Despite the impacts of COVID, record amounts of money are flowing into Private Markets driving valuations as competition for assets is high. The Chicago Booth Alumni Club of New York is proud to present a 2022 forecast on Private Markets. The panel will focus on Real Estate, ESG, Venture Capital, Private Equity, and then present the perspectives on private markets from two CIO's.

John Nikolich (Panelist)

Prior to joining LSC Development, Mr. Nickolich was EVP at Banner Apartments, where he established their multifamily development initiative and created and operated Banner Storage Group. He also founded Flint Creek Partners, a boutique real estate investment bank. Mr. Nickolich has over 25 years of experience in the real estate industry and has raised more than $6 billion for real estate companies. He began his real estate career at LaSalle Investment Management and then joined the Real Estate Investment Banking group at First Union Securities. John began his career at Accenture and received an MBA from the The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a BA from Northwestern University.
John F. Larkin (Panelist)
Head of Impact Investments / Senior PM, Avenue Capital

Mr. Larkin is responsible for the overall direction of the Avenue Impact Strategy. He sits on the Fund's investment committee responsible for the strategic direction, sourcing, and advising on investment opportunities within the strategy. In addition, he holds a seat on the Firm's Management Committee. Previously, Mr. Larkin was Head of Alternative Investments - Americas at Deutsche Bank where he managed the private asset platform. While at Deutsche Bank, he served as a board member to various investment funds and as a speaker on the topic of climate change. Mr. Larkin currently serves on the board of Cogent Energy Systems and previously as a board member of North American Biofuels Co and Amelio Solar. Mr. Larkin is a retired Navy Commander/Pilot and holds a BS from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Andrew Ackerman (Panelist)
Venture Partner, Urbantech at Dreamit Ventures
Mr. Ackerman is a recovering consultant turned serial entrepreneur, startup mentor and angel investor. He is currently a Venture Partner at Dreamit and a Strategic Advisor for Second Century Ventures, investing in Proptech and Construction Tech. Mr. Akerman has written for Fortune, Forbes, Propmodo, CREtech, Builders Online, Architect Magazine, Multifamily Executive, AlleyWatch, Edsurge, The 74 Million, et. al. He founded two companies and has a keen appreciation for how hard it is to build a successful startup, even under the best of circumstances. He speaks Hebrew fluently as well as some Spanish, French, Japanese and JavaScript. Mr. Ackerman has an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a BA from The Johns Hopkins University.
Alex Matina (Panelist)
VP Investments, MFP Investors, LLC
Since 2007, Mr. Matina is Vice President, Investments for MFP Investors, LLC, the family office of Michael F. Price, which has a value-investing focus across public and private markets. From October 2005 to August 2007, He served in various roles at Balance Asset Management, a multi-strategy hedge fund, and from June 2004 to September 2005, as a senior associate at Altus Capital Partners, a middle market private equity fund. Prior thereto, he was a principal at 747 Capital, a private equity fund-of-funds, and a financial analyst at Salomon Smith Barney in the financial sponsors group of the investment banking division. Mr. Matina is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trinity Place Holdings, Inc., a publicly traded real estate company and a director of S&W Seed Company, a publicly traded agricultural company. He also serves on the board of TGI Fridays, a private casual dining company, Crowheart Energy LLC, a private energy company with assets in Wyoming and Madava Financial, a private energy lender. From December 2017 to May 2019, he served on the board of directors of Papa Murphy's, a national restaurant chain which was listed on Nasdaq until the company was acquired and taken private in May 2019. Alex has also served as an adjunct professor of finance at Fordham University. Alex currently is a board member of the St. Francis Hospital Foundation in Manhasset, NY and is also an Advisory Board member, Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis at Fordham University, where he also serves on the President's Council.
Stephen Ewen (Panelist)
Partner, Mercer Investments
Mr. Ewen is a Partner and Deputy CIO-Hedge Funds with Mercer. In this capacity, he is co-portfolio manager for Mercer's North American based discretionary hedge fund offerings with excess of $4 billion in assets as well as a voting member of the firm's Macro Ratings Review Committee. Mr. Ewen is highly engaged in Mercer's broader hedge fund research efforts as a mentor to the hedge fund research team, providing advice and guidance in addition to working alongside researchers to conduct primary manager research. Mr. Ewen also acts as a leading source of new manager ideas and intellectual capital. He joined Hammond Associates in October 2005, which was subsequently acquired by Mercer in January 2011. Mr. Ewen has spent his entire career in alternative investments dating back to 1998 when he worked at HFR Consulting/HFR Asset Management. He joined Swiss American Corp, a Member of the Credit Suisse Group, in 2002, and while there, focused on hedge fund manager selection for the Private Bank's $10 billion in hedge fund assets. In 2004, Stephen joined NIP as a hedge fund analyst overseeing and advising on nearly U.S. $1 billion in hedge fund of fund assets. Mr. Ewen received a BS degree from Miami University with a double major in Finance and Decision Sciences. He is a CFA Charter holder and a member of the CFA Institute as well as the CFA Society of Cleveland.
Harshal Chaudhari (Panelist)
Chief Investment Officer, GE
Mr. Chaudhari is the Chief Investment Officer at GE and is responsible for managing ~$110B in pension assets. He was previously with IBM for 19 years and held several senior finance roles including Chief Investment Officer, Divisional CFO, as well as several key positions in IBM's Treasury department leading capital allocation, funding and investments. He also serves on the investment advisory committees of Hartford HealthCare foundation and Okabena Investment Advisors, a multi-family office. Mr. Chaudhari earned an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Mumbai.
David Hogan (Moderator) '02
Sourcing, Capital Markets, Hickory CRE Lending
Mr. Hogan joined Hickory CRE in 2019 and is focused on sourcing and managing capital market relationships with senior finance partners and investors. Prior to Hickory, he was with Alex Brown/Deutsche Bank for 14 years focused on middle market institutional equity research sales and private placements for family offices and institutions. Before joining DB, Mr Hogan worked with Bridge Information Systems/Reuters as Director of Client Services and Business Development for Asia/Pacific. He has a BA from Trinity University and an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
