Event Details
Speakers will include Philip Hablutzel, Kathy Schaeffer, and Kristen Romans. Our speakers will share their experiences and insights gained from years of service in the not-for-profit community. There will also be a discussion about the legal responsibilities of and protections for boards and board members. This program is designed to help you know how to start the process of getting onto a board, your duties and responsibilities along the way, and how to protect yourself.

Speaker Profiles
Philip Hablutzel, AM'61, JD'67 (Speaker)
Philip Hablutzel received his Masters (Political Science) from the University of Chicago and his law degree in 1967 from the University of Chicago Law School. After four years as a Research Attorney at the American Bar Foundation, he joined the faculty of the Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1971. His major teaching courses include Corporation Law, Securities Regulation, Banking Law, International Capital Markets, International Commercial Arbitration, and Non-Profit Law. He has published a three-volume treatise on Corporation Law, a two-volume work on International Banking Law, and numerous law review articles.
In the mid-1980s, Phil joined the Illinois Secretary of State's Corporate Laws Advisory Committee as the Reporter for a complete revision of the Illinois General Not For Profit Corporation Act. Since the adoption of that revision, he has sponsored Kent's Annual Conference on Not For Profit Law. The 31st Annual Conference is scheduled for Thursday, June 7, 2012. In 2005, the Illinois Secretary of State terminated its sponsorship of the Corporate Laws Advisory Committee and the group moved its operations to Chicago Kent Law School as the Institute of Illinois Business Laws. Professor Hablutzel has been its Director. For both organizations, Prof. Hablutzel has monitored developments in Illinois Not For Profit Law and helped draft numerous amendments to the Illinois Act. For the past six years, he has performed the same function for the Illinois State Bar Association.
Kathy Schaeffer, AB'82 (Speaker)
Kathy Schaeffer brings more than 30 years of communications experience to clients in an array of areas, including health care, corporate social responsibility, economic development, tax policy, energy and philanthropy. Kathy's firm, Kathy Schaeffer and Associates, Inc., provides strategic communications counsel to associations, corporations and nonprofits who must translate their public policy positions to generate public support, make landmark legislative progress, mend reputations and navigate crises. In 2010, the firm won the prestigious Platinum Award from the Publicity Club of Chicago. Kathy was a news reporter for 10 years at the Daily Herald, before switching to public relations in 1988. She founded her firm in 1994. Kathy serves on a governing board of the First United Methodist Church of Chicago and is a member of the advisory board of the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management at North Park University. She serves on the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee, and is a past chair of the Neighborhood Writing Alliance and the Chicago Area Public Affairs Group. Kathy is married to a Booth alum.
Kristen Romans (Speaker)
Kristen Romans is a Program Manager with the Arts & Business Council of Chicago where she currently manages the On BOARD Training & Matching Program, which trains business professionals on the best practices of nonprofit board service and management, and matches them with an arts & culture organization in Chicago. She has also managed the Business Volunteers for the Arts (pro bono consulting) program, and co-creates content for the workshop series throughout the year. Kristen also has several years of experience in event planning, logistics, and hospitality. She is currently completing a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Northwestern University, has a BBA in Finance from Eastern Michigan University and enjoys cooking, yoga, gardening, golf, and softball as well as attending arts & culture programming throughout the city.
