The Pakistan Club, in collaboration with the Islamic Studies Club at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, is proud to host a unique discussion of the role of satire in a modern context, especially as it pertains to American Muslims in particular, and Muslims in the West in general.
Our two speakers, Sayeed Khan and Imran Husaian, will share their personal journey in creating the Okra which is arguably the first one of its kind.
Sayeed Khan's talk will explain the basics of satire, how it's used on a socio-political level, how Muslim-themed satire resonates with Muslims in America and abroad (in various mediums, including Muslim themed, film shorts), and some of the issues involved in creating the Okra, which was the first Muslim themed satire in this format.
Some of the issues to be addressed by Sayeed Khan will be:
-What is satire and how does it work?
-Does satire always provide social commentary or have social relevance?
-How is Muslim-themed satire received by Muslims in America, as well as mainstream audiences/readers? Also why Muslims abroad appreciate certain types of satire but are hateful of other types.
Imran Husain will discuss the following:
1. The origins of the Okra. What fueled the idea?
2. The decision to figure out on what to write and how content was created
3. How did the Okra evolve from hard beat news to other genres of writing?
4. Reaction by readers; was this a hard sell?
5. Notoriety and its exposure at a national level; what makes the Okra different from other competitors.

Other Information
The Pakistan Club, now in its 12th year, started out as an alumni organization at Chicago Booth. Over the years, we partnered with other divisions for our activities. Our members are from all Divisions of the University, including current students, alumni, and faculty. We have conducted Admissions sessions, high-profile presentations by senior corporate executives, policy makers, and academics (including a Nobel economist). We also hosted a highly successful investment conference about Pakistan and another one about the the Silk Road countries.
The Islamic Studies Club, also known as Majlis, works in coordination with the CAS Islamic Studies Workshop to provide a forum for graduate students from various disciplines and areas of study to share their research and insights on Islam and Muslims in a way that is not methodologically, geographically, or temporally bound. The Islamic Studies Club also holds social activities to foster friendships and collegiality among students and scholars.
