Alaina Anderson is a Partner at William Blair & Company. Alaina joined William Blair in 2006 as a Research Analyst on the International Growth team and has over a decade of experience covering several sectors. In her current role, Alaina is responsible for providing research and recommendations on stocks within the real estate and utilities sectors in both developed and emerging markets. In addition to her research responsibilities, Alaina is intimately involved in the client retention, business development and talent recruitment activities of her team and the Firm.

Prior to joining William Blair, Alaina was a Senior Analyst in the Investments Department of the MacArthur Foundation. Her responsibilities included providing research support for internally managed portfolios, as well as investment manager due diligence, selection and monitoring for the Foundation’s U.S., Non-U.S. and hedge fund portfolios. Alaina is the former president of the Chicago Booth School of Business Black Alumni Association, was a 2014 Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow and now serves on the board of the Leadership Fellows Association of Leadership Greater Chicago. She is also a board member and Fundraising Chair of the North Lawndale Employment Network and a member of the William Blair Community Impact Steering Committee.

Alaina graduated from Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Economics and earned her M.B.A. from Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in analytic finance and economics. She was awarded the CFA charter in 2006.

Miguel is an engaging professional who has held high-level executive roles in Strategy, Business Development, and Commercial Leadership for companies such as Apple (his current role), GE, and Motorola. His experience in these roles might be helpful for students seeking technology careers at well-established companies.He also has experience working in M+A and Equity Investments in technology start-ups which might be interesting for those interested in pursuing corporate M+A or VC careers.Additionally, he has held an executive role at a Venture Capital-Backed start-up in the healthcare space and this experience parallels well with the Polsky Institute.

Outside of business, Miguel has served on the faculty for the MBA Program at Edgewood College (Madison, WI), where he served as an adjunct professor of International Management. He has served in multiple Board of Director roles in both early-stage technology companies (BoD of the Wisconsin Biotechnology and Medical Device Association) in the US and internationally, as well as volunteer leadership for non-profit organizations.

A commercial real estate investor for over 30 years and an active civic leader, Gavin founded Steelbridge in 2006 after serving as President and CEO of the Florida Office Property Company, a 2.6 million square foot office REIT that he assembled, managed and ultimately sold just prior to the 2007-2009 recession for gross returns in excess of 20%. Prior to this, he served as Managing Director of Acquisitions at LaSalle Investment Management where he invested over $1 billion for LaSalle’s clients in a broad range of property types, consistently outperforming NCREIF benchmarks by 200-400 basis points. Prior to joining LaSalle, Gavin founded, developed and sold Restoration Capital, a real estate private equity firm that invested in retail and multifamily in the Chicago neighborhoods of Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, Bucktown and Logan Square.

Gavin is the former Executive Director of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago, former President of Leadership Greater Chicago, the Ravenswood River Neighbors Association, the Young Leaders Fund and the Latino Chicago Theater Company. He is also the former Chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, where he co-led the effort to save the internationally acclaimed Mies Van Der Rohe designed Farnsworth House and open it as an international museum. Gavin is currently a member of the Yale Development Council and Yale Parent’s Council and is an active Little League and AYSO soccer coach. He received a BA Magna Cum Laude from Yale College in 1982 and holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute.

Gavin, his wife and three children live in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago.

In his role, Atul leads Diplomat’s financial operations and investor relations efforts. He also is responsible for managing liquidity, balance sheet risk, and capital market transactions to ensure Diplomat remains well-positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities.

Atul has over two decades of financial experience. Prior to Diplomat, he served as the chief financial officer of LivingSocial, Inc., an e-commerce retailer, from June 2015 to December 2016, and was responsible for overall financial and operational improvement of the business. He previously held executive roles at Walgreens, from December 2009 to December 2013, and at Sears Holdings Corporation’s health and wellness division, which includes the Kmart Pharmacy chain, from December 2013 to May 2015.

In addition to his previous CFO experience, Atul has a deep background in financial management, operational improvement, and company leadership, as well as in strategic corporate and business development. Atul also has extensive experience in mergers, acquisitions, and capital markets as an investment banker.

