The university as an institution was born in medieval Paris, but reached its greatest extension in the modern United States. American universities borrowed a great deal—often deliberately—from their medieval predecessors. What values of the medieval university did they find attractive? How have those values shaped college education today? And how can the example of medieval Paris help us to think about the future of the university, at a time when that future is very much in flux?
