The Economics and Public Policy Forum is a monthly discussion group of Booth alumni and students who gather over lunch to discuss a pre-selected topic and reading material. This is a collegial gathering of equals and we do not present speakers. The topic and pre-reading for August is:
THE CANON OF ECONOMICS – Part 1 of a Series
Join us for a group discussion on the works of eminent economists that have stood the test of time. This series will be interspersed among our other monthly topics and act as a “refresher course” on economic theory and practice. We will tackle on author (or co-authors) at a time. Topics over the series will include the works of such famous economists as:
Simon Kuznets (1955) – The rise and fall of inequality in the course of economic development
Robert Mundell (1961) – Theory of optimum currency areas
Anne Krueger (1974) – Rent seeking and government distortion of the economy
Armen Alchian and Harold Demsetz (1972) – How the firm evolved as an organizational form to prevent shirking
Angus Deaton and John Muellbauer (1980) – Consumer-demand equations
Avinash Dixit and Joseph Stiglitz (1977) – Differentiated products and increasing returns to scale
Robert Shiller (1981) – Excess volatility of stock prices
