The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan (the Durand Line) is 1,640 miles long, mountainous and remote terrain. Stretched on a map of the United States, the Pakistan-Afghanistan border would run from New York City to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
One of the most important legacies inherited by Pakistan from Britain is the ' Frontier Problem '. The British, during their rule of almost a hundred years, did not find a proper solution for it, although a number of different policies were tried out in turn, and each was given up for one reason or another. In no region of the world has the U.S. policy been so changed in the last decade than it has in South Asia. The Pakistan-Afghanistan border area has become the most dangerous frontier on earth, and the most challenging for the United States' national security interests.

K. Rizwan Kadir (Speaker) '97

K. Rizwan Kadir, '97, is a senior management consultant to Fortune 100 companies in the areas of strategic planning, governance, and financial management. He started his career with an investment banking firm and worked at emerging growth firms at Director and C-level positions, including Chief Operating and Compliance Officer of an investment firm. He has an MBA in Analytic Finance, Economics, and International Business from the University of Chicago. Besides undergraduate education at Northwestern University, he has extensive post-MBA coursework in quantitative finance at Chicago.
A firm proponent of servant leadership, Kadir believes in giving back to one’s communities. Over the last 10 years, he has served on several university and professional organizations’ boards. Since 9/11, he has been involved in inter-faith dialogs in the North Shore suburbs, and also worked on a project with the US Treasury’s Counter-Terrorism Unit to develop financial and governance guidelines for the US-based Islamic charities. Kadir speaks on financial and international topics at professional and media forums and has been interviewed and quoted by the Washington Post, and Voice of America, among others.
M. Salahuddin Khan (Speaker)

M. Salahuddin Khan was born in Burewala, Pakistan, in 1952. At the age of 4, he was brought to England in a family migration and grew up there in Yorkshire. Earning a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Southampton, he entered his career as an aerospace engineer with British Aircraft Corporation. Over the next several years he entered the auto industry and finally settled into Boston-based Computervision Corporation in 1979. While there he held positions as UK Marketing Manager and European Marketing Director, before moving with that company to its US headquarters near Boston in 1988, rising ultimately to the role of Chief Technology Officer in 1996.
In 1998 he came to Chicago with digital map-maker NAVTEQ when it was a tiny $9m-a-year company operating from Rosemont. Spending nine years with that company in both marketing and technology roles (he held the C-level job in each of those disciplines) Salahuddin decided to enter semi-retirement to follow a few passions. He had begun engaging in some of those before leaving NAVTEQ in 2007. In 2006, for example, he became publisher of ISLAMICA Magazine, as that entity became a non-profit, a position he held for two years. After ISLAMICA, in 2008, Salahuddin was also a co-executive producer of a 12-minute short movie called The Boundary, starring Alex Siddig of Syriana, Kingdom of Heaven, and Star Trek, Deep Space Nine fame. The movie dealt with the issues of civil liberties at a U.S. border crossing in a post 9/11 world.
At the end of 2009, he had the idea for a story that would surface issues stemming from America's complex and turbulent relationship over the past 30 years with the Islamic world and with the Afghanistan and Pakistan region in particular. Six weeks later, a first draft of his 600 page novel, SIKANDER, was ready. A few months later the edited typeset first edition was on its way to the printers and the book was launched in July of 2010, to rave reviews from political pundits and literary critics alike. The crowning point came in March of this year when he was informed that SIKANDER had won the 2010 Grand Prize for the Los Angeles Book Festival Awards. This placed his book in the number one spot from among more than 1,000 submitted titles across both fiction and non-fiction. Salahuddin has now been taken on by New York literary agents, LJK Literary Management.
Aside from being an award-winning author, he also founded QMarket Corporation, where he is a senior management consultant specializing in breakout growth strategies, product introductions and marketing. He numbers several prominent (including more than one Fortune 100) companies among his clients. Salahuddin holds several US Patents with others pending and enjoys design, photography, flying and art. He lives in Lake Forest, IL with his wife Rehana and family.
