Event Details

Following Russia's occupation and illegal annexation of Crimea, a portion of two far eastern regions of Ukraine was, and still is, occupied by pro-Russian separatists. The current "frozen" conflict in the occupied portions of the Donbas [eastern Ukraine], with its huge costs in human, personal property, infrastructure, and financial terms, is draining the Ukrainian economy and is threatening financial assistance promised by Europe. The new government in Kiev, which is committed to the ideals of a pro-Western democratic society and a market-driven economy, is hampered by the still heavy baggage of the former Soviet system.

Chicago's relationship to current economic and political developments in Ukraine goes back to the late 1800s. Since then, Chicago has had a vibrant Ukrainian diaspora whose members are always proud to be citizens of the United States and proud of their cultural heritage. A former first lady of Ukraine is not only a Chicago native but also a Booth graduate. The current Minister of Finance who assumed her post this year is also a Chicagoland native. Ros Smyk will update us on Ukraine's current situation from the perspective of a Chicago-based member of the diaspora.
