
Garrett_K -> Krista What is the average undergraduate GPA for the evening program? Is your undergrad transcript used or referenced for the interview?
Krista -> Garrett_K Hi Garrett, the average GPA is a 3.3. The transcript is not viewed before the interview.
Meng-Yang_Chen -> Kara Question about the Take 3 program - are the 3 free courses prior to graduation usable for graduation requirements (i.e. you'd only be paying for 17 courses), or are they meant to provide the opportunity to take additional courses if the student was interested (graduating with 23 courses)?
Kara -> Meng-Yang_Chen For Take 3, as a current student, the courses are in addition to your 20 required courses. Therefor, you pay for 20 and can take an additional 3 for free. Take 3 courses as a student can count toward concentrations. Then, as an alum, you can return and take an additional 3 courses for free.
Randy_Coker -> Beth I worked full-time for my undergrad and went to school full-time, similar to the evening program at Booth. However, in counting up how many years I have, it states to only count after graduation. Isn't this a double standard?
Beth -> Randy_Coker While we ask for months of full-time experience post undergrad graduation, but if you would like to include your work experience, you certainly can. You may also want to include a note (optional essay) to explain.
Dilip -> Krista Is there a conditional admission for weekend-mba, while we wait for GMAT scores?
Krista -> Dilip Hi Dilip, we require your self-reported scores when you submit your application. Once you're admitted to the program we ask for your official GMAT scores.
Vikram -> Beth I attended a class and wanted to know if we are eligible to attend more than one class before applying?
Beth -> Vikram Vikram, good question. Yes, you can certainly visit another class before applying. Here are the class visit options for this quarter: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/admissions/class-visit?source=modules_engage_eve
Rahul -> Krista For the GRE exam, what's an acceptable score for the essay section (Analytical Writing)? (I have a top notch verbal and analytical score; but my essay score might leave a bit to be desired).
Krista -> Rahul Hi Rahul, We do not have averages for the GRE yet since we just started accepting applications with these scores.
Part-timeMBA_2014 -> Katie If I apply and am accepted into the part-time program, but later decide I want to pursue a full-time MBA (circumstances change), what steps would I need to take to change? Or is it possible to switch from part-time to full-time?
Katie -> Part-timeMBA_2014 Hello - You can't transfer between the MBA programs at Booth. The admissions directors are happy to work with you to decide which program is best before you apply. If you are enrolled in one program and want to switch, you need to withdraw from the original program and reapply to the other program.
Lincoln -> Kara Do part-time students receive full access to career growth programs and recruit events? Does it matter if a student receives tuition reimbursement from their current employer?
Kara -> Lincoln If you receive $8000 or more per year in tuition reimbursement, you will need your company's permission to participate in On Campus Recruiting (OCR) for full time jobs. Evening MBA and Weekend MBA students are not allowed to participate in OCR for internships. With that said, please keep in mind OCR is one of many programs offered by Career Services and is the only program that requires company permission. You are able to meet with career coaches, utilize our job posting database and attend their non OCR career workshops without company permission.
Jeremy -> Krista Over a 10/11 week semester, will out of state students be required to travel to Chicago every Saturday? How many absenses are authorized?
Krista -> Jeremy Hi Jeremy, Yes, students are expected to attend class each Saturday. Absences are not allowed unless you have an emergency.
Dilip -> Beth Question on switching between programs - Seems like we need to reapply every time. If we are accepted, can we transfer the course work towards the more recent degree?
Beth -> Dilip Dilip, if you are interested in transferring between Evening MBA and Weekend MBA Programs, you can do a one-time transfer which entails you coming to our Program Office and completing a form. If you are interested in applying to Full-Time, you would need to withdraw from classes, apply, be admitted, and then transfer. Also you can only transfer three courses. I highly recommend visiting classes to help you decide which program is best for you.
