With sub-par returns and regulatory scrutiny increasing, many sophisticated investors are turning to the single or multi-family office models. We examine the trends, differences, and similarities of the family office model to traditional RIA's and money managers. How do family offices generate Alpha? We have a group of experienced family office veterans to share their experiences with the Booth Alumni Club of NYC.

Alex Matina (Panelist)
Vice President, Investments, MFP Investors LLC

Mr. Matina has been at MFP for more than 8 years. He is a generalist, who focuses on value investments across the capital structure, with a focus on deep value equities and distressed credit. Mr. Matina is actively involved with sourcing and selection of private equity and hedge fund investment managers and has extensive involvement with all direct private investments at firm, including sourcing, valuation and structuring. He manages and develops junior analysts at the firm. Mr. Matina has a BS from Forham University and an MBA from Columbia. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Trinity Place Holdings, and a Director at S&W Seed Company. Mr. Matina is an Adjunct Professor of Finance at Fordham and an Advisory Board member, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis at Fordham.

Brendan MacMillan (Panelist)

Prior to Ocean Road, Mr. MacMillan was PM of Legatum Capital, a multi-billion family office in Dubai. Mr. MacMillan was also a Partner and Senior Analyst at Oceanwood Capital Management, a global event and distressed debt fund, and and co-founder and CIO for the distressed bank fund, BSE Management. Prior to joining Oceanwood, he was an Analyst with Owl Creek, focusing on global distressed debt, and special situations. His prior investment experience includes roles at Clarium Capital and Windward Capital. Mr. MacMillan started his career at Merrill Lynch in the M&A. He is a cum laude graduate of Bates College with a BA in Econ, a General Course graduate from the London School of Economics, and he earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Mr. Horowitz oversees the Palm Global Small Cap Fund. Prior to Palm, he served as Director of Research for both Inverlochy Capital and Berggruen Holdings, the family office of Nicolas Berggruen. He holds a BS in Management from Binghamton University's School of Management where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He also studied at the Bath School of Management in the UK. He serves on the Board of Directors of 1347 Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: TFSC), and 1347 Property Insurance Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: PIH).

Mr. Zeuner has been serving wealthy families for more than two decades. He oversees the firm's US business strategy. Prior to his role at WE, he served as senior executive partner of GenSpring Family Offices and was managing director and global head of Wealth Solutions at JP Morgan Private Bank. A management consultant by training, he led projects in the financial services area for both Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and Booz, Allen & Hamilton. Mr. Zeuner graduated from Brandeis University, (B.A.) and earned an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Mr. Kapoor joined Ehrenkranz Partners, L.P., in 2006 and is responsible for the oversight of the investment research process, including identifying and monitoring the firm's investments. Previously, he was an analyst at Pine Grove Asset Management, a $2 billion asset management firm, where he focused on investing in various hedge fund strategies. Mr. Kapoor received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance and Manufacturing Managing & Consulting from Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business.
