Event Details
This presentation will address the current state of the U.S.-Pakistan relationship. It will identify lessons that U.S. policymakers should bear in mind as they craft policies for the upcoming years; discuss the challenges at hand; and offer a vision for bilateral ties that allows each side to maximize opportunities for cooperation. Emphasis will be placed on the desirability of enhancing relations with the Pakistani private sector, Pakistan's young, rising urban middle class, and other key unofficial interlocutors.

Michael Kugelman is senior program associate for South and Southeast Asia at the Woodrow Wilson Center, where he is responsible for research, programming, and publications on South and Southeast Asia. His most recent work has focused on India-Pakistan relations, U.S.-Pakistan relations, youth movements and social media in Pakistan, and security challenges in India. Since 2009, much of his scholarship has emphasized natural resource issues in South Asia, and particularly in India and Pakistan. He has published op-eds, commentaries, and blog posts in the New York Times, Foreign Policy, Huffington Post, International Herald Tribune, World Politics Review, Dawn, Express Tribune, Times of India, Asia Times Online, Newsline, and Daily Times. He has been interviewed by numerous major media outlets including the New York Times, Financial Times, National Geographic, Christian Science Monitor, CNN, National Public Radio, Reuters, and Voice of America. Mr. Kugelman received his M.A. in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. He received his B.A. from American University's School of International Service. He has written and edited a number of publications on South Asia, including most recently The Global Farms Race: Land Grabs, Agricultural Investment, and the Scramble for Food Security (Island Press, 2013), Reaping the Dividend: Overcoming Pakistan's Demographic Challenges and India's Contemporary Security Challenges (both Wilson Center 2011). He has also published journal articles and book chapters on issues ranging from South Asia's media environment to transboundary water management in South Asia. The Pakistan Club, now in its 9th year, started out as an alumni organization at Chicago Booth. Over the years, we have partnered with other divisions for our programming as well as activities. Now, we have members from all divisions of the University, including current students, alumni, and faculty. We have conducted Admissions sessions, high-profile presentations by senior corporate executives, policy makers, and academics (including one Nobel Laureate economist). We also hosted a highly successful investment conference about Pakistan and another one about the emerging opportunities in the Silk Road countries.
