Event Details
The GCFD is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. Specifically, the GCFD distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 600 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 500,000 adults and children every year. Last year, GCFD distributed more than 46 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of more than 95,000 meals every day.
Our volunteer effort will include cleaning, sorting, and/or repacking donated food and other products and loading food onto Food Depository and member agency vehicles.
Upon arrival, GCFD personnel will provide us with a brief orientation and will talk about poverty and hunger in Chicago, how the GCFD functions, who they serve, and answer any questions we may have about GCFD’s operation. We will then spend the majority of the afternoon repacking food in the warehouse. We will be given the option of taking a short break halfway through a three hour session.
Each volunteer is encouraged to bring an item of canned food. Priority items include: Cereal, Oatmeal, Canned Vegetables, Soup, Tuna, Canned Fruit, Rice, Beans, Pasta, Pasta Sauce, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Mac ‘n Cheese, etc.
For safety reasons, the GCFD requires that:
Volunteers must be able to stand for up to 90 minutes while doing some light lifting and bending.
Volunteers must wear pants and closed toed shoes.
Jeans and sneakers are best. No volunteers may work in shorts, tank tops, or open-toed shoes.