Dimitar -> Krista How heavily are the years of work experience weighted in the admissions process? For instance, I am an engineer who will have just over 3 years of full time experience by the time the Autumn 2014 quarter starts. Would you recommend waiting another year or two to apply or do you regularly accept applicants with 3 years of experience?
Krista -> Dimitar Hi Dimitar, If you are ready to apply, we encourage applicants like yourself to go ahead with their application.
Vikram -> Katie When evaluating an applicant's career progression, what defining characteristics do you look for?
Katie -> Vikram Hi Vikram - There is not one path or career progression we are looking for. Rather, we want to here from you why now is a good time for you to come to Booth and what you will do with the degree. You do not have to be managing a large team or be a director to be admitted to Booth. We value all kinds of work experience.
Brad -> Kara Can you provide a concrete example of how the school’s location affects the student’s experience, particularly the Gleacher Center for part-time students?
Kara -> Brad Brad, the Gleacher Center is a convenient location for those living and working in the Chicago land area, as we have discount parking for students and it is easily accessible via public transportation. For our Weekend MBA students, we offer a free shuttle to and from both airports on Saturday morning and afternoon for those who travel in for class. For those who stay overnight, campus is located near dozens of hotels that offer Booth student discounts.
alex -> Krista How many MBA candidates enter the program with previously obtained Master's degrees (e.g., MS in Accountancy)? Does this impact the application?
Krista -> alex Hi Alex, Having post-graduate experience is definitely a benefit. Around 20-25% of incoming students have advanced degrees when they start the program.
Chris_Marshall -> Katie Is there any weight place on the current company a candidate is working for?
Katie -> Chris_Marshall Hi Chris - We do not work with quotas for companies at Booth. We want to hear about how your work experience has shaped you thus far and in many cases the company has something to do with it. If you work for a small firm or a start up that is not a disadvantage as compared to larger firms.
Sam -> Beth do you consider less than 2 years too little work experience to apply?
Beth -> Sam Have you considered our Chicago Business Fellows Program (http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/evening/admissions/chicago-business-fellows)? It is designed for individuals with less than three years of work experience. We have both an Evening and Weekend option.
Sabtiha -> Krista Hello, I am curious to know Finanacial aid options. My employer contributes towards tuition cost but doesnot cover much. What options are available with Booth?
Krista -> Sabtiha Sabtiha, students are eligible to take out financial aid in the form of federal loans. For more information on financial aid please visit this website: http://www.chicagobooth.edu/programs/weekend/admissions/tuition-financial-aid
Rahul -> Beth I was heavily technical in my engineering career. I've switched roles this year that'll expose me to the non-technical roles in a company. I want to start an MBA this year with an intent to rise in the company - though I do not still know myself, if I want to stay on the technical or non-technical side. Is this going to be seen as acceptable in the essay about what I want to achieve in the long run?
Beth -> Rahul Rahul, I think as long as you explain your reasoning for the MBA in your essays, even if it includes not knowing exactly what your long-term plan will be, you won't need to worry. You can also utilize your interview to discuss your long-term plans.
Kim -> Kara Do you know a good source to get advise on the best way to talk to our current employer about wanting to continue our education and pursue an MBA?
Kara -> Kim Kim, I suggest you think about why you want to pursue your MBA and talk to your company about how the skills you will learn in your MBA will expand your knowledge, enhance your critical thinking skills and build your confidence. For example, Booth's curriculum is very flexible and we allow you to take courses most relevant and interesting to you. If you are moving toward a management role, you can discuss how courses like Managing the Workplace and Managerial Decision Making will make you a better manager.
Randy_Coker -> Kara Do you waitlist applicants or is it yes/ no?
Kara -> Randy_Coker Yes, we sometimes utilize the wait list. It is most common for applicants who apply weeks or months before the deadline. It simply means you are still being considered for the program.
Moderator -> Everyone Our session has now ended. Thank you so much for spending the time with us - your questions were pointed and insightful.