John serves in a strategic role as the co-head of fixed income for Nuveen Asset Management, responsible for the investment process and performance of the firm’s municipal fixed income group. He is also the lead manager of the High Yield Municipal Bond Strategy, the California High Yield Municipal Bond Strategy, and related institutional portfolios. In addition, he co-manages the All-American Municipal Bond Strategy and the Strategic Municipal Opportunities Strategy and oversees a number of closed-end funds.

As the co-head of fixed income, John leads one of the largest and most experienced municipal bond managers in the investment industry. The firm’s team of more than 40 portfolio managers, sector specialists, analysts and traders covers the full spectrum of municipal sectors and niche markets across the United States and its territories. John oversees Nuveen Asset Management’s actively managed investment approach that is firmly rooted in rigorous, bottom-up credit research to help identify attractively valued municipal bond investments. As they seek out investment opportunities, his team members are able to leverage Nuveen Asset Management’s large market presence and rich heritage of more than 100 years in the municipal marketplace*.

John is a trusted public voice in discussing key issues and trends within the municipal market. He is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg Television and Fox Business News. His perspective is often sought out by leading industry media such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Bloomberg News and Morningstar. He has also served as a panelist on Barron’s Municipal Bond Roundtable. John’s background features over 20 years of experience in the municipal marketplace. Before being named the co-head of fixed income in 2011, he was chief investment officer for the firm’s municipal bond team starting in 2007. He was named a managing director and head of portfolio management for Nuveen Asset Management in 2006. John became a portfolio manager in 2000 after starting at the firm as a municipal credit analyst in 1996. He began working in the financial industry at a private account management firm in 1993.

John earned a B.A. in economics and political science from Duke University, an M.A. in economics from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. in finance with honors from the University of Chicago. He is a member of the Harris Council Board at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy and a member of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts. John also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.

 

Charlie Talbot has served as CFO for Athletico Physical Therapy since April of 2015. He has overall responsibility for the financial management of the organization, including operational planning and forecasting, resource allocation, development, and investor reporting.  He also oversees Information Technology and Billing and Collecting operations.  Athletico has over 330 physical therapy locations across the Midwest as well as in Arizona and South Dakota.  The company employs over 4000 employees and offers more than 40 specialty rehabilitation, outreach and fitness services.

Prior to joining Athletico, Talbot served as Senior Vice President and CFO for Potbelly Sandwich Works from 2008-2015.  There, he led Potbelly Sandwich Works’ initial public offering, turning Potbelly into a publicly traded company and generating upwards of $108 million in net proceeds. Prior to joining Potbelly, Talbot served as Vice President of Strategy, Corporate Planning, and Development at Nuveen Investments. Before his role at Nuveen, Talbot spent nine years in the restaurant industry with YUM! Brands. He held various roles with within YUM! Brands including Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Mergers and Acquisitions, and CFO of several operating divisions of the company.  

Talbot is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He also holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He and his wife, Peggy, reside in Lake Forest, Illinois with their four children.

 

Sheila Hooda is an independent board director and a recognized transformation leader with a breadth of global business, financial and technology expertise. She is the CEO & President of Alpha Advisory Partners providing strategic advisory services to C-Suites of Financial, Business & Professional services firms facing digital, market or regulatory disruption. Ms. Hooda is a former C-level operating executive with 30 years of leadership expertise noted for successfully leading customer-centric transformations, driving growth & strategic development at Fortune 500 firms. From 1998-2014 Ms. Hooda was the Global Head of multiple functional and operating areas at TIAA, Credit Suisse Investment Bank and Thomson Reuters. She has led businesses in the US, Europe, Asia and India, and started her career in the USA as a strategy management consultant with McKinsey & Co. 

Ms. Hooda serves on the board of Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company, a Fortune 350 full-service, multi-line organization providing insurance, banking and financial products where she sits on the Risk and the Investment Committees. She also serves on the board of Virtus Investment Partners (NASDAQ: VRTS), a leading investment management firm where she serves on the Audit and the Risk and Finance Committees. As a thought leader on Governance, Strategy & Leadership, she was honored by Directors & Boards Magazine as a Director to Watch 2016. NACD Directorship and C-Suite magazines have also profiled her in their Board Spotlight.  She has been recognized by the National Association of Corporate Directors as a Board Leadership Fellow. In addition, Ms. Hooda serves on multiple non-profit boards and think tanks focused on Global Policy, Education and Women’s Empowerment.
