Booth Community Cleans Chicago River

By Webb Brown, '13  |  may, 2012

With over 60 attendees from the Booth community, we hit the banks of the Chicago River last week for the first ever Booth Gives Back day of service. After early speeches from Dean Kumar and Dean Gertner, our dedicated group of volunteers disregarded the gloomy weather and suited up in the name of giving back.  Our group fanned out across two locations in South Chicago to get our hands dirty and make an impact. The morning of hard work was capped off with lunch and a social gathering afterwards.

The day was coordinated with Friends of the Chicago River in a citywide effort to rid the riverbanks of remnant trash.  In total, there were thousands of volunteers cleaning up 70 river sites across the city. Friends of the Chicago River has been actively working to improve the health of the 156-mile river system since 1979. We hope this is the first of many events in coordination with the organization.

Thanks to great planning of Chris Meyers and Megan Hart (part-time program), as well as Laura Jones (full-time program) for putting the event together. Also, we extend a special thanks to Deans Kumar and Gertner for their financial and moral support to help make the day a big success.

Megan and Chris would like to extend a thank you to Jenny Foughner, Evening MBA student, and Holly Shearer from the E&W Program Office for their help in planning the event.
