Event Details

The October meeting will focus on the effective implementation of long-term strategy in the real world of ever changing circumstances. We will explore the topic by through a facilitated discussion of the article “Closing the Gap Between Strategy and Execution” by Donald N. Sull from Summer 2007 issue of the MIT Sloan Management Review. (The article is available at no cost at http://sloanreview.mit.edu/smr/issue/2007/summer/12/ .) In an ideal world, managers could formulate a long-term strategy, methodically implement it, and then sustain the resulting competitive advantage. Reality, however usually fails to cooperate in a predictable and tidy fashion. The author suggests that managers instead think of strategy as inherently iterative – a loop instead of a straight line from strategy formulation to implementation. According to this view, every strategy is a work in progress which is revised according to ongoing interactons between the organization and its shifting environment. What is your reaction to the author’s ideas? Do you think that the approach to strategy implementation as outlined in this article would be practical and would it be effective? Do you have any questions that you’d like to ask the others in the room about effective strategy execution? Come ready to discuss your thoughts. Please Note: These meetings will NOT present a featured speaker. Rather, the substance of the meeting will be facilitated discussion among those attending. PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE DESIGNATED ARTICLE AHEAD OF TIME AND COME PREPARED TO JOIN THE DISCUSSION. Your participation is key to the success of this event! Meetings will be held on the third Friday of the month in the 11 South LaSalle Building. Our November meeting will be held on Friday, November 16th. The current plan is to skip December and reconvene in January 18, 2008.
