The Economics and Public Policy Forum is a monthly discussion group of Booth alumni and students who gather over lunch to discuss a pre-selected topic and reading material. This is a collegial gathering of equals and we do not present speakers. The topic and pre-reading for October is Unions and Right to Work States.
Event Details
Boeing has encountered a number of strikes at its unionized factories near Seattle, Washington. Consequently, when Boeing expanded production in 2009 it announced that it would build a new factory to make 787 Dreamliner jumbos in South Carolina, one of 22 “right to work” states. Boeing actually increased its workforce in Washington, did not close any factories, and did not sack any workers. Yet the NLRB’s general counsel claimed expanding into another state was an illegal act of retaliation. The NLRB is also suing two states (Arizona and South Dakota) because voters approved guaranteed secret-ballots before a workplace can be unionized. Join us for a group discussion on unions and the right to work. This topic has many parallels to our prior forum on geographical economy.
