Event Details

"The portrait of Obama is a major reason to read this book," wrote Barbara Hoffert in reviewing David Axelrod's Believer for the Library Journal.

Of course, there's more than that to the book. The complete title is Believer: My Forty Years in Politics and it touches on all four decades. Axelrod has a career description that belongs only to him: "the mastermind behind Barack Obama's historic election campaigns."

In the wake of one successful senate campaign and two winning presidential campaigns with Obama, Axelrod later served as a senior advisor to the president. But Axelrod's career did not begin in politics. He first worked as a reporter and columnist for the Chicago Tribune. After 8 years of writing about the corruption and nuances of Windy City politics, Axelrod became a campaign consultant.

Believer tells the story of his journey from Chicago campaigning to the lofty challenge of presidential politics. His recollections and analysis of Chicago politics explain how the end of the traditional machines made way for the rise of Barak Obama to senator and beyond.

His work was not always for the triumphant — while he advised President Obama, Hillary Clinton and Rahm Emanuel, he also dealt with such challenges as up-and-coming politician Rod Blagojevic in early campaigns.
