Currently they serve nearly 25,000 students in 93 inner-city schools. Eighty percent of students are ethnic minorities, 32 percent are not Catholic, and 58 percent live in poverty. Since 1986, Big Shoulders has raised over $172 million to fund scholarships, operating grants, facility improvements, instructional equipment, and special education programs. The impact of these investments is remarkable; in areas where academic achievement is low, 96 percent of students attending Big Shoulders schools graduate from high school and 87 percent go on to attend college. 100 percent of all contributions go directly to the children and schools. Over two years ago Big Shoulders formed their Auxiliary Board to engage active and altruistic young professionals who not only fundraise, but volunteer in the schools as mentors, tutors, coaches and school board members, and outreach to the community to spread the word about the Big Shoulders Fund through events and relationship development. The group has a growing membership of over 125 individuals.
