A first-generation American, he completed his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering before attending the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. During his medical rotations, he identified significant room for improvement in applying business principles to the health care system. This prompted him to pursue an MBA from Chicago Booth to assist him in providing enhanced management and efficiency principles to his career as a radiologist.

Basu then leveraged his diverse experience to join the Stanford Medical Center, where he created a course on health policy, finance, and economics for both medical and business students. He began a consulting career with medical centers and Fortune 500 companies and is cofounder of two additional ventures: Extend MD, a web portal to enhance outpatient care, and STARS Luncheon, a nonprofit to support the career success of disadvantaged children. His outstanding track record as a physician, consultant, educator, entrepreneur, and public servant has earned Basu the Distinguished Young Alumni Award.
