The 2013 Challenge offers the opportunity for students to act as an emerging market fund manager with the mandate to invest $250 million in real property in Brazil. Each team will put together an investment plan, and the team with the most compelling and comprehensive plan will be chosen the Challenge winner.

For twelve consecutive years, teams from Chicago Booth and Kellogg have competed against each other in a real estate challenge. The competition is designed to bring the next generation of real estate leaders together with judges representing leading real estate firms. These projects promote the students' learning by giving them hands-on experience in understanding business strategies in response to specific real estate development and investment opportunities.

Alana Elsner

Alana Elsner is a second-year MBA student at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in Finance and Economics. As an intern at Morgan Stanley over summer, she analyzed how demographic trends affect single and multi-family homebuilders. She developed a model to forecast housing starts by analyzing the ongoing impact of foreclosures, tightened credit, and demographic shifts within twenty core US cities. Prior to Booth, Alana worked at Bloomberg where she created the commodity specialist role. She graduated with honors in English from Colgate University in 2007, earning the Scott Saunders Prize for Excellence in Literature. As an undergraduate, Alana played Division I volleyball and was twice awarded Rookie of the Week.

Mark Frankel

Mark Frankel is an evening MBA candidate in his second year at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Mark works for JPMorgan Chase in the commercial real estate banking group where he finances a variety of real estate products including apartments, retail, office, industrial, and medical office properties in markets across the United States. He has worked in the real estate industry for nine years in various capacities through the recent real estate boom and bust. He has significant experience in underwriting and structuring project and corporate level transactions. Mark holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Michigan Stephen M Ross School of Business.

Amit Ghosh

Amit Ghosh is an Evening MBA Candidate concentrating in Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. As an Asset Manager for Ventas REIT, one of the leading seniors housing and healthcare real estate investment trusts, Amit manages over a $1.2B portfolio of assisted living communities and is responsible for ensuring that each community is exceeding its budgeted NOI projections. Senior housing and working with the elderly has always been a passion for Amit. Prior to Ventas, Amit constructed, started up, and managed a mid-sized assisted living community. He also spearheaded the acquisition of and successfully turned around an underperforming community. Amit holds a Bachelor's of Science and Master's in Engineering from Cornell University.

Asher Luzzatto

Asher Luzzatto is a third year law student at the University of Chicago Law School with a strong focus on real estate transactions and sustainable development. At the Law School, Asher serves as the president of the Environmental Law Society. During his 1L summer clerkship for the ACLU of Southern California, he worked on Valentini v. Shinseki, one of the most prominent land use cases in the country. During his 2L summer clerkship with Block & Garden, LLP., Asher did structuring and financing work for an Italian construction and manufacturing company. Asher will be joining the real estate law firm Pircher, Nichols & Meeks in the fall. Asher also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Political Science from UCLA.

Collin Nash

Collin Nash is a real estate analyst for CarVal Investors and commutes from Minneapolis, MN to attend the weekend MBA program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he is concentrating on economics, finance, and international business. Collin is responsible for managing real estate investments in Latin America. He has more than 7 years of experience in real estate equity and debt investments in the United States and Latin America. Prior to joining CarVal Investors in 2009, Collin worked for RSM McGladrey in its real estate assurance and advisory service practice. Collin received his B.A. in finance and accounting from Augsburg College in Minneapolis and holds a CPA license (currently inactive)

Jerome Nichols

Jerome Nichols is a first year, MBA candidate at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Co-Chair of Booth's full-time Real Estate Group. Following a career in the NFL, Jerome spent five years in multifamily real estate development with The Bozzuto Group in Greenbelt, MD. During that time, he created, and continues to operate, a residential portfolio in Washington, DC. Jerome earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Wake Forest University.

Alejandro Sanhueza

Alejandro Sanhueza is a first year MBA candidate at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, studying finance and real estate. He is from Santiago, Chile and is currently the Co-Chair of Booth's Latin American Business Group. Previously, Alejandro worked corporate finance roles in the mining & metals sector, where he focused on investments and financial risks. He also has experience in the aeronautic business and has served as an adjunct professor of finance at Universidad de los Andes in Santiago. Alejandro received his B.S in Business Administration and Economics with a concentration in Finance from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
