Revisiting Re-engineering the Corporation thoughts by the late Michael Hammer
In the early 1990s' Michael Hammer published what soon became a bestseller. Re-engineering the corporation preceded other prescriptive business processes for strategic advantage and efficiency, e.g. TQM etc.
Today's competitive challenges have only upped the ante for sources of advantage. So we are revisiting Michael Hammer. Not only did he provide a provide a role model for resilience in the face of failure, but he shared severl lessons up until the time of his sudden death in 2008.
We will begin with a summary review by Art Kleiner entitled "Revisiting Reengineering," that appeared in Strategy and Business in July of 2000.
Next we selected two articles that Hammer wrote for HBR. The first "The Super Efficient Company" appeared in September 2001, describes the challenges of cross company business interactions, an issue that has been accelerated by globalism. Second a piece that appeared in April 2007, "The Process Audit," reflects his experience and growing wisdom from working with several companies to develop and implement a new framework for process-based transformation.
