From some 2 million small businesses, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce selects one company each year to be its Small Business of the Year. This year, the Small Business of the Year (for the entire country) is My Chef Catering, a truly amazing success story from Naperville. My Chef was selected from seven finalists at the awards ceremony May 24 in Washington, D.C. The story of My Chef is really the story of Karen and Bill Garlough, who founded the company 18 years ago after both left careers in Fortune 100 companies. Begun as a small gourmet deli and kitchen catering to simple corporate and social events, My Chef has grown to be one of the premiere catering companies in Chicagoland, serving 850 corporate clients and thousands of social customers. Despite its growth, My Chef has a family atmosphere. In an industry known for rapid turnover, My Chef employees have been with the company for an average of 7 years. What truly sets the Garloughs and My Chef apart is their service and contributions to the community. The company sponsors many of the major events each year in Naperville and encourages employees to support local charities through contributions of time and money. Karen and Bill set the example by being leaders in Rotary International and other service or charitable organizations. Karen has been the catalyst for the success of Cuisine for a Cause, the annual event that raises $90,000 for Naperville CARES.
